The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6040, 6020, 5690 and 5080. Purcell went on to say that brush would be cut on county road 5105 and that asphalt was being laid on some spots on county road 4110 in order to avoid a problem in the future. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4400 and 4403. Larson went on to say that brush would be cut on county road 6160 and that he was working with a short crew. Larson added that some of the pilings have been driven and concrete is being poured around them for the bridge on county road 3210. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that on Wednesday he had attended the Central Region Workforce Investment Board meeting in Jefferson City. During the meeting the Board reviewed the Work Force Innovation and Opportunity Act and various changes it makes. Skiles noted that the traffic at the Career Centers has slowed some. Skiles also said he went by the Department of Natural Resources where he had a good discussion with Mark Miles in the Historical Preservation Division. Their discussion centered on possible grants to assist with window replacement in the Dent County Courthouse. Deputy County Clerk Crystal Pilkington reported for Dent County Clerk Angie Curley who was in clerks’ training in Jefferson City. Pilkington stated that absentee voting has started and that the deadline to register to vote in the general election is October 8th. Pilkington went on to say that voters who have had name or address changes need to come by the clerk’s office to update their voter records. The next regular meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 in the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred Thursday morning at about 10:20 in Crawford County on Highway 19 five miles south of Cherryville. According to the Highway Patrol Report, a 2009 Harley Davidson, driven by 60-year old Kurt K. Kotraba of St. Charles, failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the right side of the roadway where it overturned. Kotraba sustained minor injuries and will seek medical treatment at a later time.

The Salem Police Department released more of their reports. On September 16th at 5:57 in the evening, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 500 block of North Jackson in reference to an intoxicated male causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the premises. The investigation led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 4:30 that afternoon, an officer made contact with a 27-year old Salem female who had an active warrant from the City of Salem. She was taken into custody and incarcerated pending a court appearance. At 6:35 that evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1300 block of Jennifer in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that someone entered a residence through a window and took a television set, an XBox 360, a Wii game system and other items all valued at $1,250. At 11:10 that night officer responded back to the 500 block on North Jackson in reference to an intoxicated male causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the premises. The investigation led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, September 27th aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. The Salem Police Department located at 500 North Jackson and the Dent County Sheriff’s Office located at 112 East 5th Street will be participating this Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers rallied in the bottom of the 7th inning for six runs with the help of four Lady Bobcat errors and defeated the Thayer Lady Bobcats by the score of 7-6. The win propelled the Tigers to a 10-2 record and 4-0 in the SCA. Payton Curley went 3-3 and was on base four times, scored a run and drove in a run. The Lady Tigers are off today before going to Van Buren for two games on Saturday.

The Salem Lady Tiger Volleyball team lost to St. Clair in two sets on Monday, 14-25 and 17-25. Breanna Piatt finished with three kills while Amelia McGuirk and Morgan Hailey added two kills each. The Lady Tigers then traveled to Ava on Tuesday to face the Lady Bears. Salem again lost in two sets, 5-25 and 10-25. Piatt had two kills in defeat. The Lady Tigers will host Bunker on Monday.

The Salem Tiger football team will be in Willow Springs tonight to play the Bears at 7:00. Salem is 2-3 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com starting with Tiger Talk at around 6:30.

The St. Louis Cardinals were off yesterday, but will be in Arizona tonight to wrap up the regular season with a three-game series with the Diamondbacks at 8:40. The Cardinals are 88-71 and have a one game lead over the Pirates in the NL Central. The Cards magic number is 3. KSMO will join this game in progress following the Salem game.

Eric Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI and the Kansas City Royals picked up another crucial win with a 6-3 takedown of the Chicago White Sox from U.S. Cellular Field. The two teams will play again tonight.

The Missouri Tiger football team will be South Carolina on Saturday to face the 13th ranked Gamecocks in SEC play. Missouri is 3-1 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 5:00.

Graveside services for Carl Hertfelder Jr. of St. James, age 85, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in St. James. Visitation will be this morning from 10:00 until time of service at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Lewis Edwards of Salem, age 67, will be held today at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

Memorial services for Donald S. Presson of St. James, age 84, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Pentecostal Church in Vichy. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Earlene Beck of Steelville, age 76, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Steelville Ambulance District.

Funeral services for Donna Hayes of Bunker, age 78, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Bunker 1st Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 tonight at McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Crossville Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the Donna Hayes Memorial Fund.

Funeral services for Rose Ellen Coleman of Lenox, age 70, will be held Monday at 12:00 at the Anutt Full Gospel Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Enke Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Jesse Westerman of Salem, age 84, will be Monday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Internment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery with full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to Saving Sight.
