At the Salem High School Netcoming held before the Salem Lady Tiger Volleyball game with the Thayer Lady Bobcats Tuesday night, senior Luke Heithold was crowned the Netcoming King. Heithold was escorted by varsity volleyball player Hannah Kettner. The remainder of the court included seniors Ryan Thompson and Zachary Moser, junior Brandon Plank, and sophomore Andy Kissir. They were escorted by varsity players Kirsten Stephens, Ellie Nothaus, Tessa Piatt and Allison Jones.

An accident occurred Monday afternoon at 3:50 at the intersection of Highway 32 and MacArthur in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a red 1993 Oldsmobile driven by 20-year old Kristen Chappell of Salem, a gray 2004 Jeep Liberty driven by 39-year old Penny Watson of Cook Station and a maroon 1999 Ford Explorer driven by Becky Land of Salem were eastbound on Highway 32 approaching MacArthur. The Jeep and the Ford were slowing to stop for a red traffic light when the Oldsmobile started skidding and sliding. The Oldsmobile made contact with the Jeep and due to the impact the Jeep made contact with the Ford. Chappell sustained minor injuries and was transported by private means to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Watson and a passenger, 18-year old William Rutz, suffered minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Oldsmobile sustained moderate damage and was towed by Whitakers Towing. The Jeep sustained moderate damage and the Ford sustained minor damage in the accident. They were both driven from the scene by the vehicle owners.

Captain Luke Vislay, director of the Division of Drug and Crime Control, announces the results of joint undercover narcotics investigation involving the South Central Drug Task Force, Rolla Police Department, United States Forest Service, Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Over the course of approximately seven months, undercover operatives with South Central Drug Task Force were able to conduct a series of covert narcotics investigations involving the distribution/sales of methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy, and prescription medication. The investigation involved 26 loosely affiliated individuals in and around the Phelps County, Missouri, area and arrest warrants for each defendant were obtained through the Phelps County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office prior to the mass arrest operation. At 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 26, members of South Central Drug Task Force, in coordination with Rolla Police Department, United States Forest Service, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, began the early morning round up. A total of 18 individuals were arrested in connection with this investigation, those arrested were transported,  processed, and held at the Phelps County Jail for  bond. Arrested were 25-year old Joel S. Anderson, 22-year old Ashley Bagnell, 29-year old Nathaniel H. Bailey, 22-year old Heath A. Barrack, 19-year old Brandon L. Cabais, 27-year old Ian N. Denaro, 27-year old Margie L. Firestine, 31-year old Crystal D. Graham, 19-year old Kathi L. Hayes, 23-year old William E. Henderson, 18-year old Thomas A. Maerz, 21-year old Brian D. Rutledge, 29-year old Jay A. Sandifer, 21-year old Shane M. Stubblefield, 64-year old William F. Stubblefield, 30-year old Allen D. Vaughn, 36-year old Renetha R. Wells, and 35-year old Maurice Young, all of Rolla. Law enforcement officials are currently seeking the remaining eight suspects. It is through the cooperative efforts of all agencies involved that this investigation was brought to a successful conclusion. 

U. S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced that her staff would visit with constituents throughout the 8th District at Congressional Connection stops. Emerson’s staff will be at the Licking City Hall this morning from 9:30 to 10:30. The connection will then travel to Salem and will be in town from 1:00 to 2:00 this afternoon at the Salem Chamber of Commerce. The Congressional Connections are open to everyone. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will travel to Mountain View tonight to face the Liberty Lady Eagles in an SCA tilt. The JV contest will begin at 6:00 followed by the varsity match. Salem’s varsity enters the game with a 9-4-1 record and they are 3-0 in the SCA.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will travel to Union today to face the Lady Bobcats starting today at 4:30.

Albert Pujols homered for his 100th run batted in this season and Ryan Ludwick doubled home the go-ahead run in the third inning, as the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-3, to prevent getting swept in their three-game series at Miller Park. Aaron Miles finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals, who have won three of five. Brad Thompson (8-6), who defeated Houston on Saturday, allowed two unearned runs and five hits with three walks and three strikeouts over six innings for St. Louis. Pujols, recovering from a strained left calf muscle, became the first player in history to hit at least 30 homers and drive in 100 runs in his first seven seasons. The Cardinal play a makeup game tonight in New York that starts at 6:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Jim Thome hit the 505th home run of his career and Jon Garland threw his first shutout of the season as the Chicago White Sox blanked the Kansas City Royals, 3-0, in the second of a three-game series from U.S. Cellular Field. Jermaine Dye belted a two-run homer for the White Sox, who moved out of the AL Central basement with the win. David DeJesus, Mark Grudzielanek and Mark Teahen accounted for the three total hits by the Royals, who have dropped three of four and now call the AL Central cellar home. Kansas City starter Zack Greinke (7-7) went five frames, allowing three runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out six. The White Sox and Royals will play again tonight in Chicago.

Pavol Demitra, Mark Parrish and Brian Rolston each scored two goals as the Minnesota Wild blanked the St. Louis Blues, 7-0, in preseason action. Blues goaltender Manny Legace gave up the seven goals on 33 shots. St. Louis sat most of its starters in this game for one last look at some rookies. The Blues will face the Minnesota Wild again Friday night in pre-season play at 7:30.

Funeral services for Chester Lewis “Scott” Wilson of St James, age 31, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Nicklaus Wilson Savings Fund at any Phelps County Bank.
