The Wurdack Farm Field Day will be held this Friday and this year there will be a demonstration of a portable sawmill as well as talks on forage, timber management and agroforestry. The field day will begin at 11:30 with lunch and followed by wagon tours of research and development projects on the farm. MU Extension beef nutritionalist Justin Sexten will talk on evaluating pasture supplementation of fall-born calves using distillers grains fed either on the ground or in a bunk in a managed grazing system. He will present an economic simulation of purchasing bunks compared to ground feeding and discuss the advantages and disadvantages with each system. Brent Carpenter, a research associate for the MU Food and Agriculture Policy Research Institute will discuss “Aftershocks in the Grain Market” that will address factors that have heavily influenced feed costs. MU Extension forage specialist Rob Kallenbach will discuss managing a mixture of warm-season and cool-season grasses with his presentation, “Adding Bermuda Grass to a Tall Fescue System.” MU Entomologist Wayne Bailey will present details of his two-year study of native fescues and how they perform in terms of yield and insect problems, MU Center for Agroforestry research specialist Dusty Walker will demonstrate the portable sawmill and give updates on the five-year silvopasture thinning timber stands, and MU forestry graduate student Stacey Smith will discuss a long-term project to replant a dry and south-sloping area of Wurdack, replacing the ill-suited oak, hickory and ash with pines to be planted this fall. Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, would like to invite the public to an open house at Troop I Headquarters on Saturday, October 3rd. Troop I is located on Missouri Route E in Rolla, approximately 1/4 mile north of the Interstate 44 interchange. Troop I will open its doors to the public from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and will provide displays, safety demonstrations, and the opportunity to tour the Troop I facility. Some of these displays will include the Highway Patrol's state-of-the-art Mobile Command Unit, Highway Patrol motorcycles, and a Patrol helicopter. Highway Patrol vehicles, such as a 1959 Dodge, and a "Bearcat" armored personnel carrier used by SWAT team members, also will be available for the public to view. Seat belt safety demonstrations will be given using the rollover simulator and the seat belt convincer. As a courtesy for those in attendance, Troop I will provide free hamburgers, hotdogs, and drinks. Captain Kenley is looking forward to showcasing their facilities and some of the equipment the troopers use to help make Missouri a safer place. While visiting, anyone that may have an interested in the Patrol as a career, is encouraged to visit with a trooper and learn more about the many opportunities and benefits they have to offer.
A two-day Management Intensive Grazing School Seminar will be held at the University of Missouri Wurdack Farm on Thursday and Friday, October 8th and 9th. The cost of the two-day seminar is $85.00 per person or $125.00 per farm couple. A $50.00 deposit is required and very little seating remains. The University of Missouri Extension, the MU College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources, the MU Agricultural Experiment Station, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Soil and Water Conservation Districts are sponsoring the two-day Management Intensive Grazing School Seminar. An accident happened at 5:00 pm Monday evening in Phelps County on Route D about two miles north of Jerome that took the life of a St. James man. According to the highway patrol report, a 1986 Honda motorcycle driven by 51-year old Rodney Light of St. James was traveling northbound on Route D. The Honda ran off the left side of the road ejecting Light. Coroner Larry Swinford pronounced Rodney Light dead at the scene at 9:12 pm. The Honda motorcycle was totaled and removed from the scene by C&C Towing.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers defeated the Willow Springs Lady Bears last night in two straight games, 25-10 and 25-16. Amy Huitt served 10 straight points to finish out the second game. Salem is now 3-0 in the SCA. The Lady Tiger JV also won in two straight games. The Thayer Lady Bobcats will coming to town Thursday night at 6:00 starting with the JV action. Jay Bruce smacked a three-run homer and a two-run shot, both off Joel Pineiro, as the Cincinnati Reds smothered the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-2, in the opener of a three-game series. Pineiro (15-12) surrendered eight hits and seven runs over six frames to lose for the third time in four starts. Albert Pujols knocked in a run for St. Louis. He has 133 RBI this season, four shy of a career-best, set in 2006. David Freese belted his first career homer in defeat. The Cards and Reds play tonight at 5:50 on KSMO Radio.
Juan Miranda smoked an infield single off the glove of Royals reliever Kyle Farnsworth to score the deciding run, as the Yankees produced their 15th walk-off victory of the year with a 4-3 win against Kansas City. Anthony Lerew, making his second start of the season, limited the Yanks to a pair of runs on five hits over six full frames. He struck out three and walked two in only his fifth career start. Billy Butler had an RBI single and Mitch Maier a run-scoring groundout for Kansas City, which has lost six of seven. The two teams play again tonight.
St. Louis Rams linebacker David Vobora has been suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances.
St. Louis Rams wide receiver Laurent Robinson will likely miss the rest of the season with a fractured fibula and sprained ankle, while safety James Butler has a third degree MCL strain in his knee and is out two-to-four weeks.
In need of a quarterback after the injury to Chad Pennington, the Miami Dolphins acquired Tyler Thigpen from the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick. To fill Thigpen's spot on the roster, the Chiefs signed former Cardinals tight end Leonard Pope.
