On Saturday, October 5^th more walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer when the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Dent County gets underway. Then teams will gather at Salem City Park from 12:00 pm to 12:00 am, participants will be helping the Society mark a major milestone in the fight against cancer. The American Cancer Society will celebrate 100 years of saving lives from cancer and creating a world with more birthdays. During Relay For Life events, participants camp out overnight at a local school, park, or fairground, and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relay events take place overnight, lasting up to 24 hours in length. Twelve teams have signed up for the event and are working to raise $44,000 for the American Cancer Society. Teams will walk the track throughout the event and celebrate cancer survivors during the survivor lap and during the Survivor Dinner taking place that evening at Salem City Park.  One of the most touching moments during a Relay For Life event is the Luminaria Ceremony which takes place after sundown, honoring the community’s cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bears the name of someone who has battled cancer. Luminaria may be purchased for $5 by visiting www.relayforlife.com/dentmo. Also a part of the Relay For Life of Dent County event is the Fight Back Ceremony, in which a community leader will inspire Relay participants with his or her own commitment and will challenge them to take a personal pledge of action (e.g., stop smoking, eat more healthily, exercise regularly, etc.) in fighting back. Funds raised at Relay For Life of Dent County help the American Cancer Society get even closer to bringing an end to cancer as we know it. Because of the shutdown of the federal government, the National Park Service has closed all 401 national parks including Ozark National Scenic Riverways. All park facilities including amenities on the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers are closed except for the Ozark Trail, a through trail, and state and county roads. The public will not be allowed to access any area of the park. Fifteen employees remain on duty to provide security, protection, emergency response, firefighting, and to maintain water and waste water facilities. The park will furlough about 57 employees and approximately 44 concession employees will be affected by the shut-down. Any visitors found in a closed area will be asked to leave. In addition,all upcoming park programs and school visits will be cancelled, and special events relocated, including the Haunting in the Hills scheduled at Alley Spring October 12^th and 13^th, if the budget impasse continues. Any scheduled Special Park Uses such as weddings may not take place in the park. The Ozark National Scenic Riverways hosts close to 80,000 visitors during the month of October. The NPS website at www.nps.gov and campground reservations at www.recreation.gov will go dark for the duration of the shutdown. NPS.gov has more than 600,000 pages and 250,000 unique visitors. The Salem Police Department has released more reports. On Tuesday, September 10^th at 4:00 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a residence in the 1400 block of West Highway 32. The investigation revealed that someone took a Kel-Tec 9mm handgun from a residence. That same afternoon at 4:03, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1400 block of West Franklin in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took a Reese Hitch, valued $25, from a green 2001 Dodge truck. Early that evening at 7:28, an officer responded to Walmart in reference a violation of a protection order. The investigation led to the arrest of a 34-year old Salem male for breaking a proximity directive listed on the protection order. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that same night at 10:00, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation revealed that a 29-year old male of New Orleans, Louisiana took merchandise valued at $588 and left the store without paying for the items. On Wednesday, September 11^th at 11:28 at night, a 75-year old Salem male was transported to the New Hope Medical Center in Sullivan in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Thursday, September 12^th at 10:57 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Dollar General Store in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 30-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $5.50. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. That night at 8:45, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a residence in the 100 block of South Warfel. That investigation revealed that someone took patio furniture valued at $60. On Friday, September 13^th at 8:26 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Upper Elementary School in reference to an assault. The investigation led to the detention of an eleven year-old male juvenile for assaulting a teacher. The juvenile was released to a guardian and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office for further review.
