Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, wants to remind drivers to watch for deer, which are more active this time of year. Drivers should be especially vigilant during evening and early dawn hours. Hunting and crop harvesting may result in these animals being in places they aren’t usually seen. Last year, drivers in Missouri experienced 3,563 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. One deer strike occurred every 2.5 hours in the state. In these crashes, four people were killed and 367 injured. When you see deer, slow down and proceed with caution. Deer often travel in groups, so stay on guard after a close call or when you see one deer. In areas where there are streams or wooded corridors surrounded by farmland, look for more deer to cross roadways. The majority of deer strike crashes occur from October through December each year, with the largest number taking place in November. Most deer strikes occur between the hours of 5 p.m. and 6:59 a.m. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds drivers that an attempt to avoid striking a deer could result in a more serious crash involving oncoming traffic. Panicking and overreacting usually lead to more serious traffic crashes. Please stay alert, and make sure you and the occupants of your vehicle buckle up!
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will continued to perform general highway maintenance and construction work in our area this coming week. In Dent County, culvert pipe replacement will take place on Route C between Route O and Dent County Road 2090 on Wednesday and Thursday. Roadway maintenance will take place on Route Z between Route K and the end of state maintenance now through Monday, October 8th. Roadway maintenance will take place Route BB between Route K and the end of state maintenance through Thursday. The Salem Police Department released a report for September 16th. That evening at 10:30, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a missing juvenile. The investigation of the report revealed that a 14 year-old female juvenile left home and did not return. After further investigation, the juvenile was located at a residence in the 1000 block of East Center. The juvenile was released to a grandparent and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office.
Recent rains have improved several pastures around the state, but finding enough quality forage and hay will still be a challenge for many producers. Research and extension faculty from the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at the University of Missouri will offer10 interactive presentations at Wurdack Research Center’s annual field day on Friday, October 5th to help producers improve their pastures, stretch hay supplies, and take advantage of technological advancements to boost profits. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and tours start at 9 a.m. A free lunch will be provided after morning tours. During lunch, Mike Kasten, director of the University of Missouri’s Quality Beef by the Numbers program, will explain how beef cow-calf operators can improve profitability by adopting applied reproductive and genetic technologies to meet increasing domestic and global demand for high-quality beef. After lunch, attendees can take a silvopasture tour demonstrating integrated timber, forage and cattle production. The following presentations will be offered on the morning tours: supplementation strategies for poor-quality forage, herd culling strategies, stretching short hay supplies, renovating forages, tree leaves as forage, dung beetles improving the pasture, chainsaw safety, and a demonstration of a Baker Sawmill. Nestled along the Meramec River in the northeast Ozarks in Crawford County, the Wurdack Research Center conducts demonstrations and research in integrated livestock, forages, forestry, agroforestry and wildlife management practices for the Ozark region of Missouri. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released a couple arrest reports for Dent County. On Saturday, September 29th at 11:12 at night, 67-year old Lenley Schofield of Salem was arrested and charged with a felony DWI and failure to signal. He was later released. On Sunday, September 30th at 12:35 in the early morning, 21-year old Joseph Sutton of Salem was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and no seat belt. He was later released.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will play St. James tonight at Sullivan in District play. Salem is seeded third and the game is scheduled for 6:30. Admission is $4.00 for those six years of age and over at the Sullivan Fields. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.
Scott Rolen homered while Jay Bruce and Dioner Navarro each knocked in a run to lead the Cincinnati Reds past the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-1, in the middle test of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Chris Carpenter surrendered three runs on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts through six innings for St. Louis, who were still able to clinch the final Wild Card spot in the NL due to the Dodgers losing. Matt Holiday’s sac fly accounted for the lone Cardinal run. The Cardinals will wrap up the regular season tonight at 6:40 and you can hear the game on KSMO following the Salem game.
Alcides Escobar went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI and the Kansas City Royals took a 4-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in the next to last game of the season on Tuesday. Jeff Francoeur added a solo homer for the Royals, who had lost eight of nine coming into the game. Jeremy Guthrie (5-3) gave up two runs on five hits in six innings to win his fifth straight decision. The Royals and Tigers play again tonight to finish up the season.

Celebration of Life for Perle Rogers of Cook Station, age 89, will be held Saturday, November 3rd at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 until time of service. Memorials may be given to St. Jude Hospital, Gideon’s International, or the Gorman Cemetery in Cook Station.
