The Flu Clinic to be held at the Salem Senior Center today has been cancelled due to shortage of the vaccine.  At this time the clinic has not been rescheduled.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that ditch work would be done on Dent County Roads 5150, 5450 and 6590; and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 5150 and 5450 as well.  Purcell also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5100 and 5105. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3180 and 4270. Larson also reported that District 2 has 10 FEMA Project Worksheets totaling $336,358 that need to be turned into FEMA for 75% reimbursement. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind anyone that recently received notice of a late address change, that they will receive mail that is addressed to their old address until October 1st of 2010. Beverly Atchison stopped by the meeting to discuss with the Commission about how to get a speed limit set on Dent County Road 3270. The Commission explained that she would need to get a petition stating what she would like the speed limit to be set at, then have the residents of that road sign the petition agreeing to that speed limit. She would then need to bring the petition to the Commission. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public. 

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting this morning at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 10:00 am. During the hearing of persons, Michelle Blackwell from the Salem United Methodist Church is requesting that Doss Road from Highway 32 to Roosevelt Street be blocked off on Saturday, October 31st for the Halloween Trunk of Treat from 4:00 to 9:00 pm and Beverly Flanery from the Grace Community Church is requesting the blocking of 600 South Water Street to Franklin Street on Saturday, October 31st for a church and community event from 4:00 to 9:00 pm, and Grace is also requesting the same closing on Saturday, November 28th from noon until 6:00 pm for another church event. Alderman Jim McDaniels, Jim Jackson, Kenneth Nash and Brad Nash will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem along with comments on issues from Mayor Gary Brown. During the Introduction and Reading of Bills, Bill #3181 is an ordinance needed to show that the City of Salem is following the new laws concerning immigration, Bill #3182 is an ordinance needed to show that the City of Salem agrees to the settlement with AT & T/SBC Landline. In new and miscellaneous business, there are three budget adjustment that need to made including; $16,500 from Capital Improvement Street Backhoe to Capital Improvement Water Backhoe because the final lease payment for the Water Department’s backhoe was left off the budget and this adjustment will cover the final payment. Also $10,000 from Capital Improvement Mapping Water System and $10,000 from Capital Improvement Sewer Engineering Fees to Development Study for Bio-Mass Generation. The Board will also address putting out for bids the damaged cedar trees at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. After approval of the bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board will then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public. 

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Thursday, September 24th at 9:40 pm, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to County Road 2155 to assist the Salem Memorial District Hospital with one male patient. A total of nine firefighters responded to the call. On Sunday, September 27th at 11:45 pm, the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to County Road 2300 due to a structure fire. Upon arrival, 11 firefighters found the structure was fully involved and already on the ground. The cause of the fire is unknown. On Monday, September 28th at 4:06 in the afternoon, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to the 100 block of South Jackson due to a fire. Upon arrival, 10 firefighters found a grease fire that was already put out. The scene was under control at 4:21 that afternoon.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers dominated the Thayer Lady Bobcats last night in JV and varsity action. The varsity girls beat Thayer in two straight games, 25-13 and 25-9, to improve to 4-0 in the SCA Conference. The JV also won in two straight games. The Lady Tigers will host Rolla Tuesday night in their Netcoming contest.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers game with Union yesterday was postponed due to wet grounds.

The Salem Football Tigers will travel to Mountain View tonight to face the Liberty Eagles in a key SCA match up. Mountain View is 3-0 in the SCA while Salem is 2-2. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com starting at 6:30 with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt.

The 2009 St. Louis Blues pocket schedules have arrived!! They are available at the KSMO Radio studios today and will be available Monday at most sponsor locations and the Salem TCRC.

The St. Louis Blues start the 2009-2010 season today against Detroit in Sweden starting at 2:00. They will play the Red Wings again tomorrow at 2:00 and KSMO will join the game in progress after Cards baseball.

Pitcher Chris Carpenter enjoyed a career day at the plate, hitting a grand slam and driving in six, as the St. Louis Cardinals routed the Cincinnati Reds, 13-0, in finale of a three-game series. Carpenter also hit a two-run double and equaled his career RBI total with this game alone. He had never before hit a home run in 12 major league seasons. Carpenter (17-4) also took the win after allowing three hits, walking one and striking out six in five innings. Troy Glaus went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in for the NL Central-champion Cardinals. The Cardinals finished 2009 with a 45-36 road record. St. Louis hosts Milwaukee in a three-game series to close the regular season. KSMO will join tonight’s game in progress after Salem Tiger Football.

The Kansas City Royals will host the Minnesota Twins in a key series for the Twins who still have a chance to win the Central Division.

Funeral services Leona Faye McDaniels of Salem, age 64, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time for service. Interment will be in the Round Pond Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Round Pound Cemetery, Local Chapter Relay For Life or Leona McDaniels Scholarship Fund.

Funeral services for Elsie L. Camden of Salem, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
