The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative offices boardroom. Superintendent Cindy Rumpf indicated that the National Honors Society Induction Ceremony will be held on October 10th at 2:00 pm at the High School. She noted during her reports that the district activity calendar is now on the front page of the website and is being updated as needed. She also said that many compliments have been received. In budget updates, Rumpf informed the Board of current economic situations facing the district as reported by L.J. Hart such as Prop C revenues that continue to decline which is a state revenue for the district; the jobless rate is at 9.2% which means a loss of employment taxes paid to the state; that transportation revenue may be entirely gone by 2013; and that summer school funds may get cut this year and it was suggested not to consider summer school for next year. Ideas to help during these difficult times would be for the district to be mindful of cash flow, revenues versus expenditures on a daily basis; amend budgets to reflect state reductions; place classroom trust fund money in Fund 1 which the district has done already, and the hope is that the Jobs Bill money may help support the budget for the year 2012. The Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP) review is done at least every five years to determine the effectiveness of programs. Salem R-80 will have a mini-review in November due to the continuation of their wavier that is based on student performance on the MAP-EOC assessments. Salem R-80 is preparing for a pre-view visit from area supervisor Tom Nichols, which will take place Friday, September 24th. The CIA-PLC Leadership Teams for Kindergarten addressed their Smart Goals Program. They had set a goal last year of 90% to be reading at or above their level by the end of the year and the goal reached was 98%. Based on last year’s goal, this years goal is 95% and for the first quarter of the school year their current rate is 80%. The Board approved the MUSIC renewal, and the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP). Salem R-80 Transportation Director/Mechanic Mr. Moreland was in attendance as the Board approved the bus routes for this year. He stated there were several new drivers this year with plenty of subs and two were still in training. It was noted that there is a meeting every month and the driving rules and regulations are discussed. There was a question from the Board such as how close can two busses be to one another traveling in the same direction. Moreland responded that the busses have to be five bus links apart. Moreland asked if using safer ways to travel distances was in the best interest of the district and because at this time transportation is funded by the state, the district has to travel the routes that they deem are the ones to be used, but it will be looked into further. The Board then approved the resignation of Lisa Arzt as a para-professional effective October 1st. The Board then went into closed session.
