An accident occurred at 5:00 Thursday morning in St. Louis County on westbound I-44 at the 259-mile marker that took the life of a Rolla man. According to the highway patrol report, a 2008 Sterling Conventional driven by 34-year old Joshua Sanders of Rolla struck the rear of a 2007 Saturn Ion owned by 44-year old Matthew Snyders of St. Louis, which was disabled and unoccupied in lane 2. The contact caused the Sterling to overturn. Sanders was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:23. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Both vehicles were totaled and removed from the scene by Hyndrich Brothers Towing.

An accident occurred at 9:49 Saturday morning in Reynolds County on Highway 72 just east of Route TT. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Chevrolet Uplander driven by 76-year old Shirley Hayes of Bunker crested a hill and struck a pedestrian, 42-year old John Walker of St. Clair. Hayes stated that she was blinded by the sun. Walker suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by ambulance. The Chevrolet sustained minor damage but was driven from the scene.

An accident occurred on Wednesday, September 19th at 8:54 in the evening on Highway 32 and Askins street. According to the Salem Police report, a collision occurred when a 1999 Chrysler 300M driven by Samuel Weston was traveling East on Highway 32 in the left hand inside lane when he collided with a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Peggy Clavier of Bunker was turning East from the Wal-Mart parking lot onto Highway 32 East. Suffering minor injuries was Clavier, who was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Chrysler sustained moderate damage, while the Lumina sustained minor damage.

The Salem Police Department released their reports for mid September. On Sunday, September 9th at 10:15 in the evening, officers of the Salem Police Department conducted a search warrant at a residence in the 600 block of East Hunt. The search warrant led to the arrest of a 33-year old male of Salem for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The next morning at 9:00, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to damage to a vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a male suspect damaged a windshield of a 1998 Ford Contour. The damage to the vehicle was an estimated $170. On Friday, September 14th at 2:45 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to damage to a vehicle. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown kicked the door of a 1998 Ford Explorer parked in the 300 block of East Third. The damage to the vehicle was valued at  $547.70. Later that evening at 6:44, a 15-year old male juvenile was taken into custody for stealing and possession of alcohol. The juvenile was later released to a parent and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Officer. On Saturday, September 15th at 1:05 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 51-year old male of West Palm Beach, Florida for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. Anyone with information regarding the property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 573-729-4242.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at the 2012 Awards Dinner. The banquet will be held on Thursday, November 1st at The Gathering Place of the Grace Community Church located at 600 South Water Street beginning at 6:00 pm. This year the Chamber Board decided to only hold a dinner to recognize and honor award nominees and recipients. Awards will be given in 6 categories: Business of the Year with 0-10 employees, Business of the Year with 11-25 employees, Business of the Year with 26-50 employees, Business of the Year with over 50 employees, Non-Profit Organization of the Year and the Customer Service Award (employee of a Chamber of Commerce member). Businesses, organizations and/or individuals have to be a current chamber member and/or an employee of a chamber business. Criteria and eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber Office located at 200 South Main Street or requested from chamber@salemmo.com. Lucas Combs scored two touchdowns and threw for another as the Willow Springs dominated the Salem Tigers Friday night, 32-0. Dwayne Stanley had a 75-yard kickoff return in the game as the Bears scored 16 points in 26 seconds in the 3rd quarter. Salem falls to 5-1 on the year and 2-1 in the SCA. The Salem Tigers will be at Mountain Grove on Friday night to face the Panthers at 7:00.

The Salem Lady Tiger softball game scheduled for Friday in Salem against Union was postponed to due the wet conditions. Salem is 13-5-1 on the year and they will play at Mountain View today at 4:30 and attempt to capture a least a portion of the SCA title.

Carlos Beltran hit a pair of two-run home runs and drove in five as the St. Louis Cardinals pounded the Washington Nationals, 10-4, in the finale of a three-game series. St. Louis stayed two games ahead of Los Angeles for the final wild card spot in the National League as the Dodgers downed the Rockies on Sunday. Jon Jay scored three times and drove in a run for the Cardinals, who have won six of eight. Lance Lynn (18-7) gave up four runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings to win his fifth straight start. The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds tonight at 6:40 on KSMO.

Asdrubal Cabrera capped a 10-run fifth inning with a grand slam as the Cleveland Indians thumped the Kansas City Royals, 15-3, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Progressive Field. Alex Gordon crushed a two-run homer and Tony Abreu added an RBI base hit for the Royals, who have lost seven of their last eight games. The Royals will start a series with the Tigers tonight.

The Missouri Tigers outlasted the University of Central Florida Saturday with a 21-16 non-conference victory. James Franklin completed 19-of-30 passes for 257 yards with an interception for Missouri (3-2) as it won on the road for the first time this season. Missouri got touchdowns from Dorial Green-Beckham, Marcus Murphy and Kendial Lawrence. Missouri will host Vanderbilt on Saturday.

Greg Zuerlein kicked four field goals, including a Rams franchise record 60-yarder, as St. Louis dropped the Seattle Seahawks, 19-13, on Sunday at Edward Jones Dome. Zuerlein is a perfect 12-12 in field goal attempts this year. The Rams will play Arizona on Thursday.

Jackie Battle had one receiving touchdown and ran for a score as the San Diego Chargers pounded the Kansas City Chiefs, 37-20, at Arrowhead Stadium. Matt Cassel completed 24-of-42 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns, but threw three first-half interceptions for Kansas City who fall to 1-3 this year. The Chiefs play the Ravens on Sunday.

Funeral services for Joshua Wayne Sanders of Rolla, age 34, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Greentree Christian Church of Rolla. Memorials are suggested to Jordan and Logan Sanders Scholarship Fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. 

Funeral services for Christopher Alan Pollard of Salem, age 33, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Christopher Pollard Memorial Fund at US Bank.

Graveside services for Jim Allison of Salem, age 67, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will be Tuesday night from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
