An accident happened at 9:40 Tuesday morning in Phelps County on Route O about three miles south of Rolla that took the life of a Rolla man. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo driven by 50-year old Jimmie Gantz of Rolla, was traveling northbound on Route O, and crossed the centerline, sideswiping a 1997 Ford F-250 pickup driven by 23-year old Aaron Pederson of Anutt who was traveling southbound. Both vehicles then ran off the roadway. Pederson suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene. Gantz was transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla where Dr. Peter McCarthy pronounced Gantz dead at 10:54 am. Gantz was the only one not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Aveo was totaled and removed from the scene by Ron Dishman Towing of Rolla. The Ford F250 sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held a special meeting Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. The board discussed Ordinance #3241 concerning the rate increase of 7.11% by Ameren Missouri for natural gas and the city’s franchise tax. The board had the choice of rolling back the franchise tax to 4.67% or keeping the tax at 5%. The board voted to keep the franchise tax rate at 5% and by law that had to be done by September 29th. The board also approved Bill #3242 that requires the Park Board to meet at least twice a year and allows them to make written recommendations to the Board of Aldermen instead of the Community Services Committee. The board also discussed the duties of the new City Administrator and the Director of Public Works. The city has just established the duties of the City Administrator by ordinance, and reviewed the City of Rolla and City of West Plains general supervisor descriptions. Mayor Gary Brown also contributed some ideas and City Attorney William Camm Seay thought it best to review the current ordinance for the City Administrator and the current ordinance for the Director of Public Works and remove any duplication in those ordinances. He would then incorporate some of the ideas from the other cities description as well as what the mayor contributed to come up with an ordinance that would be ready at the next meeting for their review. He would also incorporate those responsibilities in the absence of the city administrator due to illness, vacation or disability. It was also thought that the new city administrator should review the new description as well once he begins his duties on October 3rd and the board agreed. Mayor Brown also reported that the spring cleanup week would be held the week of October 10th. The meeting was then adjourned.
