The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Friday night. Boy Scout Troop 405 was in attendance to offer assistance to the City in any way. The board approved a request from Salem United Methodist Church to temporarily close Doss Road from Highway 32 East to Roosevelt for their Trunk or Treat on Halloween from 4:00-9:00 pm. They also approved closing the cemetery during this time in order to get their guests to use the church parking lot. The city received no bids for a Liquid Depth Weir Trough fro the Waste Water Treatment Facility. The board approved Alderman Jerry Randell’s motion to reject all bids to purchase the Old Middle School and to re-bid the project City Administrator Clayton Lucas reported that he recently attended a Missouri Public Risk Conference and the Missouri Municipal League conference. Lucas presented the Alderman with a detailed accounting of the tile work done at the City Administrative offices. By purchasing the tile and using city workers to do the work it saved the city $1,532.67. With Alderman Nash and Randell questioning this work, Lucas will present documentation of the verbal bids that were received at the next meting. The sealant for the tile will be purchased from a local company that previously bid to do the tile work and had already purchased the sealant. City workers will do the work. Aldermen Powell and Giacomelli have received several calls about the feral cat problem. Code Officer Jared Brown reported that he has 20 traps out and captures 5-6 caps per day. Mayor Gary Brown said that the Cobra Car Show was a big success and that other car clubs would like to do other shows. The city will get a $200,000 grant from the Delta Regional Authority for the McArthur Road project and that all letters of support that were requested have been received. The board approved a $3,200 bill from Parks Ready Mix for gravel for the Street Department. Mayor Brown appointed and the aldermen approved promoting Marty Farrar as Police Major. Lucas requested filling an open Police Officer position. He presented a comparison of the overtime that must be paid without hiring another officer versus hiring an additional officer. Aldermen Powell and Giacomelli voted yes with Nash and Randell voting no. Brown broke the tie by voting to fill the position stating that the safety of the citizens is of vital importance. The meeting was then adjourned.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department has released their reports. On Wednesday, September 19th, deputies responded to a wooded area located off of County Road 2150. A person that was hunting on the property located a vehicle parked on a log road. The investigation revealed that the vehicle had been stolen from Ava on July 17th and the vehicle was removed. On Thursday, September 20th, deputies and officers from the South Central Drug Task Force arrested Billy Earl Woolman of Lake Springs on a Federal Indictment issued be the United States District Court. He was charged with knowingly and intentionally conspiring to manufacture in excess of fifty grams of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine. He was also charged with knowingly and intentionally manufacturing methamphetamine on a premise in which an individual under the age of eighteen was present. The charges stem from a search warrant that was conducted on the Woolman residence on March 16th. At that time officers located an active methamphetamine lab in the basement of the residence. Department of Family Services was contacted because of the two children inside the home while methamphetamine was being manufactured. Anyone with any information that could help with the investigation of the stolen vehicle are asked to contact the Dent County Sheriff's Department at 729-3241.
The Salem Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will be hosting a "BOOKS ARE FUN" BOOK FAIR, books & gifts at great savings, on Tuesday, September 25th from 7:00 to 4:00 in the hospital library.

The Salem Football Tigers stopped the Ava Bears with a quarterback sack in the final seconds to hold onto an exciting 23-20 win catapulting them to the top ranking in Class 3. Zane Kyzer led the Tigers with two touchdowns while Brady Floyd ran for 100 yards and a score. Wynton Kube kicked a 28-yard first quarter field goal for Salem that proved to be the margin of victory. Salem is now 5-0 on the year and 3-0 in the SCA and they will travel to Willow Springs on Friday to face the Bears.
Cortney Putman threw six scoreless innings and struck out seven as the Salem Lady Tigers downed Mountain Grove, 10-0, on Friday. Kaytlyn Wells finished with two RBI and she scored twice as Salem moves to 12-5-1 on the year and 4-1 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers will host St. Clair today at 4:30 and you can hear it on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com.
Pete Kozma homered and drove in a pair, Allen Craig added a two-run double, and the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Chicago Cubs, 6-3, in the rubber match of a three-game series. The Cards remain 2 1/2 up for the NL's final wild card spot. St. Louis will start a series with the Houston Astros tonight at 6:30 on KSMO Radio.
Carlos Santana smacked a pair of home runs as the Cleveland Indians routed the Kansas City Royals, 15-4, in the finale of a three-game set Sunday at Kauffman Stadium. Adam Moore clubbed his first home run for the Royals, who will start a series with Detroit tonight.
Connor Shaw put on a passing clinic as the seventh- ranked Gamecocks downed the Missouri Tigers, 31-10, at Williams-Brice Stadium. Missouri quarterback James Franklin was limited to 92 yards on 11-of-18 passing. Missouri will play UCF on Saturday.
The Chicago Bears' defense held the St. Louis Rams without a touchdown en route to a 23-6 victory at Soldier Field. Sam Bradford completed just 18-of-35 passes for 152 yards with a pair of interceptions. The Rams will play the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
Ryan Succop kicked the last of his six field goals with 6:27 remaining in overtime to lift the Kansas City Chiefs to a 27-24 win over the New Orleans Saints. Jamaal Charles finished with 233 yards on 33 carries for the Chiefs, who will [lay the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.

Funeral services for Jack R. Knudson of Bridgeton, age 96, will be held today at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
Funeral services for Gilbert B. Malone of Seaton, age 73, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the St. James Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 today.
Funeral services for Larry Eugene Ham Sr. of Salem, age 59, are incomplete at this time. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
