The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening in the hospital library. Stephanie Wofford presented the summary of operations for the month of August. There were 1,788 outpatients registered during the month with 839 people using the emergency room. The hospital showed an excess of expenses over revenues of $76,342 with $3.6 million in CD’s. Carol Lacy gave the director of nursing report and there were 206 ambulance runs with 196 patients assessed, 28 surgery cases, 243 Home Health visits, 8,493 lab tests, 1,122 radiological procedures, 276 CT scans, 30 MRI scans, 12 nuclear med scans, 387 rehab treatments, 230 dialysis treatments and 385 clinical visits. Administrator Dennis Pryor gave the Auxiliary report. Upcoming fundraisers include a Masquerade Jewelry sale on November 8^th and 9^th at the Dent County Fire Department and the Holiday Home Tour on December 5^th. Pryor and board member Joe Brand recently attended Washington D.C. MHA Legislative visits and met with Representative JoAnn Emerson, Senator Kit Bond and Senator Claire McCaskill’s aide. Pryor then presented the Chief of Staff’s report. The medical staff recommended and the board approved courtesy staff privileges for four Telemedicine Physicians from the University of Missouri. The board reviewed the new electronic medical record timeline. Pryor reported that the 2010 Wellness Screening was a success with a total of 630 individual screenings conducted. Pryor then discussed the hospital lagoon situation and reported that Krehbiel Engineering recommended that the hospital needed six acres and Seville Care Center needed 29 acres for a lagoon. Board President Judy Thompson appointed Dennis Fiebelman as Chairman of the Finance Committee with Joe Hayes and A.J. Seay to serve on this committee. The board approved the budgeted purchase of three Tablet PC’s for the emergency room for $7,953 from CompUSA; 18 computers, 17 monitors and 20 UPS backups for Information Systems for $24,452 from Automated Business Systems; a managed wireless connectivity for the hospital campus for $31,613 from Applied, a commercial mixer for Dietary for $548 from US Food Service and a refrigeration unit for Dietary for $7,724 from US Food Service. The board then went into closed session.

An accident happened Wednesday morning at 9:22 in Reynolds County on Route A in the city of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, 36-year old Lorreta A. Cowan of Bunker was driving a 1990 GMC 1500 pickup eastbound when she pulled into the path of a 1993 Chevy S-10 driven westbound by 64-year old Odie R. Brickey of Bunker. Cowan and Brickey suffered minor injuries in the accident as did a passenger in the Chevy S-10: 55-year old Gary Black of Rolla. All three were taken by the Reynolds County Ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for treatment. The GMC sustained moderate damage and was removed by the owner. The Chevy S-10 also had moderate damages and was left at the scene. Everyone involved was wearing safety restraints.

An accident occurred at 3:05 Friday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 19 about four miles south of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol, a 2004 Chevrolet pickup driven by 46-year old Gene Weikel of Salem attempted to make a left turn and turned into the path of a 1987 Chevrolet pickup driven by 45-year old Wade Sisco of Salem, and contact was made. Sisco suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Weikel was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Both pickups sustained extensive damage and were removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

Local historian Ken Fiebelman’s Volume 7 of the Ozark Heritage History Book, Sesquicentennial Pictorial Edition, was recently released. The book features 3800 photographs and stories never used in previous books. The price is $106.75 by check or money order, and layaways are also available, if it is more convenient. Kevin Presley scored two touchdowns while Ryan Smith rushed for 134 yards and a score as the Salem Tigers beat the Mountain Grove Panthers, 34-7. Salem improves to 3-2 on the year and in the SCA. They will host Ava this Friday night for their homecoming game starting at 7:00.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers defeated the Mountain Grove Lady Panthers Friday by the score of 12-1. Salem out hit Mountain Grove 9-3 to improve to 10-8 on the year. The Lady Tigers will host St. Clair today at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Fields and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

The Salem 7^th Grade Football Tigers played to a 0-0 tie with Mountain Grove Thursday while the 8^th graders lost to the Panthers, 14-12. Both touchdowns came from Justin Appleberry.

Five different players rushed for touchdowns for Missouri, as the Tigers demolished the Miami-Ohio Red Hawks, 51-13, in a non-league affair at Faurot Field. The Tigers (4-0) finished with 236 rushing yards and were led by Kendial Lawrence's 63 yards. Blaine Gabbert threw for 187 yards and one touchdown in the win. Mizzou has the week off before starting Big 12 play on October 9th as they will host Colorado.

Matt Cassel threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns, as the Kansas City Chiefs routed the San Francisco 49ers, 31-10. Thomas Jones ran for 95 yards and a touchdown for the Chiefs (3-0). Jamaal Charles added 97 rushing yards, while Dexter McCluster finished with three catches for 69 yards and a score. Cassel completed 16- of-27 passes and was intercepted once.

Sam Bradford tossed a touchdown and picked up his first career win in the St. Louis Rams' 30-16 victory over the Washington Redskins in a Week 3 matchup. Bradford, the top overall pick in this year's draft, went 23-for-37 with 235 yards and an interception for the Rams (1-2). Steven Jackson had a 42-yard touchdown run, but left the game in the second quarter with a groin injury. Josh Brown connected on three field goals in the final quarter.

Albert Pujols slugged his National League- leading 42nd homer of the season, a three-run blast, and the Cardinals held off the Chicago Cubs, 8-7, after nearly blowing an eight-run lead. Matt Pagnozzi had two hits and three RBI for St. Louis. Jake Westbrook (3-4) allowed five hits and five runs over 5 1/3 innings, as the Cardinals stayed mathematically alive in the playoff race. The Cards start a three game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight at Busch Stadium at 6:55 on KSMO.

Michael Brantley capped a five-run eighth inning with a two-run double, as the Cleveland Indians came back to beat the Kansas City Royals, 5-3, at Progressive Field. Bruce Chen was denied the win despite throwing 6 2/3 scoreless frames. Robinson Tejeda (3-5) was dealt the loss for allowing all five runs in one inning of work. The Royals start a series with the Minnesota Twins tonight.

Funeral services for Susan Leona Smith of Platte City, Missouri, formerly of Rolla, age 67, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Wednesday night. No Interment was indicated.
