The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening at the District Administrative Offices Boardroom. After approval of the agenda, Superintendent Steve Carvajal updated the Board on numerous projects going on around the district. He said that the sign is now operational and the message center looks fantastic. He said tech support would be here next week with the last section of the sign to be installed in a couple of weeks. He stated that the new scorers table arrived for the gym and it showed up partially damaged. It was sent back and a new one would arrive in a couple of weeks. Bushes were tore out at William Lynch, picnic tables were put at the Upper Elementary and at the football field, trash had been picked up, weeds had been pulled on campus and work was being done on the white house. He said that 18 students took their SAT tests the first week it was offered. Carvajal then went on to report that 900 gallons of fuel had been stolen Wednesday night and that they were looking into ways to avoid this happening in the future. They were even considering a credit card process to avoid fuel being stolen. There was a presentation from the CIA-PLC leadership team for 8th through 12th grade Math. The Board then approved the A+ Partnership Plan with virtually no changes from last year, approved the bus routes and the board approved getting new playground equipment for the Upper Elementary. The new playground equipment would hold from 100 to 110 children at one time, be used for PE class as well as recess and should be in place by the end of October. In old business, the Board wanted to thank Timber Charcoal for their bid on two 8,000-gallon propane tanks and one 500-gallon propane tank for a total of $8,250. As the meeting was about to adjourn and go into Closed Session, Carvajal stated that a study had been conducted on both the Junior and Senior High buildings. Although the structures appeared to be okay with some electrical issues, there was a great concern over the air quality in those buildings. Carvajal stated that at the next meeting, more discussion would be given to that study and numerous ways would be explored such as either fixing the problems and adding on, or if a bond issue would need to come in play. The meeting was then adjourned and the Board then went in to closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel.
The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4080, 5600 and 6460, while brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5110. He said that a worker would be getting a load of oil from Springfield for the chip and seal road repairs to be made today in various locations in the district. He also said that a worker would be hauling rock to provide the base for the paving at the Farmer’s Market. This is the county’s commitment to the Salem Area Community betterment Association to provide “in-kind” rock and labor for the project. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2510, 3180 and 4290; and that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2070 and 2303. He will also have a man hauling rock for the Farmer’s Market paving project. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind everyone that the drug “take back” would be held this Saturday from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM at the Dent County Sheriff’s Office and at the Salem Police Department for the proper disposal of outdated prescription and over the counter drugs. Skiles also said that that the Home Loan Repair Funds that are to be provided through the Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation will not be available until after January 1st. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the last day to register to vote for the General Election would be October 10th. She said that she already has address changes for over 1,100 people since they last voted. If you have moved or just moved to Dent County, please call her office at 729-4144 or drop by the Dent County Courthouse to update your voter registration and new cards will be sent to you. At the last meeting, grader bids were accepted from Fabick and Company and Erb Equipment, but no decision was made. Lisa Blackwell came in from the Russell House and asked if flags could be placed on the courthouse lawn in recognition of October being domestic violence month. The commission approved the request. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers scored five runs in the 5th inning and added four more in the 6th en route to a 10-4 win over St. Clair on Monday. Taylor Frizzell went two for three with an RBI and Emily Moser drove in the go-ahead two runs in the 5th inning with a single that proved to be the game winner. Sam Parker and Kaytlyn Wells also had RBI's for the Lady Tigers. Salem is now 13-5-1 on the year and they will be hosting Union on Thursday.
The Salem Lady Tiger Volleyball team will host Houston tonight in SCA action. JV will start things off at 6:00 with the varsity to follow.
Yadier Molina and Peter Kozma homered to back seven solid innings from Lance Lynn, as the St. Louis Cardinals roughed up the Houston Astros, 6-1, in the opener of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park. Lynn (17-7) gave up one run on five hits while striking out nine for the Cardinals, who have won three in a row and sit 3 1/2 games ahead of the Brewers and Dodgers for the second NL wild card spot. The Cardinals and Astros play again tonight at 6:30 on KSMO.
Prince Fielder homered and Justin Verlander tossed eight solid innings, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Kansas City Royals, 6-2, in the opener of a four-game series. Alex Gordon hit a solo homer for the Royals, who have lost two straight since a four-game winning streak. Luke Hochevar (8-15) allowed six runs, five earned, on 12 hits over 7 1/3 innings. The Royals and Detroit Tigers play again tonight.
