An accident happened Tuesday morning at 10:00 in Shannon County on Shannon County Road 19-364 about three miles north of Shannondale. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Bombardier Traxter XT driven westbound by 69-year old Gail J. Blackwell of Salem, overturned and landed on the driver. Blackwell suffered moderate injuries and was taken by Air Evac to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. The Bombardier had no damages and was removed from the scene by the owner.
The Salem Police Department released their report involving a counterfeit bill, a leave without paying for fuel, a theft in progress and a fight in progress. On Tuesday, September 21st at 9:50 am, an officer was detailed to Town and Country Bank on Highway 32 West in reference to a counterfeit bill. The investigation of the report revealed that a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill was received in the night deposit. At 12:51 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the Casey’s General Store on South Macarthur in reference to leaving without paying for gas. The investigation of the report revealed that a 43-year-old Salem female left without paying for approximately $20.00 in fuel. She returned later to pay for the fuel and the incident appeared to be inadvertent. On Wednesday, September 22nd at 6:00 in the evening an officer responded to Dollar General in reference to a counterfeit bill. Investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown passed a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. On Thursday, September 23rd at 1:52 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 600 block of West Gibbs in reference to a theft in progress. Investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 21-year old male of Salem, and a 20-year old male of St. Louis, for stealing property valued $530 as well as a bankcard from the console of a vehicle. Both were incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Then at 10:20 that night, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of West Gibbs in reference to a fight in progress. Investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 25-year old Salem male for assault. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding the counterfeit bills reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
The 47th Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby, sponsored by the anglers and friends of the Montauk State Park, will be held this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 1st, 2nd and 3rd at Montauk State Park. Registration will begin Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 pm, along with the Cruise-in Car Show from 4:00 to 9:00 and Trout Bingo begins at 6:00 pm. On Saturday, registration will be from 6:30 am to 9:00 pm and the derby fishing hours will be from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm. Saturday will also feature free health screenings by the Salem Memorial District Hospital from 9:00 am to noon. You can also shop the Country Store and bake sale from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm; take guided hikes at 10:00 am, 1:30 pm and after dark at 7:30 pm; enjoy the live entertainment from noon until 4:30 pm in front of the Montauk Lodge and be part of an auction that starts ar 5:00 pm. Then on Sunday, registration will be from 6:30 to 11:30 am and you can fish in the derby from 7:30 to 11:30 am. Prizes will be awarded in front of the lodge at noon for tagged fish caught and registered, the men’s and women’s heaviest rainbow trout, kids heaviest stringer and heaviest brown trout and more. All proceeds will go to benefit the American Heart Association.
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has directed the Literacy component of Adult Education and Literacy Program for the Rolla area, which includes Phelps, Dent, Maries and Crawford counties to reorganize the formerly active Literacy Councils. Volunteer tutors are needed in the program, according to Literacy Coordinator Shirley Hobson and also needed are support groups. The plan at this point is to start a small group for each area served. Various person from the areas have agreed to be a part of this and if anyone is interested in serving on a council or training to become a tutor, please call Shirley Hobson at (573) 458-0101 EXT. 15151.
This Friday night will be Homecoming at the Salem High School and the queen will be announced prior to the football game at the Salem High School Football Field. The sophomore class attendant will be Olivia Elliot, the junior class attendant will be Katy Vaughn, and the three senior class queen candidates are Rachel Arts, Ashley Greenshields and Asley Jadwin.
Local historian Ken Fiebelman’s Volume 7 of the Ozark Heritage History Book, Sesquicentennial Pictorial Edition, was recently released. The book features 3800 photographs and stories never used in previous books. The price is $106.75 by check or money order, and layaways are also available, if it is more convenient. The Salem Lady Volleyball Varsity Tigers defeated the Cabool Lady Bulldogs Tuesday night at the Salem High School Gym in three games to get their first SCA win of the year. Salem won the first game, 25-23; then lost the second game by the score of 25-10. Salem then took advantage of a number of Lady Bulldog errors and took the third game by the score of 25-18. Salem is now 1-2 in the SCA. They will be at Willow Springs this Thursday night starting at 6:00.
The Salem Lady JV Volleyball Tigers fell to the Lady Bulldogs of Cabool Tuesday night in three games. The Lady Bulldogs won the first game, 25-18 before the Lady Tigers roared back in game two, winning 25-23. The Lady Bulldogs then held off Salem in the third game and beat Salem, 25-18. The JV Lady Tigers will be at Willow Springs as well Thursday night.
Garrett Jones went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and knocked in three, as the Pittsburgh Pirates earned a 7-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the second of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Matt Pagnozzi hit his first-career homer for St. Louis, which was eliminated from playoff consideration earlier when the Cincinnati Reds defeated Houston. Jeff Suppan (2-8) worked 5 1/3 innings and surrendered four runs -- three earned -- on five hits with one walk while fanning three. The Cards and Pirates finish up their series this afternoon at 12:20 on KSMO.
St. Louis Cardinals have announced that pitcher Adam Wainwright likely will not pitch again in 2010. The right-hander was scratched from his next scheduled start Thursday against Colorado as a precaution due to a right forearm muscle strain. He ranks second in the National League in wins, ERA and innings pitched -- with 230 1/3 -- while he is third in the circuit with a career-high 213 strikeouts.
Kila Ka'aihue hit two home runs, finished with three hits and scored four times, as Kansas City waxed Minnesota, 10-1, for its second straight victory in the three-game series. Sean O'Sullivan (4-6) picked up the victory, scattering five hits and just one run with one strikeout and six walks over six-plus frames. He was aided by an offensive outburst, as Mike Aviles finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Josh Fields recorded two hits and a run scored for the Royals. The Royals and Twins play the finale of their three game set tonight.

Funeral services for Susan Leona Smith of Platte City, Missouri, formerly of Rolla, age 67, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. No Interment was indicated.
Funeral services for Don Steven Hayes of Salem, age 54, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cavanaugh Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Family of Don Hayes.
