Three Salem turnovers in the first half that led to 21 points helped propel Ava to a 28-7 lead at halftime and they cruised to a 44-7 win over the football Tigers Friday night. Salem’s lone touchdown was on a ten-yard run by Dylan Wisdom. Salem was held to under 100 yards offense by the Ava defense. Salem is now 3-2 and 1-1 in the SCA and will have their homecoming game Friday night against Willow Springs at 7:00. The Homecoming Candidates for this year include Erica Rushing representing the Sophomore class, Savannah Hanning representing the Junior class, and the senior queen candidates are Gabby Sanderson, Gracie Fiaoni and Kristin Hemkin.
The Salem Lady Tiger Softball team will be playing at St. Clair this afternoon. The Lady Tigers are 11-7 on the year and the game will get underway at 4:30.
Jon Jay, Daniel Descalso and Shane Robinson each drove in a run to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-0 win over the Chicago Cubs in the final game of the regular season. Joe Kelly (10-5) picked up the win after tossing 5 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. He allowed three hits and fanned five in the win. St. Louis tied the Boston Red Sox for the top record in the majors, and hold home-field advantage throughout the playoffs starting on Thursday against the National League Wild Card winner.
Salvador Perez went 3-for-4 and homered for the second straight game as the Kansas Royals clipped the Chicago White Sox, 4-1, in the season finale from U.S. Cellular Field. Brett Hayes also homered in the triumph while Johnny Giavotella had a pair of hits and two walks. Bruce Chen (9-4) capped an impressive season by allowing a run on four hits over 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Kansas City finished with 86 wins, it’s most since winning 92 games in 1989.
James Franklin completed 20-of-29 passes for 255 yards and three scores as the Missouri Tigers used a strong second half to take down the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 41-19, in a non-conference matchup at Faurot Field. James also added 33 yards and a touchdown rushing for Missouri (4-0), which is off to its best start since 2010 when it opened with seven straight wins. The team ran for 239 yards, with Russell Hansbrough leading the way with 96 yards on just eight carries. Dorial Green-Beckham hauled in four passes for 95 yards and two scores, while L'Damien Washington tallied six receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown. Missouri will play Vanderbilt this Saturday night.
Alex Smith threw three touchdown passes while getting plenty of help from his defense and special teams, and the Kansas City Chiefs maintained their surprising early-season success with a 31-7 rout of the wayward New York Giants. Smith shook off a pair of interceptions to throw for 288 yards on 24-of-41 passing, while Jamaal Charles accumulated 127 yards from scrimmage and caught one of Smith's touchdown strikes to help Kansas City (4-0) to its best four- game start to a season since 2003. The Chiefs will play the Titans on Sunday.
