The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of September. During the month, they wrote 16 traffic tickets, 13 warning tickets and two equipment repair orders. They served 26 summons to appear in court and five fugitive warrants. The Salem Police Department investigated 17 accidents, five assaults, three domestic assaults, and one report of driving while intoxicated. The Police Department also investigated 10 reports of stealing, six reports of property damage, one report of tampering, two reports of a missing or runaway juvenile, two reports of counterfeiting, one report of sexual misconduct, one report of endangering the welfare of a child, one report of unlawful use of a weapon, four burglaries, five reports of disorderly conduct, one ex-parte violation, and two reports of leaving the scene of an accident. They also investigated four reports of possession of marijuana. The police received 1,898 calls for service during the month and handled 151 walk-ins to the station. The Salem Police Department redirected 72 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 20 hours in court testifying, six hours as court bailiff and spent four hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in September included 45 calls for escorts, eight 9-1-1 calls, two calls for a suspicious person or vehicle, nine calls for peace disturbances, three intoxicated driver investigation calls, 20 ambulance assist calls, 10 calls for alarms sounding, 11 calls for fights in progress, one call for a prowler, one call for drag racing and/or speeding, seven domestic dispute calls, two calls for an intoxicated pedestrians, one bomb threat call, three fire calls and 11 wreckers were needed. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 9,512 miles during the month of September. The Salem Police Department arrested 22 males and 7 females, for a total of 22 arrests during the month of September.
An accident occurred Thursday afternoon, September 27th at 3:45 at Macarthur and Highway 32 in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a gray 1993 Plymouth Acclaim driven by Charles Edwards was traveling southbound on Macarthur near highway 32. The Plymouth veered across Macarthur and struck a curb and then struck a utility pole. A passenger, 17-year old Shawna Steelman suffered injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Plymouth sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene.
The October meeting of the Salem Chamber of Commerce will be sponsored by Embarq, and will be a breakfast with local politicians, including Senator Frank Barnitz, and Representative Jason Smith, on Tuesday, October 16th at 7:00 am and will be held at My Place Restaurant. The Missouri State Highway Patrol joins the National Crime Prevention Council in observing October 2007 as National Crime Prevention Month. To prevent home theft, make sure you have good locks on all exterior doors--at least dead-bolt locks with a minimum of one-inch throw. Make sure your windows have strong locks, and use the locks you have. Secure sliding glass doors with commercially available bars or locks, or put a wooden dowel or broom handle in the door track. Porches, entrances, and outside areas should be well lighted. Trim any bushes or trees that hide doors or windows. Maintain your yard and keep ladders and tools inside when they are not in use. Don’t hide a house key under the doormat or in a flowerpot. That’s the first place a burglar will look! Give a key to a trusted neighbor instead. Consider an alarm system. Senator Frank Barnitz announced that District Legislative Assistant Wilma Rowden would continue her listening posts in October at locations throughout the 16th Senate District. Rowden will be at the St. James City Hall on Tuesday, October 9th, from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Rowden will then be at the Dent County Commissioners meeting on Monday, October 22nd from 9:00 to 11:00 am and she will be at the Phelps County Commissioners meeting on Thursday, October 25th from 9:00 to 11:00 am. The Salem JV Football Tigers defeated the Houston JV Monday evening by the final score fo 22-6. Andrew Kissir scored on runs of three and 20 yards, and Ashton Karr scored on a two yard run. Salem also converted one two-point conversion and recorded a safety. Salem is now 2-1 on the year and they will travel to Mountain Grove next Monday.
The baseball playoffs get underway today with three of the four Division Series. In the National League, Colorado travels to NL East champions Philadelphia to begin its best-of-five series this afternoon. The Phillies, in the playoffs for the first time since 1993, will send ace Cole Hamels to the hill for Game 1 to face the Rockies top pitcher Jeff Francis, whose team is in the postseason for the first time since 1995. In Arizona, the NL West champion Diamondbacks their series against the NL Central champion Cubs with a marquee matchup of All-Star pitchers. Arizona sends reigning Cy Young winner Brandon Webb to the hill against Chicago ace Carlos Zambrano. The lone game in the American League pits AL East champion Boston against AL West titlist LA Angels of Anaheim at Fenway Park. The Red Sox send CY Young hopeful Josh Beckett, the lone 20-game winner in the majors this season, against Angels ace John Lackey.
St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay McKee will miss the next four-to-six weeks after fracturing the metatarsal in his right foot. The veteran blueliner played in just 23 games last season for the Blues after battling several injuries. The Blues yesterday assigned forwards Petr Cajanek and Mike Glumac to Peoria in the AHL. This puts the team at the opening night roster of 22 players when they face Phoenix tomorrow night at 9:00 on KSMO Radio.

A memorial service for Wayne Barrett, age 88, of St. James, formerly of Salem, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice or the Missouri Veterans Home Assistance League.
Funeral services for Mary S. Holden of Rolla, age 84, will be held Friday morning at the Chapel of Memories at the Davenport Memorial Park in Davenport, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Feed the Children. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
