The Salem Memorial District Hospital regular board meeting was held Thursday evening after the audit report from BK & D CPA’s and financial advisors. Since the hospital did not have a regular meting in August, the summary of operations for the first two months of the fiscal year showed revenues over expenses of  $438,938 after unrestricted tax revenues. Inpatient admission for the first two month of the fiscal year were way up to 162 while the outpatient registrations continued to rise and were at 3,622 for two months. The hospital summary also showed that increased over the first two months by 286,049 while days in accounts receivable did rise to 45 days from their low of 39 days set back in June. In the nurses report for August, there were 860 emergency room visits with 60 of those patients being admitted to acute care, 90 emergency room transfers, 208 ambulance runs with 232 patients being assessed, 39 surgery cases, 234 home health visits, 9,114 lab tests, 1,363 radiological procedures, 381 CT scans, 17 MRI cans, 22 nuclear med scans, 347 rehab treatments, 219 dialysis treatments and 389 clinical visits. The board approved courtesy staff privileges to David Hagedorn, MD; D. Sean Smith, DO; James Roscoe, MD; C. Paul Schaefer, DO; Frank Frederick, DO; Ryan Hall, DO; and Craig Simons, DO. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that there were 160 participants during the Men’s Health Screening held in August to bring the total number of people attending the health screenings to 604 for the year. After a brief discussion, the board approved adding to the Board of Directors A. J. Seay to replace Sheila Kunkel who had moved out of her district. The finance committee was then named with Joe Brand as chairperson with A.J. Seay and Judy Thompson as members. The board then approved the use of Schwartz and Associates for the updating of the SMDH video for recruiting purposes for $39,880. This was the same firm that did the original video. The video will be paid out of the physician’s recruitment budget. The board approved the budgeted purchase of 12 acute care mattresses from Medline for $2,650, a business office chair from Automated Business Systems for $362, two EMS and Surgery monitors from CDW-G for $233, a video monitor for the endoscope tower in surgery for $5,125 from Apronix Imaging, a refurbished podiatry tourniquet for surgery from World Medical for $4,457 and the painting and updating of the hallways and cafeteria from D. Roberts for $5,600. Non-budgeted items approved were four infection control respiratory hygiene stations from Cardinal Healthcare for $911, a Statspin Express 2 Centrifuge for the laboratory for $1,550 from Fisher Healthcare, a security switch and Smartrack from CompUSA for the information systems at a cost of $4,525, and a fire alarm system for Physicians Office Building One from Rommell’s Lock and Alarm for $4,940. The board sold a Pentax model FB 15BS Bronchoscope to med Market Place for $2,500. It was originally bought back in June of 2001 for $7,847. Administrator Pryor also reported that the Missouri Department of Natural Resources said that hospital will need to make changes in the near future for use of the hospital lagoon. The hospital has 60 days to have a plan of how this will be done. The board approved engineering studies to be done not to exceed $3,000. After viewing a Heart Lifeline Alliance video that featured a story about strangers to Dent County that had to us the alliance to save a man’s life that featured the Salem Memorial District Hospital, the board went into closed session.

The Seasonal Flu Clinic will be held Thursday, October 1st, at the Salem Freedom Activity Center sponsored by the Dent County Health Center. The clinic will be held from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM and the cost will be $20. Medicare or Medicaid will be accepted at the clinic.

The Salem Tigers football team beat the Willow Springs Bears 36-15 Friday night. Andy Kissir ran for 125 yards and had four touchdowns to lead the Tigers. Derek Freeman ran for a team high 151 yards, and Johnny Boyd added a touchdown. Salem is now 3-2 on the year, 2-2 in the SCA, and they will be at Mountain View this Friday at 7:00.

The Salem Softball Tigers will be at St. Clair today at 4:30.

Blaine Gabbert threw for 414 yards and three touchdowns on 25-of-40 efficiency to lead the Missouri Tigers in a 31-21 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack in a non-conference affair at Mackay Stadium. Danario Alexander hauled in nine passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers (4-0), who got 72 yards and a TD on eight grabs from Jared Perry. Derrick Washington tallied 75 yards on 16 touches. Mizzou will open up Big 12 play on October 8th, a Thursday night match up with Nebraska.

Todd Helton's single scored Carlos Gonzalez in the fifth inning for the go-ahead run and Clint Barmes pulled off a sensational double play to end the game and give Colorado a 4-3 victory over St. Louis. Albert Pujols provided the lone scoring salvo for St. Louis with a three-run double in the third inning, while Kyle Lohse (6-9) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on six hits over five innings to absorb the loss. Saturday's victory gave St. Louis its first division crown since 2006 as the Red Birds will be off today.

Yuniesky Betancourt went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and two runs scored, as the Kansas City Royals took down the red-hot Minnesota Twins, 4-1, to avoid a three-game sweep at Kauffman Stadium. Zack Greinke (16-8) was sold in seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits with eight strikeouts and two walks to take the win for the Royals, who snapped a four-game skid. The American League Cy Young Award candidate has given up just four earned runs over his last seven starts, going 4-0 during that span. Joakim Soria tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth to pick his 29th save. The Royals will travel to New York to face the Yankees tonight.

Aaron Rodgers passed for 269 yards with two touchdowns and ran for another score, as the Green Bay Packers crushed the St. Louis Rams, 36-17, at Edward Jones Dome. Steven Jackson had 27 carries for 117 yards and Daniel Fells had a pair of TD catches for the Rams (0-3), who have started 0-3 for the third straight season and have dropped 13 in a row. Marc Bulger finished 3-of-4 passing for 23 yards and a fumble before leaving late in the first quarter with a bruised right shoulder. Kyle Boller took over and threw for 164 yards on 16-of-31 attempts, including two touchdown passes.

Kevin Kolb threw for 327 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Philadelphia Eagles in a 34-14 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs and overshadowing Michael Vick's return to the football field. Matt Cassel passed for only 90 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-18 attempts for the Chiefs who fall to 0-3 on the year. The Chiefs gained only 196 total yards in the game, as Larry Johnson ran for 38 yards on 19 carries and Jamaal Charles had 36 rushing yards and 34 receiving yards.

The St. Louis Blues signed veteran defenseman Darryl Sydor to a one-year contract on Friday.

Funeral services for Mary Ann Cornick of St. James, age 89, will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. James. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the Catholic Cemetery in St. James. A prayer service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00.

Funeral services for Pauline “Alma” Thurmond of Cuba, age 54, will be held Wednesday at 3:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time.
