The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning for their regular scheduled meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on the Turtle loop on Dent County Road 5600 as well as on roads 6350 and 2410. He said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5630, and that repairs to various chip and seal roads is underway to get them ready for winter. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2600 and 2595, and that materials would be added and grading would be done to Dent County Roads 2590, 3150 and 3295. Larson said that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 3180, and that workers would be putting up road signs on Dent County Roads 2320 and 2590. Both commissioners stated that the road crews would now go back to working five eight-hour days starting on Monday, October 4
th. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind the public of the electronic, appliance and tire collection for recycling that will be held on October 16
th from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The collection will be held at the City of Salem Sewer and Water Department Construction Building at the corner of Third and Grand Streets. This program is being sponsored by the MRPC in conjunction with the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the City of Salem and Dent County. They will accept computers, hard drives, cell phones, VCR’s, microwaves, stoves, dryers, cassette players, stereos and other generic electronic equipment for no charge. People that have refrigerators, air conditioners and freezers that contain freon will be charged $50 for the removal of the refrigerant. There will be a charge for televisions at $10 each for a business and $5 each for an individual resident; and a $5.00 charge for each computer monitor to be recycled. There will also be charges for the tires to be collected for recycling. Passenger car tires will be $1.50 each, truck tires will be $5.00 each and tractor tires will be $10 each. Each individual is responsible for unloading the items from their vehicle so make sure that you have enough help. This collection is open to everyone in the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the last day to register to vote for the general election will be October 6
th. For more information about registering, call the clerk’s office at 729-4144. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.
The United States Attorney’s Office announced that three people from Rolla have entered guilty pleas to multiple methamphetamine related charges for activities that took place between March 2009 and June 2010 in Phelps County. Those pleading guilty include 46 year-old Lawrence Michael Breese, 32 year-old Ricky L. Canaday, and 21 year-old Ryan Lumsden. Breese pleaded guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute in excess of 500 grams of methamphetamine. Canaday pleaded guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute in excess of 50 grams of methamphetamine. Lumsden pleaded guilty to one felony count of distributing methamphetamine. Two other people from Rolla, 31 year-old Michael D. Coffman and 51 year-old Kenneth R. Chandler, are facing related charges and are awaiting trial. The South Central Drug Task Force investigated this case, and Assistant United States Attorney Jeannette Graviss is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
A Salem attorney, the Honorable John Max Price, was honored Thursday as a “Senior Counselor” of The Missouri Bar. The “Senior Counselor” title is bestowed upon lawyers who have reached the age of 75 years or who have been admitted to The Missouri Bar for 50 years. The recognition ceremonies came Thursday during the Opening Luncheon at The Missouri Bar Annual Meeting, taking place at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Center in Columbia. A total of 120 members of The Missouri Bar were presented with the “Senior Counselor” designation at the luncheon.
The City Wide Yard Sale will be held Saturday throughout Salem as maps are now available at convenience stores as well as in the September 28th edition of the Salem News. Maps are also available at sites around town, including The Salem News, city administrative building and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. The city offers yard sale spots on the parking lot behind the city administration building at Fourth and Iron Streets. The deadline to reserve space is Friday and the cost is $8.00 per reserved spot. The Union Lady Wildcats, aided by three straight Salem Lady Tiger errors, scored eight runs in the 5th inning and defeated Salem, 14-9 in non-conference play. Samantha Parker had three hits and two RBI for Salem and Cortney Putman added three hits and an RBI to the cause, but it wasn’t enough. Salem is now 11-9 on the year and will travel to Mountain View to face the Liberty Lady Eagles Monday at 4:30 in their final regular season game.
The Salem Lady Varsity Volleyball Tigers defeated Willow Springs in two straight game last night, 25-16 and 28-26 to improve to 2-2 in the SCA. The JV Lady Tigers lost in two straight games to Willow: 11-25 and 21-25. The Lady Tigers will travel to Rolla Tuesday night.
The Salem Football Tigers will host Ava tonight in their homecoming game starting at 7:00. Salem enters the game with a 3-2 record overall and in the SCA. You can hear the game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com starting with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt at 6:30.
Chris Carpenter closed out his season with his first complete game of the campaign as the St. Louis Cardinals took a 6-1 win over the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a four-game series from Busch Stadium. Carpenter (16-9) gave up just one run on a wild pitch along with four hits and two walks while striking out four for the Cardinals, who have won four of their last five. Matt Pagnozzi drove in two runs. The Cards and Rockies play tonight, Saturday afternoon at 12:00 and Sunday afternoon at 1:15.
Zack Greinke pitched seven solid frames, as Kansas City edged Tampa Bay, 3-2, dropping the Rays into a tie with the idle New York Yankees for first place in the American League East with three games remaining for each team. Greinke (10-14) yielded just two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. Kila Ka'aihue drove in two runs for Kansas City, which has won three of four. The Rays and Royals play again tonight.
Jaroslav Halak made 30 saves to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 4-1 preseason win over the Chicago Blackhawks. David Perron, T.J. Oshie, Matt D'Agostini and Alex Steen had the goals for St. Louis, which improved to 4-2-0 this preseason. The Blues will face Dallas Saturday night and Chicago again Sunday in preseason play.
Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association have jointly announced changes to the free agency rules for the 2010 and 2011 off-seasons. The adjustments were negotiated in collective bargaining sessions between the MLBPA and Major League Baseball and stemmed from union concerns over the "operation of the free agent market during the past two off-seasons." According to both sides, the fifteen day period following the completion of the World Series in which teams had exclusive rights to negotiate with their own free agents will be shortened to five days. The modifications for 2010 also include a November 23 deadline for teams to offer arbitration and November 30 for players to accept arbitration and a December 2 date for clubs to make tender and non-tender decisions. They sides also agreed to stricter rules to guard against collusion during the free agent process, improved procedures for the transmittal of free agent players medical records and restrictions on the use of clubs, players and agents to conduct their free agent negotiations through the media.

Funeral services for Don Steven Hayes of Salem, age 54, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cavanaugh Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Family of Don Hayes.
Funeral services for Steven R. Cowan of Bunker, age 54, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Bunker Tabernacle. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the West Fork Cemetery in Boss. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
