The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that conditions are too dry for grading, so crews are out checking road signs, hauling gravel to the crusher and cutting brush on Dent County Road 421. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 207 and 438 and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 326 and 329. Tune also said that a crew would be on Dent County Road 225 determining the best spot to place a drainpipe.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended an Ozark Riverways Solid Waste Management meeting Tuesday in St. James. At the meeting, $300,000 in grant money was distributed to 15 applicants for waste management. Skiles said Dent County did not receive any money, because no one applied.  Skiles also attended a Meremac Regional Emergency Planning Committee meeting on Wednesday; at that meeting the Dent County Fire Department received $1000 in grant money for Hazmat Training. Bernie English came by the meeting to ask the Commission about Dent County Road 609. The roads approach onto Route F is being looked at by MODOT and English wanted to know if the roads approach onto Highway 32 West was also being looked at.  The Commission said that MODOT is in the beginning process of straightening Highway 32 West and doesn’t believe the approach has been addressed by MODOT. Betty Wisdom from Bunker also came by the meeting to discuss with the Commission the possibility of Dent County assisting with road projects in the Bunker area that are partially in Dent County.  The Commission said they would discuss the topic more and get back with Wisdom.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident happened Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 in Crawford County on Evans Road about four miles north of Cuba. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Ford pickup driven by 16-year old Peter Kraus of Cook Station was traveling eastbound on Evans Road. Kraus lost control of the pickup and traveled off the roadway, up a dirt embankment and then overturned. Kraus suffered moderate injuries and was taken by private vehicle to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The Ford sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Miles Towing of Cuba. No citations at this time.

An accident occurred at 4:50 Thursday evening in Texas County on Highway 32 about two miles west of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, 46-year old Valerie Taylor of Licking lost control of her 1995 Ford and ran off the road, struck a driveway and then struck some trees. Taylor suffered serious injuries and was transported to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis by Air Evac. The Ford was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by A1 Wrecker of Houston

Troop I, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded three traffic fatalities during the month of August 2007. This is the same as August 2006. The total fatalities for 2007, as of the end of August, are 40 compared to 30 for the same time period last year. In Crawford County there were 32 accidents reported with 15 injuries, Dent County reported 16 accidents with four injuries, Laclede County reported 58 accidents with 33 injuries and two fatalities, Maries County reported 15 accidents with six injuries reported, Phelps County reported 63 accidents with 37 injuries, and in Pulaski County, there were 44 accidents with 19 injuries and one fatality reported for August. Captain Randy Becker, Commanding Officer of Troop I Headquarters of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, wants to remind everyone that inattention, speeding and drinking are some of the major contributing circumstances for our traffic crashes in Missouri. Everyone needs to adjust their speed to road and weather conditions and to the amount of traffic present. Don’t drink and drive and don’t get into a vehicle with someone who has been drinking.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers continued their fine play as they defeated the Lady Eagles of Mountain View-Liberty in three games to go to 10-4-1 on the year and 4-0 in the SCA. Salem won 25-8, lost 10-25 and won 25-15. The JV also won in tow games. The Lady Tigers will travel to Lebanon on Tuesday night.

The Salem Football Tigers look for their first win tonight as they will host the winless Houston Tigers in SCA play at 7:00 at the Salem High School Football Field. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will participate in the Rolla Tournament tomorrow in Rolla.

Joel Pineiro threw eight spectacular innings as the St. Louis Cardinals might have again spoiled a season for the New York Mets with a 3-0 win at Shea Stadium. In a makeup of a June 28th rain out, Pineiro (7-5) allowed just three hits, struck out six and walked just one for the Cardinals, who will end their season with a three-game set at Pittsburgh this weekend. Albert Pujols had two hits, drove in a run and scored for St. Louis, which defeated New York in seven games in the National League Championship Series a year ago, spoiling what had been a great season for the Mets. Pineiro set down the final 10 batters he faced and Jason Isringhausen worked a 1-2-3 ninth to secure his 31st save of the season. The Cards will finish up their season in Pittsburgh this weekend.

Lance Broadway tossed a two-hitter over six scoreless innings in his first major-league start, as the Chicago White Sox blanked the Kansas City Royals, 10-0, in the finale of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. Broadway (1-1), who had pitched three times in relief for the White Sox since arriving earlier this month, struck out eight batters and walked two before Matt Thornton and Bobby Jenks finished the shutout. Esteban German, Ross Gload and Alex Gordon posted the only three hits for the Royals, who have dropped four of five. Billy Buckner (1-2) took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts over six innings for Kansas City. The Royals host the Cleveland Indians to wrap up their season.

The Missouri Football Tigers have the week off before facing Nebraska next Saturday.

Funeral services for Chester Lewis “Scott” Wilson of St James, age 31, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Nicklaus Wilson Savings Fund at any Phelps County Bank.

Funeral services for Gene Smith of Lothian, MO, formerly of Bunker, age 67, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Davis Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
