The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5170, 5270, 5600 and 6090, that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2400 and that rock would be added to county road 6200. He also said that repairs were being made to various chip and seal roads, and that repair work is being done on county dump truck #115. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson indicated that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2390, 4283, 4285 and 4287. Larson reported that materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2380 and 3090, and that brush would be cut on county road 4330. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he would be attending a Central Region Workforce Investment Board meeting on Wednesday in Jefferson City. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind people that voter ID cards have been sent out. If you receive your card and it is incorrect, please use the back side to correct the card and mail it back in or bring it to the clerk’s office in the courthouse. The Commission then discussed a Memorandum of Understanding from the MRPC concerning a Consortium for Rural Regions Plan Integration for Sustainable Development. This consortium would be funded by a grant from HUD, the EPA and U.S. Department of Transportation. This issue was added to the August MRPC Consent Agenda at the meeting and was approved without member discussion. According to Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles, the terms “sustainable development” and “sustainable community“ mean the same thing and are tools of the United Nation’s Agenda 21 to help reach their goals. Skiles went on to say that this issue was also brought up at an MCEC Board meeting at the end of that meeting without being put on the agenda and was pushed through by a vote of 4-2 without much discussion. The memorandum of understanding was to be signed and returned by Wednesday, September 28^th. The commissioners voted 3-0 NOT to sign the MOU and also to allow Skiles to write a letter to MRPC Director Bonnie Prigge concerning the process by which the MRPC is trying to advance this issue without open discussion by any of the members of the MRPC. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital regular board meeting was held Thursday evening in the Hospital Library where Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor was honored for 25 years of service to the hospital. He told the board that the assessed valuation in Iron County for Doe Run was changed and so the totaled assessed valuation for the hospital district went from $243,935,127 to 225,729,529. The tax levy rate also changes from $.195 per $100 assessed valuation to $.1902 per $100 assessed valuation changing the tax income from $475,673 to $446,776. In the summary of operations for August, the hospital showed operating revenues over expenses of $77,655 and $81,060 after tax revenues. In the nurse’s report for August, there were 845 emergency room visits with a turnaround time of 128 minutes. There were 163 ambulance runs with 162 patients being assessed, 20 surgery cases, 185 home health visits, 8,380 lab tests, 1,017 radiological procedures, 201 CT scans, 25 MRI scans, 10 nuclear med scans, 630 rehab treatments, 211 dialysis treatments and 429 clinical visits. In the Chief of Staff’s report, Pryor reported that the medical staff approved and recommended courtesy staff privileges for Brian Kriete, MD and the hospital board approved that recommendation. Pryor said that the hospital auxiliary would have a “Books are Fun” fundraiser on Tuesday before providing the board with updates on the federal legislation. In the construction update, Pryor said that the patient waiting area was almost completed, that work is still continuing in the administrative area, and that the Long-Term Care Expansion new floors have been poured with the outside walls erected. Pryor gave the board a report on the Rural Care Physicians status in rural Missouri against metropolitan Missouri. In the metropolitan area, there are 12,379 licensed physicians while there are only 1,646 licensed physicians in rural Missouri with 55% of those physicians 50 years of age or older. He reported that there were 291 participants at the last health screening held September 7^th and 8^th. In the annual bylaw review, it was suggested that the hospital board meetings be held on the Tuesday after the third Monday and the board approved the recommendation. They will have to wait until the November meeting to adopt the by-law.  The board approved the budgeted purchase of two laser jet printers for Acute Care and ER for $1,173, and a laser jet printer for information systems for $324, all from PC Connection. They also approved the non-budgeted purchase of a wide wheelchair for the surgery department from Medline for $282, and an air purifier for Long-Term Care from Goss and Associates for $999. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers beat St. Clair Monday, 21-11 as Samantha Parker hit a homer for Salem. The Lady Tigers are 16-6 on the year. The JV also won, 8-2. The Lady Tigers will be at Union Thursday afternoon.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at Cabool tonight starting at 6:00. The Lady Tigers are still looking for their first win of the year.

The Houston Astros played spoiler Monday, denying the St. Louis Cardinals a chance at pulling even in the NL wild card race with a 5-4 win in 10 innings. Lance Berkman had a two-run double for St. Louis who still trail Atlanta by one game. The Cards and Astros play again tonight at 6:30 on KSMO.

Salvador Perez collected two hits and drove in two runs as Kansas City downed Minnesota, 7-3. Mike Moustakas homered, while Billy Butler and Alcides Escobar both recorded a pair of hits and an RBI for the Royals, who have won three of their last four. Felipe Paulino (4-6) worked six innings for the win, allowing six hits and three runs with nine strikeouts.

Funeral services for Bernadine L. Davis of St. Peters, formerly of Salem, age 84, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem.

Graveside services for Jerry D. Wallace of Branson, formerly of Doolittle, age 58, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the MS Institute at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.

A Celebration of Life for Sarah Dawn Cotner, age 23, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sarah Cotner Family.

Joseph W. Thompson of Bunker, age 89, passed away Tuesday, September 27^th at the age of 89 at the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 30^th at 3 P.M. McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be Thursday, September 29^th 5 to 8 P.M. McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Chatman Cemetery near Bunker.
