The Dent County Commission met Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5070, 5080, 5085, 5590 and 6460, while a crossover pipe would be installed by a work crew on county road 5460. Purcell reported brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 6300 and 6640. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson indicated materials would be added to and grading done on Dent County Road 3090, while only grading would be done on county roads 2530, 3010 and 3185. Larson did say brush would be cut on county roads 2340 and 6160. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said an electronics and tire collection and recycling would be held in Salem on October 18
th at Third and Grand Streets with more details to follow. He implied that a fee would be charged for the tires as well as TV’s and monitors, but did not have that information at this time. The MRPC Solid Waste Management District is sponsoring the event. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported on her Missouri County Clerks annual training held in Jefferson City last week. She was elected as the President of the South Central County Clerk’s Region. Absentee voting is currently going on now for the November General Election while voter registration will continue until October 8
th. Jill Callistro from the Dent County Women’s Crisis Center was in attendance to request a banner be placed on the gazebo at the Dent County Courthouse for the entire month of October to let people know it is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The commission approved her request. At the last meeting, Bill Urban visited with the commission about the ground lights that shine on the flagpole. He recommended new LED lights be installed and they be moved back from the shrubbery to allow for more light to get to the flag. The estimated cost would be between $500 and $600 and the commission approved the work to be done. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.
The Dent County Health Center Trustees met September 15th. At the meeting, the board signed an agreement to add a policy to the Administrative Manual that before any subsequent change is made to the retirement system, the Missouri State Social Security Administrator would be contacted to determine how that change would affect employees Social Security benefits. Jane Jadwin informed the board that Dr. Pharr will continue to be the Health Department’s Medical Director until he relocates from the area at the end of February. At the meeting, it was reported the WIC local agency plan was submitted and approved for the year beginning October 1st, and that all food service inspections are current and the yearly lodging inspections have been completed. It was also reported there were two positive tick related reports along with one positive case of whooping cough. It was reported that Kendra Mobray, RN attended Epidemiology training at the Department of Health in Jefferson City September 9th through the 11th and received her certification for communicable disease investigation and follow-up for public health. The board approved closing the Dent County Health Center on December 25th and 26th, and to hold a retirement party for Karen Green, RN who is retiring after 14 years. The next meeting will be held October 20th at 5:00. The meeting was then adjourned.
There will be a Special Meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman at the City Hall Council Chambers located 202 North Washington today beginning at 3:00 pm. The Special meeting will be to consider Bill #3281, an ordinance amending the budget for 2013/2014 as approved by Ordinance #3271. They will also consider a road closure request by the Salem United Methodist Church, a request for Certification Endorsement for Missouri Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) application by Bryan and Kim Kemnitrzer for a Health Clinic for the working poor. The Board will discuss Bill #3282, an ordinance to authorize the mayor to execute a contract between the City of Salem and the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission providing for an airport master plan and Bill #3283, an ordinance to authorize the mayor to execute a contract between the City of Salem and the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission providing for an amendment to the state block grant agreement for pavement maintenance and FAA flight check. The Special Meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.
The Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center will be hosting an exhibit in October, entitled “Artists in the Woods” This exhibit will display various items that are hand made from wood along with paintings and photographs taken in the wooded areas of the Ozarks. If you have items that you would be willing to display, please call the ONCRC at 573-729-0029 or 573-247-6822. All items will need to be delivered to the ONCRC, 202 S. Main St. in Salem between the hours of 9 to 5 starting today thru October 3rd. The items will be on display from October 6th through October 31st.
Flu Shots are available at the Dent County Health Center on a walk-in basis, Monday through Friday. The cost is $30, and they will bill Medicare, but you need to bring your card with you. The Center for Disease Control recommends an annual flu shot for all those 6-months of age and over. The Health Center is located at 601 North McArthur. For more information call 729-3106.

Camryn Pryor went 3-3 with two doubles and drove in five runs as the Salem Tigers blasted the St. Clair Lady Bulldogs on Monday, 15-0 in three innings. Savannah Hanning went 2-3, scored twice and knocked in three runs, and Payton Curley went 3-3 with a triple and two singles, scored twice and knocked in a run. Salem is now 12-3 on the year and they will be in Newburg to face the Lady Wolves starting at 5:00 tonight.
Jamaal Charles returned from a sprained right ankle and scored three touchdowns as the Kansas City Chiefs routed the New England Patriots, 41-14. The Chiefs will be in San Francisco on Sunday to face the 49ers.
The Kansas City Royals will host the Oakland Athletics tonight at Kauffman Stadium in the American League Wild Card game. Winner will move on to the ALDS to face the L.A. Angels. James Shields will take the mound for KC while the A’s will send up Jon Lester. First pitch is set for 7:07 tonight.
The St. Louis Blues will host the Carolina Hurricanes tonight in preseason action at the Scottrade Center. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 7:00.

Funeral services for Vernon ‘Gene’ Fink of Troy, age 90, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time this morning. Interment will be in the Lake Spring Cemetery.
Funeral services for Hack Lea of Steelville, age 83, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Steelville Cemetery or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Funeral services for Ethel Mae Gunset of St. James, age 97, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time.
Funeral services for Meriam Annette Cobb of Moberly, age 85, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Central Missouri Humane Society.
