The 50^th Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby will be held October 4^th, 5^th and 6^th at Montauk State Park. On Friday, October 4^th there will be a Cruise In Car Show from 4:00 to 9:00 pm, Trout Bingo begins at 6:00 and derby registration will be from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Then on Saturday, October 5^th, registration for the derby will be from 6:30 am to 9:00 pm and the derby fishing hours are 7:30 am to 6:30 pm. Also during the day on Saturday, there will be a free health screening from 9:00 am until 12:00 (noon), the Country Store and Bake Sale will be from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, kids activities for ages 10 and under will be from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. There will be the “Hike’s For Your Heart” guided hikes from 10:00 to 11:30 am and 1:30 to 3:00 pm and then a night hike to “Know The Dark” beginning at 7:30 pm. There will be entertainment during the day from 12:00 (noon) until 4:30 and the Auction will start at 5:00 pm in the front lodge. An outdoor movie will be shown at 7:00 and there is no charge. On Sunday, October 6^th derby registration will be from 6:30 until 11:30 am and fishing hours will be from 7:30 to 11:30 am. Prizes will then be awarded at 12:00 (noon) for the men and women’s heaviest stringer, the kids heaviest stringer, the heaviest brown trout and tagged fish caught and registered. All proceeds from the 50^th Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby will go to benefit the American Heart Association.

On Friday, October 4^th, the public is invited to Wurdack Research Center’s Field Day. The annual free event is a chance to find out what is going on at the local research center owned by the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and for landowners and farmers to learn better management practices from educational tours. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with tours beginning at 9:30 a.m. Topics covered will include minimizing hay waste in feeders, alternative forage crops, establishment of new fescue, managing winter hair coats on fall-born calves and how to best allocate stockpiled fescue. A demonstration of ThermalAid MU’s new smart phone app designed to help monitor heat stress on livestock, also will be presented. A complimentary lunch will be served to end the day. Each year, the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources sponsors the Wurdack Research Center Field Day as an opportunity for the public to find out what research goes on in their community. Nestled along the Meramec River southeast of Rolla in the Ozarks, the Wurdack Research Center conducts demonstrations and research in integrated livestock, forages, forestry, agro forestry and wildlife management practices that are economically viable, environmentally sound and sociologically acceptable for the Ozark region of Missouri. Timber covers most of the acreage, while 260 acres provide the base for forage production, rotational grazing and cattle production. Current research includes programs to improve forage, beef, agro forestry and timber. The Salem Advocates for Empowerment (S.A.F.E.) a coordinated community response team will conduct their quarterly team meeting on Friday, October 4^th at the SBU campus in Salem beginning at 12:00 (noon) and lunch will be served. There will be introductions and resource as well as program updates, a discussion about Obamacare and a presentation by Aflac. For more information contact Lisa Blackwell at 729-4774.

The Salem Police Department released more of their reports. On Saturday, September 7^th at 3:35 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Salem City Park in reference to a disturbance. The investigation revealed that a 27-year old Licking male had assaulted a 47-year old Salem male. He was arrested and released on a summons to appear in court. On Sunday, September 8^th at 7:15 in the evening, an officer made contact with a 56-year old Salem male who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody and released to the Dent County Sheriffs Office. On Monday, September 9^th at 2:30 in the early morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of East Third in reference to a peace disturbance. That investigation led to the arrest of a 32-year old Salem male for disturbing the peace with loud music and yelling. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that day at 2:04, an officer responded to a residence in the 300 block of East Fourth in reference to a theft from a building. The investigation revealed that a former renter took a wall heater, valued at $371, from a residence upon moving out. Later that same afternoon at 3:14, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1000 block of South Warfel in reference to a disturbance. That investigation led to the arrest of a 33-year old Salem female on an active arrest warrant from Washington County. She was incarcerated pending a court appearance.
