At the Board of Aldermen meeting Monday night, City Administrator Clayton Lucas stated that a power outage would occur this tonight at midnight on the east side of town along Highway 32. Areas affected for about 15 minutes at midnight would include areas from Highway 32-72 and 19’s junction north on Highway 19 to Center Street, from Center to Carty Street and then south to Highway 32-72. Areas south of the intersection affected will be from Highway 19 South to Truman Avenue and then east to Babb Lane. Work is being done on a new pole that is being installed on Highway 32-72 East, so the Masters Industrial Park as well as businesses along Babb Lane up to Crowleys will be off about five hours. Once the replacement has been made, power again will go off about 15 minutes in the areas before being fully restored. The City of Salem apologizes for any inconvenience to those affected and appreciates your patience while the repairs are being made.

A Special Meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman will be conducted, called by Mayor Gary Brown, this morning at the City Administrative Offices, located at 400 North Iron beginning at 8:30 am. The Board will open up the meeting to discuss police car bids and before voting to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The Special Meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Wiley Bailey, National FFA Southern Region Vice President, spoke to and entertained over 125 FFA members Tuesday morning in the SHS High School Agriculture Education metals shop.  Bailey, a native of Sand Rock, Alabama, used his easy southern drawl and personal stories to entertain and teach the FFA members important life lessons. He told about a high school acquaintance that was a special needs student named Elias. Bailey didn’t pay much attention to Elias during his high school years. Then while a freshman at Auburn University he learned that his brother Cliff and Elias spoke on the phone two or three times each week. He asked Cliff why! Cliff’s response was “Elias needs my help.” Bailey had walked by Elias time and time again, but his brother Cliff did not. Wiley said, “I learned from that experience and others that you never know how far a little help will go.”  At the end of Bailey’s remarks FFA Advisor Heather Johnson asked if the members had questions and there were many. When asked if he grew up on a farm he told that he had and that they raised Angus Cattle and Broiler Chickens on contract for Tyson Foods. He added that his FFA Supervised Agriculture Experience was raising watermelons, vegetable crops and Angus Cattle.  Bailey was asked if his family was active in church. He said they were and even had their own gospel group, “The Baileys”, and the group would play for nursing homes, church groups, etc., about 100 times a year when he was in high school. At the end of Bailey’s term of office, which will end November 1^st at the 86^th National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, he will have spoken to over 400,000 people, traveled to at least 38 states and logged over 100,000 miles. Bailey, who is majoring in Agricultural Communications, has the goal to be a motivational speaker.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Office released their reports for a couple of structure fires. On Saturday, September 21^st, deputies responded to the 4100 block of County Road 6150 for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, deputies confirmed that the residence was fully involved. After confirming that no one was in the residence, deputies secured the premises until Dent County Fire Protection District arrived on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Dent County Fire Protection District. On Monday, September 23^rd, deputies responded to the 23000 block of East Highway 32 for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a 28-year old Boss female was the reported victim. She was not home at the time of the fire, but provided information to deputies. It is believed that this incident is a case of Arson and the State Fire Marshal has been notified. The investigation is ongoing.

Mark Twain National Forest will offer a fee free weekend for National Public Lands Day and National Tribal Lands Day Friday, September 27^th through Sunday, September 29^th. National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer weekend to improve and enhance public lands Americans enjoy. No fees will be charged for camping in non-reserved sites at areas operated by Mark Twain National Forest on Friday and Saturday night, September 27^th and 28^th. Normal fees still apply to reserved sites, those operated by concessionaires and for use of motorized trails. For more information about National Public Lands Day, go to: www.publiclandsday.org.
