The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5080, 5100, 5390, 5410 and 5550. He also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5520. In District 2, Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2330, 3020 and 3025 while grading will be done and material would be added to Dent County Road 2160. He went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 3140, 3150 and 4290 while brush-cutter #4 is being repaired by two men. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the MRPC annual dinner would be held on November 9th at Linn State Technical College in Linn. Skiles said that he nominated Jim and Diane Boulware to be awarded for their volunteer efforts, and he also said that Lane Howard would be presented with the Youth Volunteer Award. Mayor Gary Brown from the City of Salem made an appearance at the meeting to say that he had nominated Jay Anderson to be honored for his volunteer efforts during the city’s celebration of their Sesquicentennial. Skiles said that at the last meeting the commissioners agreed to send a letter to the Missouri Department of Conservation stating their opposition to the re-introduction of elk to Carter, Shannon and Reynolds counties. The commissioners were reviewing a draft of the letter to be sent which is due on Friday. Jerry Lough from Canoak USA talked with the commissioners about Dent County Road 6430. He said that because of the amount of 18-wheel truck traffic on the road and where it intersects Route F, the state says that the road needs to be moved to a safer intersection location. Lough said that the road would also need to be wider and raised in some areas to accommodate the number of trucks that already use the facility and he expects that number to grow. The reconstruction would be about 2/10ths of a mile and he is asking the county to help with the dirt work to prepare the new road so that it can settle over the winter before it is finished next year. The commission will have to review their budget, but feel that they should be able to help. Linda Harris from the License Bureau attended the meeting and said that she received a letter from the state stating that there would be zero tolerance on personal property tax verification. She said that the County Assessor, County Collector and the license bureau who already work well together, must now work together to eliminate any human errors on property taxes and property tax waivers. She said that failure to do so may result in the cancellation of her contract with the state. At the last meeting, the commissioners approved unanimously to appoint John Johnston to another term on the Tourism Tax Committee. Martha Sellers from Crawford County Child Support came in to have the commissioners sign a Cooperative Agreement for Child Support. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a workshop, called by Mayor Gary Brown today in the City Council Chambers beginning at 1:30 pm. The workshop will be to discuss an employee handbook. The employee handbook workshop is open to the public.

The Salem Ranger District of the Mark Twain National Forest is seeking you comments on a proposal for the Scotia Cemetery Prescribed Burn Project. This project is located on about 285 acres of National Forest System lands and consists of a 24-acre burn. The primary purpose is to improve the conditions of under story vegetation and to provide increased protection for heritage resources in a portion of the Nova Scotia Ironworks, an area of special historical significance that was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Salem Ranger District is proposing prescribed burn treatments to reduce encroaching vegetation which currently obstructs archaeological resources present, to improve the quality of vegetation, and to reduce hazardous fuels. All fuels will be removed from grave markers, monuments, or any other elements that could be damaged from the fire. Comments should be specific to the project. Written or oral comments may be submitted via mail, telephone or in person. Include you name, address, title of the project, your comments and your signature. Written comments should be addressed to James Turner, Environmental Coordinator, Salem Ranger District, 1301 South Main Street, Salem, MO 65560 or call 729-2867, Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.
