The Salem Police Department released some recent reports. On Saturday, September 25th at 12:30 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a lost or stolen wallet. The victim had been shopping at Wal-Mart and had left the wallet in a shopping cart when leaving. Upon returning to Wal-Mart the wallet could not be located. At 4:25 that same afternoon, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem woman for stealing $38.83 worth of merchandise. She was issued a summons on the stealing charge and for resisting arrest. During the arrest, the subject was discovered to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and narcotics. She was also issued a summons on the drug paraphernalia and incarcerated on the narcotics pending the issuance of a warrant. On Sunday, September 26th at 8:00 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem woman for stealing $16.00 worth of merchandise. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Monday, September 27th at 11:00 in the morning, an officer responded to Gas Plus on West Rolla Road in reference to a person leaving without paying for their fuel. The investigation revealed that back on September 16th at 1:00 in the afternoon, a female subject acquired $25.00 in fuel and left without paying for the fuel. At 2:00 that afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 1300 block of East Iron Mountain Road in reference to a burglary. The investigation of the report revealed that between 8:00 in the evening of September 26th and 11:00 in the morning on September 27^th, a person or persons unknown entered the residence and took a cell phone and other miscellaneous items without permission. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Old Miners' Day will be held in Viburnum from October 1^st to the 3^rd. This year marks the 23rd annual celebration of the area's rich history in leading the world in lead mining. A parade, games, food, an auto show, and best of all...free underground mine tours are sure to keep your family entertained. This year's featured entertainment will be a concert by country singer, Rickie Lee Tanner. The concert is scheduled for 6 p.m. on October 2^nd in the Elmer P. Beard Gymnasium in Viburnum. Tickets are $8.00 for the concert, and that ticket will also give you access to the dance in the gymnasium at 9 p.m., which will continue to feature music by Rickie Lee Tanner and his band. Rickie Lee Tanner has won numerous singing and songwriting competitions, and has also made an impressive showing in contests such as Nashville Star, and the Colgate Country Showdown where he was a state finalist. Rickie has performed on television shows like Smart Country and Nashville On Stage.

The United States Attorney’s Office announced that 40-year old Larry T. Nason pleaded guilty Monday to illegal possession of a firearm. Nason of Rolla entered his plea to one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm before United States District Judge E. Richard Webber.  Due to his previous criminal history, he is forbidden by law to own or possess a firearm.  He now faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000, when he is sentenced on December 20, 2010. The South Central Drug Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated this case.  Assistant United States Attorney Jeannette Graviss is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The Salem Farmers’ Market will host “October Fest” on Saturday, October 2^nd at the market pavilion located behind the Salem Visitors’ Center at 200 South Main Street. This special event will feature breakfast, hot apple cider, bratwurst, hotdogs, pumpkin and apple pies, crafts, gifts, chair massages, bobbing for apples, pumpkin decorating and more. Vendor booths are $5.00 and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The City Wide Yard Sale will be held Saturday throughout Salem as maps are now available at convenience stores as well as in the September 28^th edition of the Salem News. Maps are also available at sites around town, including The Salem News, city administrative building and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. The city offers yard sale spots on the parking lot behind the city administration building at Fourth and Iron Streets.
