An accident occurred Monday afternoon at 3:15 in Dent County on Dent County Road 337 about fifteen miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1993 Jeep Cherokee driven by 17-year old Nicholas Hager of Cook Station was rounding a curve, lost control and then traveled off the left side of the roadway striking a fence and a tree. A passenger 16-year old Taylar Boyer of Cook Station suffered serious injuries and was Air Evac’d to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Hager was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Jeep Cherokee sustained extensive damage and was towed by Al Brinkman Towing.
An accident happened at 3:45 Tuesday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 32 at Dent County Road 440 about 16 miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Chrysler driven by 18-year old Meika Barton of Voss was turning onto Highway 32 and turned into the path of a 2002 Dodge Stratus driven westbound by 29-year old Kevin Koob of Rolla. Barton suffered minor injuries and sought own treatment. Both vehicles sustained moderate damages. Whitakers Towing towed the 1998 Chrysler Sebring from the scene and C and C Towing removed the 2002 Dodge Stratus from the scene. They were both wearing a seat restraint at the time of accident.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving disorderly conduct, assaults and a fight. On September 13th at 12:58 in the morning, an officer was sent to the 1300 block of West Franklin in reference to a disturbance. The report led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was incarcerated and will issued a summons to appear in court upon his release. On September 14th at 11:54 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Salem High School in reference to an assault. The report revealed that a 16-year old Salem male juvenile had assaulted another 16-year old Salem male juvenile. Further investigation led to the detention of the suspect who will be referred to the juvenile officer. Later that evening at 8:52, an officer was detailed to the Salem High School parking lot in reference to a fight. The report led to the detention of a 17-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On September 17th at 11:10 in the morning, an officer was sent to the Salem Jr. High School in reference to an assault. The report revealed that a 15-year old Salem male juvenile had assaulted a 13-year old Salem male juvenile. He was detained and later released to his parents. The report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer. Later that evening at 6:33, an officer was dispatched to the 700 block of West International in reference to an assault. The report revealed that a 19-year old Salem female had assaulted a 20-year old Salem female. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released.
Missouri landowners interested in participating in the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) should apply by October 5th to be eligible for the next round of funding, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced. EQIP promotes agricultural production and environmental quality. Through EQIP, farmers and ranchers receive financial and technical assistance to help install structural conservation practices and to implement management systems that promote conservation. There are a few changes associated with this sign up. EQIP funds can be used to plant windbreaks for odor control around animal feeding operations, and can assist landowners with damage incurred during ice storms and spring flooding. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers improved to 9-4-1 on the year with a convincing win over the Thayer Lady Bobcats last night by the scores of 25-15 and 25-10. The Lady Tigers are 3-0 in SCA play and will face the Mountain View-Liberty Lady Eagles in a key SCA match on Thursday night. The JV will start things out with the varsity to match to follow.
Prince Fielder became the youngest player in major league history to hit 50 home runs in a season, clubbing a pair of long balls as Milwaukee moved closer in the National League Central race with a 9-1 victory over St. Louis at Miller Park. The Brewers victory coupled with Chicago's loss at Florida moved Milwaukee within two games in the division race. At 23 years old, Fielder hit home runs 49 and 50 to pass Willie Mayes as the youngest player in history to hit 50- plus homers. Jeff Suppan (11-12) recorded the victory after yielding just one run on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts over eight strong frames. Milwaukee won the first two games of this series to cut 1 1/2 games off the Cubs' division cushion. Braden Looper (12-12) took the loss, giving up seven runs on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout through five innings. Jim Edmonds drove in the only run for the Cardinals, losers in two straight and four of six. The Cards and Brewers wrap up their series tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
Tony Pena homered and matched a career-high with four hits as the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 9-5 in the opener of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. Ross Gload drove in two runs while Joey Gathright, Mark Teahen and Emil Brown had two hits apiece for the Royals, who had lost three of their previous four. Brandon Duckworth (3-5) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win. Kansas City starter Brian Bannister struggled mightily, allowing five runs on four hits in just 2/3 of an inning. The White Sox and Royals are now tied in last place in the AL Central. The two Royals and White Sox meet again tonight.
The St. Louis Blues will hold their final pre-season road game tonight as they will be in Minnesota to face the Wild. The Blues are 1-3 in the preseason. The Blues will be at home this weekend to face Minnesota and Chicago Friday night and Saturday night at the Scottrade Center.

Funeral services for Norma Jean Coleman of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, formerly of St. James, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Memorials may be made to the Southern Cemetery. Interment will be in the Southern Cemetery in rural St. James.
Funeral services for Chester Lewis “Scott” Wilson of St James, age 31, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Nicklaus Wilson Savings Fund at any Phelps County Bank.
