The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft and burglaries. On September 22nd at 7:31 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 100 block of Brady Lane in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed persons unknown took a yard ornament valued $250.00. At 12:01 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 700 block of Virginia in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that persons unknown took a yard ornament valued $105.00. At 12:46 that same afternoon, officers were sent to residences on Roosevelt and Virginia in reference stolen yard ornaments. The investigations of the reports revealed that ornaments valued $70.00 had been taken by person(s) unknown. On September 22nd at 3:24 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that an unknown person took baseball tickets valued $154.95 from a parked vehicle in the 400 block of West Fifth.  On September 24th at 10:00 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Fourth Street Mall reference to a burglary. The investigation of that report revealed that persons unknown entered the building and took $95.00 cash from the register. On September 25th at 3:28 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report indicated that persons unknown took a yard ornament from a residence in the 1000 block of East First valued $85.00. At 4:53 that afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed persons unknown entered a residence in the 300 block of East Center and took a water heater valued $400.00. Anyone with information pertaining to the theft or burglaries, which are still under investigation, is asked to please call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242

An accident happened at 12:20 Wednesday afternoon in Crawford County on Route AA about three miles south of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 1991 Chevrolet Astro Van driven by 44-year old Wayne Jackson of Steelville, was traveling southbound on Route AA. The Van crested a small hill and was slowing to make a right turn into a private driveway. Two-year old Gavin Griffith of Steelville was standing in the driving lane and was struck by the van. Griffith suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. The Van sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.

The Dent County Health Center will be holding a Flu Clinic tomorrow at the Salem Freedom Activity Center from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Everyone is eligible and the cost is $20. Research on forage, beef and agro-forestry is to be highlighted at Wurdack Farm field day on Friday, October 3rd. Tours will include a demonstration of harvesting timber with a mule team. John Dwyer, will discuss his research on shortleaf pine during the annual field day at MU’s Wurdack Farm in Cook Station. Other topics on the timber/agro-forestry tour will include an update on thinned timber stands and light penetration by MU forestry research specialist Dusty Walter and information about the emerald ash borer and jumping oak gall from Simeon Wright, coordinator of the MU Extension Plant Diagnostic Clinic, and MU Extension entomologist Wayne Bailey. Presentations scheduled for the beef/forage tour include: post-weaning management of calves on grass, by MU Extension beef nutritionist Justin Sexten, and hay quality and economics, by MU Extension regional specialists Ted Cunningham and Will McClain. The field day begins with lunch at 11:30 a.m. followed at 12:30 p.m. by a round of introductory speakers, including Wurdack Farm superintendent John Poehlmann, and the special guest speaker is Don Steen, director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers defeated Willow Springs Tuesday in SCA play in two straight games, 25-12 and 25-14. Salem is now 2-1 in the SCA. The JV also won, but it took three games. The JV lost the first game, 25-15, then won the next two games by the scores of 25-17 and 25-18. Salem will be at Thayer tonight starting at 6:00 in SCA play.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be back in action today as they will host Union starting at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Field.

The 12th Tiger Club has about 50-size large and extra large t-shirts available and they have been reduced to $5 each. The shirts can be purchased at the “Spirit Table” at the game on Friday night or from Melinda Freeman by calling 729-5340.

Lee Stempniak scored twice and added an assist as St. Louis pounded Toronto, 7-3, in preseason action. Andy McDonald had a goal and a pair of assists for the Blues, who tallied five times in the opening period. Brad Boyes, Yan Stastny, David Perron and T.J. Oshie also lit the lamp. The Blues regular season starts on October 10th against Nashville.

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms of a two-year contract with wide receiver Mark Bradley; added cornerback A.J. Davis, defensive end Jermaine McGhee and guard Anthony Oakley to the practice squad.

The “S-CLUB” sponsored Macho-Mania Boys Volleyball game will be held Thursday, October 9th in the High School gym. The first game will start at 7:00 PM as the sophomores, coached by Kristy Bermudez and Alayna Sellers, will take on the juniors, coached by Rachel Sirois and Jenna Cartwright. The winner will then play the seniors, coached by Hannah Kettner and Jessica Brand, for this year’s “braggin’ rights.” Come on out and support the Tigers. The admission for the event is $1.00 for everyone.

Funeral services for Margie McCay of Salem, age 82, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the Victor Baptist Church in Anutt. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Anutt Cemetery.

Funeral services for Milton Lavern Camden of Lenox, age 75, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Boss Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lois “Westerman” Hubbs of Salem, age 89, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Dry Fork Cemetery.

Funeral services for Geneva Marie Scott of Viburnum, age 90, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Shoal Creek Cemetery.
