The Salem Sesquicentennial Steering Committee is now accepting entries for the Salem 150
th anniversary logo contest. All local artists and graphic designers are encouraged to submit a design that will be used in marketing events for the 150
th year celebration in 2010. Entries must include: a graphic design; short slogan; and the words “Salem” and “150.” The selected logo will become the sole property of the City of Salem, and will be used in all marketing for 2010 sesquicentennial events, including flyers, utility pole banners and printed materials. The selected winner will be announced in local media, and will receive a Salem gift basket. Entries can be submitted through Wednesday, October 14

The general public will have its only opportunity of the year to tour an underground Doe Run lead mine during the upcoming Old Miners’ Day celebration in Viburnum. Guests may tour The Doe Run Company’s Buick Mine and Mill on Saturday, October 3rd. Tours will take place hourly from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Those who would like to take the tour must be 16 or older and sign up at the company’s Old Miners’ Day booth. Buses will transport guests to and from the tour site. It’s difficult to tell from the surface, but Doe Run’s mines are large underground structures that extend for miles. Four of the company’s six mines – Buick, Brushy Creek, Casteel and Fletcher – are interconnected by more than 20 miles of roadway and hundreds of side roads. Typically a pleasant 65 degrees, Doe Run lead mines are rocky and damp and may be as deep as 1,250 feet underground. The underground mining method, coupled with the minerals’ natural beauty, often creates glittering rock faces and dramatic rock pillars. In addition, employees from Doe Run’s SEMO Division will be on site to celebrate the region’s rich mining history alongside neighbors, guests and retired miners, and Doe Run is sponsoring a mining equipment display (above ground). Old Miners’ Day is a three-day celebration, taking place Friday through Sunday, October 2nd through the 4th in Viburnum. It honors generations of miners who paved the way for Missouri’s mining industry. Today, the state is home to one of the world’s most active lead mining districts, the Viburnum Trend.
Twelve students from Salem High School recently auditioned for the District Honor and Concert Choirs. Making the Honor Choir was Alex Bay, Jonathan Hambacker, Mitchell Lo, Steven Morton, and Adam Wood. The honor choir criteria are singing a solo, sight-reading and key signature identification. Juniors making the honor choir are then eligible to audition for the All State Choir on November 9th. This number will include Bay, Hambacker and Morton. Making the District Concert Choir was Blake Beeson, Amber Blaylock and Colton Malott. Their criteria also included singing a solo, sight-reading and key signature identification. The students will perform Saturday, November 14th at 5 p.m. at the Waynesville High School. All of these students are under the direction of Catherine Dent, vocal music instructor.
The 46th Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby “Fishing For A Cure” will be held at the Montauk State Park with all proceeds going to benefit the American Heart Association, on Saturday and Sunday, October 3rd and 4th.There will be a Cruise-Into-Montauk Car Show sponsored by the Current River Cruisers Car Club on Friday, October 2nd with 48 cars participating from 4:00 to 9:00 pm in the Searcy Building parking lot across from the lodge. For more information regarding the Car Show call 729-5781. Derby registration on Friday is from 5:00 to 8:30 pm. Derby registration on Saturday is from 6:30 am to 8:30 pm and the derby fishing hours on Saturday are 7:30 am to 6:30 pm. There will be live musical entertainment throughout the day, there will be “Hike For Your Heart” guided hikes from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and a night hike at 7:30 pm. Derby registration on Sunday will be from 6:30 am to 11:30 am and derby fishing hours on Sunday at from 7:30 am to 11:30 am. Prizes will be awarded at noon on Sunday in front of the lodge for the men and women’s heaviest trout caught, the kids heaviest stringer, the heaviest brown trout and the tagged fish caught and registered. The Salem Varsity Lady Softball Tigers dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Dixon in a makeup game Wednesday. The JV was victorious as they defeated Dixon, 5-1. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to be at Union today, weather permitting, starting at 4:30.
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host Thayer in SCA play tonight. The JV will start the action out at 6:00 with the varsity match to follow. The Salem varsity is 3-0 in the SCA. You can hear the varsity contest on KSMO beginning at about 7:10 on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.
Laynce Nix belted his first career grand slam and Bronson Arroyo came within two outs of a complete game as the Reds topped St. Louis, 6-1. Albert Pujols singled in a run for his 134th RBI of the season for the Cardinals, who lost for the fifth time in six contests. John Smoltz (1-3) struggled by allowing six hits and six runs over four innings. He also walked five batters and fanned three. The Cards will try to avoid a three-game sweep today starting at 11:15 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
John Buck's RBI triple in the seventh inning was the difference, as the Kansas City Royals edged the Yankees, 4-3. Brayan Pena drove in a pair of runs for the Royals. Mark Teahen also had an RBI in the triumph. Robinson Tejeda lasted five frames and gave up three runs on four hits and three walks to get a no-decision. Jamey Wright (3-5) got the win with two innings of scoreless relief. Joakim Soria notched his 30th save with a scoreless ninth. The Royals will have the day off today.
The Kansas City Chiefs have signed linebacker David Herron and cornerback Mike Richardson.
The St. Louis Blues have assigned defenseman Tyson Strachan to Peoria (AHL).

Funeral services for Wayne Thompson of Eureka, formerly of Salem, age 90, will be held today at 1:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Bay Cemetery.
Funeral services for Vena Romine of Steelville, age 90, will be held today at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Butts, MO.
Funeral services Leona Faye McDaniels of Salem, age 64, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time for service. Interment will be in the Round Pond Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Round Pound Cemetery, Local Chapter Relay For Life or Leona McDaniels Scholarship Fund.
