The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular meeting Tuesday evening at the hospital library. For the month of August, the hospital showed an excess of revenues over expenses of $176,196, and for the first two months of the fiscal year the hospital has had an excess of revenues over expenses of over $67,000. That number is $133,000 below budget. Over the month, the hospital did see an increase in available cash of $157,324 and did renew four CD’s. In the Director of Nursing report for the month of August, there were 789 emergency room visits with 53 transfers, 159 ambulance runs with 162 patients being assessed, 29 surgery cases, 1740 outpatient registrations, 163 Home Health visits, 8439 lab tests, 1,106 radiological procedures, 204 CT scans, 26 MRI scans, 19 nuclear med scans, 1,825 cardiopulmonary procedures, 483 rehab treatments, 227 dialysis treatments and 367 clinical visits. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor stated that the hospital auxiliary has planned the Scrubs and Beyond Fundraiser for October 18th at the hospital library, and the Masquerade Jewelry sale for November 12th and 13th at the Dent County Fire Station. He then discussed the Missouri Hospital Association Environmental Assessment that each hospital should review and see if they are addressing the needs of their community. Pryor said that work on the sanitation lagoon should begin the first week of October before the board approved active staff privileges forVicky Gulley, D.O. Assistant Administrator Kasey Lucas stated that he attended the conference in Chicago with three other hospital department heads for the CPSI conference. Kathy Wheldon of the Lab Department made a presentation to the group on the upcoming new medical identifying codes that will be used in the second phase of the Electronic Medical Conversion. Lucas said that the MEDHOST is still not where it is supposed to be, but they are still working on it. Pryor said that there were 335 people who participated in the September Health Clinics, up from 291 people last year. For the year, 965 people utilized the health clinics this year and this is up from 741 people who used them last year. For the month, Pryor reported that 34 people used the tele-health services at the hospital and that Carol Lacy will hold a Community Health Needs Assessment on Friday. The board approved a by-laws change of review time from 30 days to 15 days, and approved changing the organizational chart to include medical records, corporate compliance and QA under the Assistant Administrator, and also include the addition of the SMDH Center for Family Health. These by-laws will have to be read for the second time at the next meeting. The board approved changing the by-law concerning dissolution after the second reading that allows them not to have to file IRS Form 990 and save the hospital about $9,500 per year by a 3-1 vote with Ray Bruno voting against the change. The board approved changing the next meeting date to October 23rd at 6:00 to accommodate the auditors. The board then approved a number of budget revisions that became necessary because of the opening of the SMDH Center for Family Health including an increase in patient revenue of $1,088,500 and an excess of revenues over expenses of $89,351. Capital Budget additions due to the opening of the office are calculated at being $60,000, 2/3rds of which is comprised of software and licenses. The board approved the budgeted purchase of a Pharmacy refrigerator to store vaccines for children and other drugs for $6,196, and another $6,000 for the Pharmacy for a temperature monitoring system from SensoScientific called Wi-Fi Amernet. The board also approved the non-budgeted purchase of an air conditioning unit for Room #115 from Hoffman Supply for $880. The board then went into closed session.
In partnership with the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center, the Ozark National Scenic Riverways will bring the traveling exhibit “Lincoln: The Constitution and The Civil War” to Salem one of the park’s gateway communities. The Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center was approached and agreed to house the exhibition for the park. The exhibit “Lincoln: The Constitution and The Civil War” is free and open for public viewing, October 1st through November 10th, at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Center located at 202 South Main Street in Salem. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. More viewing times and group visits are available by appointment. From Salem, the exhibit travels to the White House Visitor Center in Washington D.C., one of its many stops during the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Bud Norris snapped a lengthy losing streak and the Houston Astros took a 2-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The loss leaves St. Louis with a 3 ½ game lead for the final wild card spot in the National League with six games left to play. Chris Carpenter, making just his second start of the season, gave up two runs on four hits over six innings. The Cardinals have the day off.
Pinch-runner Don Kelly scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, helping the Detroit Tigers sneak past the Kansas City Royals, 5-4, in the third test of a four-game series. Jeff Francoeur hit a solo homer for the Royals, who have dropped four straight. David Lough, Alex Gordon and Billy Butler added an RBI apiece. Kansas City starter Jeremy Guthrie allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings. Kelvin Herrera (4-3) gave up one run on two hits in the eighth to take the loss. The Royals and Tigers finish up their series tonight.

Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Salem.
Funeral services for Darlene Henry Cook of Rolla, age 52, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Greentree Christian Church in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the family of Darlene Henry Cook. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Bryan Hawkins Maddox of Salem, age 78, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Miner Cemetery.
