An accident happened at 2:10 early Friday morning in Crawford County on Highway 19 about one and a half miles south of Cuba. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Saturn driven by 47-year old Linda Cunningham of Rolla was traveling southbound on Highway 19, traveled off the right side of the road and struck several trees. Cunningham suffered serious injuries and was transported by the North Crawford County ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Saturn was totaled and removed from the scene by Brad’s Towing.

An accident occurred at 8:05 Saturday morning in Iron County on Highway 32 about four miles west of Bixby. According to the highway patrol report, a 1985 Toyota driven by 33-year old Kenneth Brakefield of Steelville, ran off the roadway, overcorrected, then ran off the left side of the roadway, and struck a tree. Brakefield suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by ambulance. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Toyota was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Abney’s Towing.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital regular board meeting was held Thursday evening in the Hospital Library and began with the audit report from Eddie Marmouget from B K & D. Marmouget said that it was tougher year than 2010 for the hospital as cash is down almost $700,000 from 2010, but that the hospital is due $550,000 from Medicare for audit adjustments. Last year, the hospital owed Medicare after audit adjustments $450,000. He said that the long-term debt for the hospital increased about $400,000 to 1.375 million dollars but that is still very low for the hospital. Marmouget stated that the new patient service revenue increased to 17.4 million dollars, but that also included funds from the addition of the Family Medical Clinic. He said that the increase in administrative service expenses was due to an increase in mostly employee benefits, and that the hospital recognized about $450,000 in bad debts and charity services. Overall the hospital showed an excess of expenses over revenues from operations of $428,105, and an excess of revenues over expenses after taxes of $10,194. Marmouget said that there were no material weaknesses with the hospital books and that the segregation of accounting duties for the hospital and rural health clinics continues to occur, but that will happen with small staffs and the overlapping of duties. Marmouget said that the hospital has 45 days of revenue in cash reserves which is less than the rural hospital average of 51 days, and that the days in accounts receivable is also 45 days which is lower that the average for rural hospital in 2010 of 50 days. He said that the hospital has about 90% of their funds tied to federal funds and has a current ratio of 3.3:1 where the rural Missouri hospital average is about 2.3:1. Marmouget said that the Salem Hospital is still a great value with gross revenue of $7,980 per adjusted discharges with expenses of only about $4,174 per adjusted discharge. This is almost 50% less than the rural Missouri hospital average of $14,314 for gross revenue and $8,482 in gross expenses. Overall, Marmouget said the hospital’s financial situation is very good and he wanted to thank Controller Stephanie Wofford and her staff for their assistance in preparing the audit.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers blasted Mountain Grove Friday afternoon at the Salem City Park in five innings, 16-4; and the JV also won 7-3. The Lady Tigers then participated in the Richland Tournament on Saturday and destroyed Plato, 20-2 in five innings; crushed Richland, 21-5 in five innings; but lost to Newburg, 7-5. Salem took second in the tournament and have an overall record of 15-6 as they will be at St. Clair today for a non-conference game at 4:30.

The Mountain Grove Panthers blocked an extra point in the 4^th quarter and then watched a Braxton Parker field goal attempt with 15 seconds left sail wide right as they held on to beat Salem, 7-6. Johnny Boyd scored the only touchdown for Salem and finished with 100 yards 12 carries. Salem is now 2-3 on the year and in the SCA and will be at Ava Friday night.

Rafael Furcal's leadoff home run in the eighth inning gave St. Louis a 3-2 win over Chicago as the Cardinals moved closer to the wild card spot. Yadier Molina also homered for Cards who trail Atlanta by just one game going into their final series of the season. Octavio Dotel (3-2) got the final two outs of the eighth inning to pick up the win while Edwin Jackson went seven innings in the start and was touched for two runs on five hits for the Cardinals. Jason Motte set the Cubs down in order in the 9^th inning for the save. The Red Birds will be in Houston tonight at 6:30 on KSMO.

Jarrod Dyson's two-run double was all the offense the Royals needed to take a 2-1 victory over the White Sox in the rubber match of a three-game series. Luis Mendoza (2-0) pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks as Kansas City won for the 10th time in 13 games. Greg Holland got the save for the Royals will finish the season against Minnesota.

Joe Flacco completed 27-of-48 passes for 389 yards including three TD passes to Torrey Smith in the first quarter as Baltimore blasted the St. Louis Rams, 37-7. Sam Bradford connected on half of his 32 pass attempts for 166 yards with a TD and an interception for the Rams who gave up 553 yards as they fall to 0-3 on the year.

Ryan Mathews ran for 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns, as the Chargers held on for a 20-17 victory over the struggling Chiefs. Matt Cassel threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns for KC who falls to 0-3 on the year.

Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles hooked up for three touchdowns, and top-ranked Oklahoma overcame a slow start to top Missouri, 38-28, in the Big 12 opener for both programs. James Franklin led Missouri (2-2, 0-1) with 291 yards and one touchdown on 16- of-33 throws, while adding 103 yards and two scores on the ground. Missouri have the week off before going to Kansas State.

Funeral services for Bernadine L. Davis of St. Peters, formerly of Salem, age 84, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday night from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem.

Graveside services for Jerry D. Wallace of Branson, formerly of Doolittle, age 58, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the MS Institute at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.

Funeral services for Sarah Connell Cotner are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.
