The Salem Board of Aldermen held a special meeting Tuesday afternoon at the City Hall Council Chambers with Alderman Phillip Giacomelli not in attendance. At the meeting, the board approved a number of budget adjustments to finish up the 2013 fiscal year. Some of those adjustments included recognizing an additional $27,890 in sales tax revenue over the budgeted figure of $563,998, but deducting $564,862 from the electric fund sales due to less use of electricity over the year by residents bringing the electric fund sales to $5,677,638. With the less use of electricity, there was also a deduction from expenses of $200,000 to buy power from the supplier. There were also adjustments made to the McArthur Project budget concerning the STP funds provided by MoDOT as they were recognized as income to the city and were also to be expensed. Those items were removed from the budget as they do not go through the city. A number of other minor adjustments were also approved. The board approved the closing of Doss Road on Halloween night for a “Trunk or Treat” at the Salem United Methodist Church. The board also approved providing a Certification Endorsement for a Missouri Neighborhood Assistance Program Application to provide health services for the “working poor” called the Master’s Peace Clinic of Hope. Kim Kemnitzer and her husband, Bryan Kemnitzer, are submitting the application. The board approved Bill #3282 that authorizes Mayor J.J. Tune to enter into a contract between the City of Salem and the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission providing for an Airport Master Plan; and also approved Bill #3283 that authorizes Mayor Tune to execute a contract with the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission amending the State Block Grant Agreement for pavement maintenance and the FAA Flight Check. This ordinance will allow the city to be reimbursed from MoDOT $18,409 of the money they paid for the flight check under this program. The city’s portion of that required flight check has now been reduced to $969. This was part of the airport CIP project completed last year. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Dent County Sheriff’s has released their reports. On Friday, September 19th, a female came into the Dent County Sheriff's Office to report a fraudulent use of her credit card. She stated that she had not authorized the charges that were charged to her credit card. There was a total of $244.78 charged to her card and they appeared to have been from outside of the United States. No suspect information was given and the investigation continues. On Wednesday, September 24th at 8:08 in the evening, the Sheriff's Office received a telephone call from the Salem Memorial District Hospital and was advised that a patient had entered the hospital reporting that he had been assaulted. The investigation revealed that the victim, a 54-year old male, had been driving down Route H when he observed a vehicle behind him flashing its lights and honking its horn. He pulled over onto to Route DD and stopped thinking that the driver needed assistance. He stated that as he was attempting to exit his vehicle, he was struck in the face with an unknown object. The victim said that the male subject who struck him was approximately six feet tall, approximately two hundred pounds with sandy blonde or brown hair, which appeared to be a shaggy crew cut. The suspect had exited from a blue or purple Chevrolet Cavalier coupe. On Saturday, September 27th, the Dent County Sheriff's Office responded to Dent County Road 5080 for a reported domestic assault, where 24-year old Bryant Mendenhall had allegedly trapped his wife in the bathroom with him and threatened her with a razor blade. Mr. Mendenhall was arrested for assaulting his wife and was placed in the Dent County Jail, where is being held on a $10,000 cash only bond. This Monday at 8:34 in the morning, deputies responded to a residence on Dent County Road 3230 to investigate damage to a mailbox. The occupants of the residence stated that someone had damaged their mailbox pole sometime between Sunday evening and Monday morning. There were no known suspects in this matter. Anyone with information concerning the mentioned incidents is asked to contact the Dent County Sheriff's Office at 729-3241.
