The body of 44-year old Michael Joseph Gleason of Salem was found by the Salem Police Department Tuesday, September 23rd and transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital in Salem. Dr. Ekeke of the Salem Memorial District Hospital pronounced Gleason dead at 11:56 pm. Craig Tatom of the ER Department notified Dent County Coroner Eddie Wilson. No autopsy was performed as a gunshot residue test was performed. It was determined that Gleason died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The body was released to the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

The Dent County Sheriff's Department released their report for the month of August. For the month there were 63 9-1-1 calls, in which all were responded to with thirteen of the calls being prank calls. The Department served 190 papers consisting of 132 civil papers, 53 criminal papers and five notices to vacate, plus they served nine felony warrants and 10 misdemeanor warrants. During the month, there were three drug arrests and 11 domestic disturbance calls were addressed. The Sheriff's Department issued 28 tickets and assisted on 13 traffic accidents. For the month of August, the Sheriff's Department investigated five burglaries, three assaults, six thefts, four reports of property damage, four reports of crimes against children, and six reports of trespassing and/or property line disputes. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department also conducted three death investigations. The Department spent 16 hours working in court and six hours testifying. The Dent County Sheriff's Department handled a total of 195 calls during the month and made four community policing appearances. In the Dent County Jail Report for August, there were 44 prisoners incarcerated for the month with an average daily total of 13. There was one transfer to the Department of Corrections, two transfers to a mental facility and one transfer to or from other departments. During the month of August, the sheriff’s department drove a total of 18,677 miles on criminal investigations, patrolling and prisoner transportation.

Each year the Governor of Missouri and the Missouri Humanities Council celebrate the accomplishments of people who have made exceptional contributions to our understanding of Missouri, its people, and its stories. These awards are based on nominations from the public for outstanding contributions to the humanities in Missouri. The awards ceremony will be held on October 22, 2008 at the Missouri Governor's Mansion in Jefferson City. The Book Award recognizes individuals or groups whose book or publication has increased our understanding and appreciation of Missouri's history and culture. The 2008 Governor's Humanities Award winners in this category include Mitch Jayne of Eminence for Fiddler's Ghost; the master storyteller's tale of suspense featuring the characters, music, and customs of Ozark Mountain culture. The Missouri Humanities Council enables families and communities to broaden their appreciation of history, literature, and the ideas that shape our democracy. MHC is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and receives support from the State of Missouri, private and public foundations, and individual citizens.

The Missouri Department of Revenue is continuing to process applications for the Homestead Preservation Credit program that provides a real estate property tax credit to qualified senior citizens and disabled persons. Applications must be postmarked no later than October 15, 2008, to be eligible. The Homestead credit is provided to 100 percent disabled persons or to Missourians age 65 or older as of January 1, 2008. To qualify if married, one spouse must meet the age 65 requirements and the other spouse must be age 60 or older. Additionally, the applicant(s) must have a 2007 Federal Adjusted Gross Income of $77,323 or lower, submit copies of paid real estate property tax receipts for the previous three years and own and occupy the property. Mining companies in various operational categories were recognized for achieving the greatest numbers of employee work hours in 2007 without a fatal injury or an injury that resulted in lost workdays.  Each also had a no-workdays-lost incidence rate less than the national average for its group.  To qualify, a company had to compile at least 4,000 employee work hours during the year. In Missouri, the Doe Run Company’s Buick Mine and Mill in Boss won first place in the Large Metal Underground Group category with 304,121 hours without a fatal injury or an injury that resulted in lost workdays.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will host Richland this afternoon at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Fields.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host the Cabool Lady Bulldogs in SCA play tonight starting at 6:00 with the JV game followed by the varsity contest.

Chase Daniels and Sean Weatherspoon of the Missouri Tigers have been named Big 12 Players of the Week. Chase Coffman was named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week with his 10 catches against Buffalo.  Missouri has this weekend off before beginning their big 12 schedule.

Adam Wainwright held Arizona to a pair of runs in six-plus innings and the St. Louis Cardinals dealt a big blow to the playoff-hopeful Diamondbacks with a 4-2 victory, in the third installment of a four-game series from Busch Stadium. Wainwright (11-3) gave up seven hits with five walks and two strikeouts in the win while Adam Kennedy had a pair of hits and knocked in a run for the Cards, who were officially eliminated from postseason contention Tuesday and won for just the fourth time in 14 games. The Cards and Diamondbacks play this afternoon at 1:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Mitch Maier's three-run triple capped a seven- run fifth inning, helping Kansas City to a 10-4 win over the Tigers to complete a sweep at Comerica Park. Winners in 11 of their last 13 contests, the Royals moved a game ahead of Detroit for fourth place in the AL Central. Kansas City is trying to end the season out of the basement in the division after four straight last-place finishes. Tony Pena and John Buck each delivered two RBI for the Royals, who outscored the Tigers 21-6 over the three-game series. Brian Bannister (9-16) allowed seven hits in six shutout innings to win for just the second time in his last 12 decisions. The Royals will have today off.

Funeral services for Clarence Harnetz of Cuba, age 67, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Vienna City Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Juanita “Delores” Stites of Steelville, age 70, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cherryville First Baptist Church Cemetery in Cherryville.
