The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night at the city hall council chambers. In the hearing of persons, Everett Kelly, the State of Missouri Commander of the Order of the Purple Heart, presented Mayor J.J. Tune and the City of Salem a proclamation on becoming a Purple Heart City and also a plaque. City Administrator Ray Walden said Archer-Elgin engineering and the City of Salem Water Supervisor Jack Emory did a final walk through on McArthur to make sure those water and sewer projects were finished. Pace Construction from St. Louis is in the process of removing the crown and making other repairs to the street. Walden reported the MRPC has given preliminary approval for the renewal of the recycling grant for over $20,000. The final approval will come from DNR in January. The City Wide Yard Sale will be Saturday, October 4th and the Fall Clean-Up week will follow starting on October 6th. Walden said the contractor has started on the refinishing of the tennis courts and they should be finished by the middle of the week. Walden reported the city audit is about finished and the revenue items are on track. He did say that a budget and planning workshop would be held after the audit to determine the priority items for the next budget year. Mayor J.J. Tune stated he attended the Park and Recreation Department Board meeting to discuss how they can help fund their own department. He did say the park board would be looking at a number of options including a sales tax. Tune said Sunday the City presented a Proclamation for Gladys Sisco Day. Sisco has lived at Seville Care Center for 10,000 days which is over 27 years. Walden suggested new board dates starting on Tuesday, October 14th and lasting through the end of the year that were approved by the Board. Walden also presented to the board the grant from MoDOT for improvements to the airport for $153,096. The grant has an initial amount of funds to be furnished by the city of not to exceed $9,204.00 and the board approved accepting the grant. In closed session, the board approved the contract with HW Lochner to complete the airport update. Also in closed, the board voted to have MoDOT project contractor Pace Construction add an additional ¾ inch of asphalt to the overlay portion of the Route J project for $59,598.50. Up to $75,000 in the 2014-15 budget had been approved for the additional overlay. The meeting then adjourned.

A fatality accident occurred Friday at 5:07 Friday afternoon in Texas County on Route C about a 1/10th of a mile north of Licking took the life of a teenager from Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 Ford F-150 driven by 30-year old Ryan Reddy of Licking struck a horse drawn buggy from behind. In the accident, 14-year old Amos Girod and 12-year Lizzie Girod were flown by Air Evac to Cox South in Springfield where Amos Girod died from his injuries at 7:55 Friday night. Lizzie Girod suffered serious injuries. Suffering minor injuries was 15-year old Sarah Girod of Licking who was taken by ambulance to the Texas County Memorial Hospital. The Ford F-150 sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Jay’s Towing while the horse drawn buggy was totaled and removed from the area by a private party. Reddy was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident while the Girod children were exempt.

Mark Twain National Forest in 2014 will join other federal agencies offering recreation fee-free days on public lands on National Public Lands Day. Free camping at non-reserved campsites Friday, September 26th and Saturday, September 27th, free day use on Saturday, September 27th and Sunday, September 28th. Camping and day use fees will be required at all concessionaire-operated sites. Motorized trail permits and normal fees still apply for use of Chadwick and Sutton Bluff trail systems. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, September 27th aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. The Salem Police Department located at 500 North Jackson and the Dent County Sheriff’s Office located at 112 East 5th Street will be participating this Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

This month, the Salem Area Arts Council will be hosting their monthly community acoustic jam at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center (ONCRC) in Salem this Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m. Musicians and listeners of all ages and talents and interest are invited. There is no cost but your time. The Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center is located at 202 South Main Street in Salem. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers used a six run second inning to help top the Willow Springs Lady Bears on Tuesday, 10-5. Kari Hatridge, Savannah Hanning, Camryn Pryor, and Payton Curley finished with two RBI apiece. Salem is now 8-2 on the year and 2-0 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers will play at Ava today at 4:30.

Welington Castillo drove in Anthony Rizzo with the game-winning run in the 10th inning as the Chicago Cubs eked past the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Tuesday. The Cardinals lost for just the third time in their last 11 games but saw their division lead shrink to 1 1/2 games over Pittsburgh with four games left. Matt Holliday smacked a two-run homer in defeat. The Cardinals and Cubs play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.

Yordano Ventura tossed seven scoreless innings and got plenty of run support in the Kansas City Royals' 7-1 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday. Ventura (14-10) limited the Tribe to just eight baserunners, four hits and four walks, while striking out six over his career-high 117-pitch outing. Omar Infante, Salvador Perez and Alex Gordon all drove in two runs for the Royals. Kansas City still trails Detroit by one game in the AL Central. It did, however, move three games ahead of Seattle for the American League's second wild card position. The Royals and Indians play again tonight.

Funeral services for Martha May Royal of Rolla, age 773, will be held today at 1:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 in the morning until service time on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Garden.

Memorial services for Cloy Thomas Richards of Salem, age 78, will be held tonight at 6:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 5:00 until service time. There will be no interment. Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association or Project Win.

Funeral services for Margaret Louise Bay of Salem, age 75, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Graveside services for Carl Hertfelder Jr. of St. James, age 85, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in St. James. Visitation will be Friday morning from 10:00 until time of service at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Lewis Edwards of Salem, age 67, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
