Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse, the Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting. In the road report, Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Road 5530 while other workers were doing extensive maintenance to another grader in the shop. Simpson also said that crews were working on Dent County Road 4230 by installing a couple of new pipes in an attempt to keep the road from washing out during storms. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune stated that workers are pouring a replacement slab on the bridge at Dent County Road 4290 and Route MM. He said that the road would be closed for a few days so people will need to take an alternative route. Tune also said that the Crisco Bridge on Dent County Road 2240 is still closed and should re-open around the middle of the week. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles stated that he attended a Rolla Regional Economic Commission meeting Friday in Rolla. He said that there could be a lot of employment opportunities in the next few years with the plans they are developing that can benefit the people of Dent County. Skiles stated that Katie Hunt would be awarded the Youth Outstanding Community Services Award at the MRPC Annual Dinner in St. Robert on November 12th. KSMO Radio Station owner Stan Podorski will also be honored at the dinner. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley again is reminding citizens that you have until October 8th to register to vote. Absentee voting is currently going on and will continue through November 3rd. She said that she would be participating in a joint chamber, county and city workshop concerning the website today at the Salem TCRC, and would be attending a county worker training seminar at the Phelps County Courthouse on Wednesday. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

An accident happened at 5:57 Sunday evening in Phelps County on Phelps County Road 2030 about two miles north of Rolla that took the life of a Rolla teen. According to the highway patrol report, an MTD yard machine riding-mower driven by 16-year old Joshua Frost of Rolla was traveling northbound around a curve and traveled off the left side of the roadway. The mower traveled down an embankment, struck a fence and several small trees. The mower overturned ejecting Frost. A passenger, 20-year old Justin Cook of Rolla, was also ejected from a towed unit behind the mower. Phelps County Coroner Larry Swinfard pronounced Frost dead at the scene at 6:30 pm. Cook suffered minor injuries and declined treatment at the scene. The riding-mower was removed from the scene by the owner.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assault, a traffic violation and a fight in progress. On Friday, September 26th at 4:30 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of East 4th Street in reference to an assault. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 42-year old Salem man on the assault. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Sunday, September 28th at 1:30 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 29-year old Salem man for Driving While Intoxicated and Careless and Imprudent Driving. He was issued summons to appear in court and released. Also on Sunday at 2:00 that afternoon, an officer was detailed to the area of 200 South Warfel in reference to a fight in process. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 29-year old Salem woman for an assault. She was incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers dropped a 17-0 decision to St. Clair yesterday to drop to 7-11 on the year. The JV game was rained out. The Lady Tigers will face Union on Thursday.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will travel to Willow Springs to face the Lady Bears in SCA play tonight at 6:00 with the JV game first followed by the varsity contest. Salem is 1-1 in the SCA.

The St. Louis Cardinals and starting pitcher Kyle Lohse agreed to a four-year contract on Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but a St. Louis newspaper reports the deal is worth $41 million. Lohse finished with a career- high 15 wins in addition to a 3.78 earned- run average with 119 strikeouts in 200 innings. He only lost six of his 33 starts. It was the first time Lohse finished with double-digit wins since a 14-11 campaign in Minnesota in 2003.

The first coaching casualty of the young NFL season is Scott Linehan of the St. Louis Rams. Team officials held a meeting following Sunday's 31-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills and decided to fire Linehan after an 0-4 start to the 2008 season. The Rams were 8-8 in Linehan's first season of 2006 and finished a dismal 3-13 last year. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, a former head coach with the New Orleans Saints, will take over on an interim basis.

A funeral mass for Rita Mae Heeney of Salem, age 87, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.  All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary.

Funeral services for Joseph Franklin Kuntz, Sr. of Salem, age 64, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Empire Cemetery.

Funeral services for Ruth Carmack of Steelville, age 81, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Schwieder Cemetery in Steelville. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Funeral services for Pearlie Lorraine Fitchhorn of Salem, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Faith Assembly.

A memorial visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 for Bradley Edward Brawner, Jr. of Steelville, age 18, at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Memorial services for Jonathan Ray Wood of Bunker, age 39, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 until time of service. Memorials are suggested to the Crossville Baptist Church in Bunker.

Funeral services for Milton Lavern Camden of Lenox, age 75, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Boss Cemetery.
