The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5140, 5220, 5600, 6010, 6570 and 6585; and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 4243 and 4245. Purcell reported that repairs would be made to the chip and seal roads 4180, 4200 and 4253. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2550, 3235, 3253, 3270, 3273, 4290 and 4300; and materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 2540. He said that crews would try to get brush cut on Dent County Roads 3223 and 3253. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he would be attending an Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management Executive Board meeting today to review recycling and other waste reduction applications for distribution of funds raised from the tipping fees at landfills and transfer stations. He would also be attending a County Commissioners Association of Missouri meeting on Wednesday to review legislative priorities and discuss the training for the commissioners to be held in February of 2013. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reminds everyone that the deadline to register to vote in the General Election is October 10th. She also said that if you have moved or had a name change to please contact her office at 729-4144. She stated that absentee voting continues at the courthouse but you must have a reason to vote absentee in the state of Missouri. Absentee voting is available Monday through Friday during regular business hours and will also be held on Saturday, November 3rd from 8:00 AM until noon. Curley also wants to remind people that they should review a copy of the sample ballot because of the number of issues on the ballot. She stated copies of the sample ballot would be available in her office two weeks prior to the election and also in the Salem News. The commissioners then decided to go with the Fabick bid for two Caterpillar graders for $94,978 each after trade. Fabick is giving Dent County $102,000 trade for each of their current John Deere graders. They also guaranteed $165,000 buy back in five years on the new graders. Fabick will deliver the graders in December and the commissioners will be seeking bids for the lease/purchase agreement. At the last meeting, Deputy Wayne Becker discussed the upcoming 2013 Sheriff’s Budget, compensation, and rates as well as possibly putting in a separate line item for the compensation time to be paid out of. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The “Ultimate Girls Night Out” that was held last Thursday night at the Salem Freedom Activity Center was a big success and helped raise funds for the Council for Healthy Dent County. The event also help make ladies aware of shops, merchants and vendors in the Salem area that can cater to their needs. Canned food was collected during the event that was donated to Sacred Heart Catholic Church food pantry and a total of over 1,000 cans of food were donated by those attending the event. For those who donated items, they were entered into a drawing for the Ladies Night Out “Treasure Chest.” The value of the chest was estimated at over $250 and included items such as eight Cardinal Box Seat tickets to the October 2nd game vs. Cincinnati Reds, perfume, books, purse, gift cards, chocolate, wine, and more. Megan Simpson won the Treasure Chest at the event.
The Salem Police Department released more of their reports. On Monday, September 10th at 10:00 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a stolen dog. The investigation of the report revealed that person or persons unknown took an English bulldog valued at $1200.00 from the yard of a residence in the 700 block of North Henderson. During the investigation, the dog was located. On Saturday, September 15th at 12:25 in the morning, an officer attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a residence in the 400 block of East Holmes. During the investigation, a 20-year old female of Salem was taken into custody for distribution of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspect was incarcerated pending the application of warrants. At 10:56 that evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 22-year old male of Salem for driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana. The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with information regarding any open case is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
The Salem Area Community Betterment Association will have their regular Board Meeting tonight at 5:00 at the Visitor’s Center.

Cortney Putman threw her second no-hitter of the year to down Mountain View, 10-0, on Monday and the Salem Lady Softball Tigers secured their first SCA conference title. Putman struck out 12, including 11 in a row to start the game, and faced just 16 batters in 5 innings. Sam Parker and Ashlyn Cook finished the game with 3 RBI apiece. Salem is now 14-5-1 and finished 5-1 in the SCA. The win insures thebest winning percentage and fewest losses in program history. The Lady Tigers are seeded third in District play which starts Wednesday at 6:30 at Sullivan. The Lady Tigers will face St. James. Admission is $4.00 or those six years of age and over at the Sullivan Fields.
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be in Rolla to face the Lady Bulldogs tonight at 6:00. Salem is still looking for their first win of the year.
Jaime Garcia homered and pitched into the seventh inning as the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Cincinnati Reds, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Garcia (7-7) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six over 6 2/3 innings for the Cardinals, who are now one win or one Dodgers loss away from locking up the NL's final wild card spot. The Cardinals and Reds play again tonight at 6:40 on KSMO.
The Detroit Tigers clinched the AL Central title with a 6-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday. Alex Gordon homered for the Royals, who have lost eight of their last nine games. The Royals and Tigers play again tonight.

Graveside services for Jim Allison of Salem, age 67, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
Funeral services for Carl Richard Burk of Boss, age 76, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
Celebration of Life for Perle Rogers of Cook Station, age 89, will be held Saturday, November 3rd at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 until time of service. Memorials may be given to St. Jude Hospital, Gideon’s International, or the Gorman Cemetery in Cook Station.
