The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5110, 5130, 5550, 5690, 6283 and 6287; and material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 4160, 5130 and 5510. Simpson also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 4080 and 6470; and the COPIC workers would be removing trees from roadways. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 4270 and 4280; and a crew would be on Dent County Roads 2200 and 2370 removing debris from bridges. Tune also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3255; and he wanted to let everyone know that the Dry Fork Bridge on Dent County Road 2240 is still closed and will not be re-opened until next week. The bridge has been widened and a new concrete slab has been poured on top of the bridge. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Meramec Regional Planning Commission Meeting on Tuesday in St. James and he also attended the final Rural Addressing Training Meeting on Wednesday. Skiles said that he recommends anyone who has any questions about their new physical address to call 1-800-238-1911. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that ballots are in for anyone who needs to absentee vote and the last day to register to vote for the November Election is October 8^th. Curley also said that sample ballots are available in the clerk’s office for anyone who would like to have one. Also at the meeting, the Commission read a letter from Anderson and Associates, who inspected the Judicial Annex building for environmental hazards. The letter stated that no apparent environmental hazards were found and the Commission plans on opening bids up for the remodeling of the building in the near future. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Research on forage, beef and agro-forestry to be highlighted at Wurdack Farm field day on Friday, October 3^rd. Tours will include a demonstration of harvesting timber with a mule team. John Dwyer, will discuss his research on shortleaf pine during the annual field day at MU’s Wurdack Farm in Cook Station in Crawford County. Other topics on the timber/agro-forestry tour will include an update on thinned timber stands and light penetration by MU forestry research specialist Dusty Walter, and information about the emerald ash borer and jumping oak gall from Simeon Wright, the coordinator of the MU Extension Plant Diagnostic Clinic, and MU Extension entomologist Wayne Bailey. Presentations scheduled for the beef/forage tour include post-weaning management of calves on grass by MU Extension beef nutritionist Justin Sexten, and hay quality and economics by MU Extension regional specialists Ted Cunningham and Will McClain. The field day begins with lunch at 11:30 a.m. followed at 12:30 p.m. by a round of introductory speakers, including Wurdack Farm superintendent John Poehlmann, who will provide an update on the construction of a conference and education facility at the farm with funding from the state’s Lewis & Clark Discovery Initiative. The special guest speaker is Don Steen, director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture. The event is free and open to the public. Do you have an old refrigerator or broken-down washer on the back porch or in the back yard? Do you have old tires beside the garage? Wondering what to do with that old computer? The MRPC, in partnership with the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and several local governments, will offer an electronics, appliance and waste tire collections in Salem on Saturday, October 18^th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Water Department Parking Lot located at Third and Grand Streets Salem. Appliances water heaters and other unwanted white goods charge. Fees will be charged for tire and televisions. Passenger tires will be $1.50 each; truck tires will be $5 each; and tractor tires will be $10 each. Televisions will be $10 each. You must unload the items yourself. These are one-time collections, so now is the time to take advantage of the opportunity.  MRPC is working with a scrap dealer in the region to properly handle appliances, and tires will be recycled into tire-derived fuel. A Springfield company will recycle electronics. The city of Salem and the Dent County Commission are assisting with the Dent County collection.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers fell to Richland Thursday by the score of 1306 to end their two game wining streak. The JV also took it on the chin dropping a 12-8 decision. The Lady Tigers will be off until Monday when they host St. Clair at the Salem City Park Field.

The Salem Football Tigers will travel to Willow Springs to face the Bears in SCA play. Salem is 2-1 in the SCA and 3-1 overall. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com starting at 6:20 with Tiger talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt.

Albert Pujols homered and drove in four runs as St. Louis routed Arizona, 12-3, and eliminated the Diamondbacks from playoff contention. The Arizona loss clinched the NL West title for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Pujols finished 3-for-3 and raised his average to .353 for the Cardinals, who were officially eliminated from postseason chase Tuesday and won for just the fifth time in 15 games. Ryan Ludwick also homered for St. Louis, which banged out 17 hits in the contest. Joel Pineiro (7-7) hurled seven solid innings, allowing three runs on just three hits while walking two and fanning seven to pick up the win. The Cardinals wrap up their season with three games against Cincinnati stating tonight. KSMO will join the game in progress after Salem Tiger Football. Saturday's game will be at 5:55 and Sunday's contest will be held at 12:55. You can hear those games on KSMO as well.

The Kansas City Royals could be spoilers as they will face the Minnesota Twins this final weekend of the season. Minnesota has overtaken the Chicago White Sox and lead the Central Division by 1/2 game.

St. Louis Blues have signed defenseman Mark Cundari.

In the NFL this week, the St. Louis Rams will face the Buffalo Bills, and the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Denver Broncos. Both Missouri teams are 0-3 on the year and their coach’s jobs may depend on the outcome of the games this weekend.
