An accident at 11:21 Sunday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about four miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero driven by 24-year old Shane Rolfsmeyer of Lake St.Louis, was heading northbound and crossed the centerline. At that time, a 1999 Chevrolet Pickup driven by 72-year-old James Glenn of Salem, ran off the right of the road attempting to avoid the Oldsmobile. Both vehicles sideswiped each other. The pickup then came back on to the roadway and overturned landing on its top in the roadway. The Oldsmobile came to a stop off the roadway. Glenn suffered serious injuries and was taken by Air Evac to the University Hospital in Columbia. Charlotte Malone, a passenger of the 1999 Chevrolet, suffered serious injuries and was also taken by Air Evac to the University Hospital in Columbia. Rolfsmeyer suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District hospital. Everyone involved in the accident were wearing seat restraints. The pickup was totaled in the accident while the Olds Alero sustained extensive damage. Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight beginning at 7:00 in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington. During the hearing of persons, Phil Schmidt, the acting President of the Airport Board will discuss with the Board of Aldermen the need for a sixth director to be appointed to the Salem Airport Board, as well as the validity of city ordinance # 2546 affecting the authority and responsibilities of the Airport Board, and he would like to discuss re-establishing protocols for the operation and funding of the airport. Alderman Jim Jackson and Mike Whitley would like to discuss miscellaneous items involving the City, along with Alderman Bill Riley who would also like to discuss handicap ramps at Thomas and McGrath as well as lights in the housing center. Alderman Jim McDaniels would like to discuss maintenance on the new trucks, reports on this year’s asphalting and park renovation, the storm water problem and clean-up week. Mayor Gary Brown will then give his comments on various items involving the City. Under new and miscellaneous business, Chief of Police Clifford Jadwin would like to request the Board’s approval to set the hours for Halloween from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The board will also review mandated sewer hook-ups. According to the City Code, once sewer becomes available to a resident they must connect to the city’s sewer within 90 days. There are several residents who were notified they must connect to the sewer and they have not complied to date, with their notification received by them over six months ago. The Board needs to authorize what action should be taken. After the approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board will then go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assault, the firing of guns, and an active warrant and fighting. On September 21st at 6:10 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the 100 block of South Hickory in reference to a disturbance. The report revealed that a 29-year old Salem male had assaulted a 35-year old Salem male. He was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court and then released. On September 24th at 5:30 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the 400 block of South Missouri in reference to juveniles firing guns at a residence. The report revealed that two Salem male juveniles, one 13-year old and one 14-year old, had been firing rifles near and towards a residence in the 400 block of South Missouri. The juveniles were apprehended and found to be in possession of stolen firearms. Both were released to their parents and the report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer for further review. On September 25th at 11:26 in the morning, an officer made contact with a 31-year female at the station who had an active warrant for her arrest from Eureka. She was taken into custody and later released on a $200 cash bond. On September 26th at 12:45 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Salem High School in reference to a fight. The report led to the detention of two 16-year old female juveniles for fighting. Both were released to their parents and the report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer for further review. The annual Dent County Recognition Night will be held on Saturday, October 20th beginning at 5:30 pm at the Commons in the Youth Building. The evening will begin with a dinner followed by the Awards Ceremony. All 4-H families are asked to bring two covered dishes and table service. The meat, bread and drinks will be provided. This is a great time to celebrate the year’s accomplishments and honor those who have worked so hard in 4-H.

Yousef Ibrahim scored the game winning touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Cody Wofford with 11 second left as the Salem Tigers came back to beat Houston 15-12. Wofford finished the game with 127 yards rushing on 20 carries and a touchdown as Salem wins their first game and moves to 1-4 on the year. They will face Willow Springs Friday night at home.
The Salem Lady Softball Tigers wrap up their regular season this afternoon against the Lady Eagles of Mountain View-Liberty at the Salem Freedom Activity Center Field at 4:30.
Skip Schumaker finished 5-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs, as the St. Louis Cardinals wrapped up their 2007 season by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-5, at PNC Park. Cardinals’ starter Troy Percival allowed just a hit with two strikeouts before getting pulled after the first inning in the first major league start of his career. Kip Wells (7-17) took over for three scoreless innings to earn the win, and Jason Isringhausen tossed the final 1 1/3 innings for his 32nd save in 35 opportunities and 18th straight. Scott Spiezio homered for the Cardinals (77-84), who won their last five games.
Travis Hafner hit a two-run double as the AL Central champion Cleveland Indians ended their season with a 4-2 win over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Joey Gathright and Tony Pena each had an RBI for the Royals (69-93). Luke Hochevar (0-1) took the loss in his first major-league start, yielding three hits and two runs over three innings.
Patrick Crayton had seven catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns, and the Dallas Cowboys cruised to a 35-7 rout of the St. Louis Rams. Marc Bulger had a rough day for the Rams (0-4), completing only 11-of-24 passes for 114 yards, with an interception before being pulled late when the game was out of hand. Dante Hall's 85-yard punt return for a score was the lone bright spot for the Rams.
Dwayne Bowe caught eight balls for 164 yards and a touchdown as Kansas City scored 24 unanswered second-half points to top San Diego, 30-16, in a Week 4 clash at Qualcomm Stadium. Damon Huard completed 17-of-29 passes for 284 yards, two scores and a pair of picks for the Chiefs (2-2), who have won two in a row. Larry Johnson rushed 25 times for 123 yards in the win.

Funeral services for Edward A. Decker, age 81, of Licking, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the United Methodist Church in Licking. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Licking United Methodist Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home.
A memorial service for Wayne Barrett, age 88, of St. James, formerly of Salem, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice or the Missouri Veterans Home Assistance League.
