The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, acting President of the Airport Board Phil Schmidt asked the aldermen to decide if they want an airport board that was set up by Ordinance #2546 back in 1983 that is supposed to act almost independent of alderman support when it came to income, expenses and maintenance of the airport, or be like the board has been in the last ten years where they really didn’t do anything to improve the airport, or does the board want something in between. Alderman McDaniels stated that he felt that if he is responsible for taxpayer’s money that would go for improvements at the airport that the aldermen should have some say in the operation of the airport. Schmidt said that current board wants to work on improving the airport using it to help promote the area and to take care of problems that may arise. City Attorney Mark Weaver felt uneasy about the autonomy that the ordinance gave the airport board and felt that the board should be an advisory board similar to that of the park board. The issue will be put on the agenda for the next meeting after the ordinance has been reviewed. Also at the meeting, K-9 officer Joe Chase and Patrolman Bobby Simpson were given citations for going above and beyond the normal course of duty in breaking cases on burglaries and the recovery of stolen guns. At the request of Alderman Bill Riley, the board will set up a workshop to discuss the paving of streets for next year and the repair of water and sewer lines that needs to be accomplished. Alderman McDaniels wanted to make sure that the new trucks purchased by the city are maintained and that a bed liner be put in the trucks to maintain their value. He also reported that kids are playing in the large culvert pipes in the city park that will be installed in the creek ditch. Mayor Brown stated that 70 people were on the shutoff list on Friday, but as of Monday morning after a note was left at many residents, only 19 shutoffs occurred. The Mayor said that DNR approved the conditions of the wastewater treatment plant with a few modifications for sampling. City Clerk Mary Happel reported that the city needed codification of their ordinances so that old ones can be removed, or updated as needed. These ordinances could then be put online. The board would like to see a demonstration and that will be scheduled. The board approved setting the Halloween hours from 6:00 to 8:00 on Halloween night, and they approved sending a registered letter to those residents who have not yet complied with the mandated sewer hook-ups to have them completed by a certain date or they could pay as much as a $500 fine per day. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.
The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that the southeast part of Dent County received some rain, so all of the District 1 graders would in the Sinkin Township area grading on Dent County Roads 561, 562 and 565. Simpson also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 408 and gravel would be hauled to the crusher. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Road 207 and also in the Boss area on Dent County Roads 433 and 532. Tune also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 257 and gravel would be hauled to the crusher. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the county is behind in sales tax revenue compared to this time last year. Skiles also reported that on October 19th at the Salem TCRC the Missouri Department of Agriculture will be conducting an Agro-Terrorism Event Planning meeting. The meeting is to update emergency responders on what to do in the case of a disease outbreak among livestock; the meeting would start at 9:00 am and last until 3:00 pm. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that at the County Clerks Conference last week, it was announced that Dent County, through the Help America Vote Act, would be receiving $220 per precinct for poll worker training. Curley also said that filings for the 2008 Primary Election would begin in February. Rene Purcell came by the meeting to discuss with Commissioner Simpson road and tree problems on various roads in the Oak Hill R-1 School district that bus drivers are having. Simpson said he would take a look at them at get back with her. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will travel to Lebanon tonight for non-conference action against the Lady Yellow Jackets. Salem enters the match with a 10-4-1 record.
The Salem 9th Grade Tigers lost to the Cuba Wildcats yesterday, 28-14. Cuba scored twice in the first and once in the second and and once in the fourth. Scoring for Salem was Ryan Smith from 4 yards out early in the second quarter. Jared Shorey added the two-point conversion on a reception from Smith. Then at the end of the game, Ryan Smith hit Franky Boyd on a 34-yard completion for a score.
St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson will miss his second straight game because of a partial tear of his groin. Rams head coach Scott Linehan made the announcement at his Monday press conference, adding that Jackson's injury is improving. Jackson suffered the injury in Week 3's 24-3 loss at Tampa Bay. He ended the game with 115 yards on 30 carries, but was hurt after making a cut late in the game. He has rushed for 233 yards on 69 carries in three games this season.
Matt Holliday was ruled safe on a questionable call at home plate on Jamey Carroll's sacrifice line drive to cap a three-run rally in the 13th inning, as the Rockies clinched the National League wild card spot with a 9-8 win over the San Diego Padres. Tied 6-6, Scott Hairston hit a two-run homer in the top of the 13th off Jorge Julio; but Trevor Hoffman, baseball's all-time saves leader, blew a chance to lock up a playoff spot for San Diego for the second time in three games as the Padres faltered in a tiebreaker game full of controversy.

Funeral services for Edward A. Decker, age 81, of Licking, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the United Methodist Church in Licking. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Licking United Methodist Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Rosalee Patterson of Bunker, age 74, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be from 600 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the West Fork Sutterfield Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the West Fork Sutterfield Cemetery.
A memorial service for Wayne Barrett, age 88, of St. James, formerly of Salem, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice or the Missouri Veterans Home Assistance League.
