The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will hold their monthly meeting tonight in the hospital library at 6:00 pm. After approval of the minutes from the July 23
rd meeting and the public tax meeting held on August 20
th, Eddie Marmouget from BK&D Accounting Firm will give the annual hospital audit. Administrator Dennis Pryor will then update the Board on the auxiliary report, the hospital activity calendar and give a legislative update. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will give the summary of operations and statistics reports for the month of August, along with the nursing services and ancillary service reports followed by the Chief of Staff report. In old business, there will be a strategic planning update and a discussion on the SMDH video. During new business there will be a Board of Director selection discussion, a finance committee appointment, and an annual bylaw review. The Board will then set the joint Board of Directors and Medical Staff dinner for Thursday, December 10
th at the Holiday Inn in Salem, and the employee holiday dinner will be held on Friday, December 11
th at the Salem City Hall. After purchases for the hospital are addressed, the Board will then vote to go into Closed Session. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors tonight is open to the public.
Five people will be inducted on Monday, October 19th into the Missouri Newspaper Hall of Fame. The induction program will be held during the 143rd annual Convention of the Missouri Press Association, the newspaper organization in the state. One of this year's honorees will be the late W. Ray Vickery, a past MPA president and publisher of The Salem News. Mr. Vickery follows his mother and father into the Newspaper Hall of Fame. Robert L. and Margaret Vickery were inducted in 1992. In 1969, Mr. Vickery joined his parents at The Salem News. He later became the owner and publisher of the twice a week newspaper. He served as president of the Missouri Press Association in 1990. During his term he visited virtually all 300-member newspapers of the association. Mr. Vickery died of cancer on December 1, 2006.
U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced that her staff would visit with constituents throughout the Eighth District at Congressional Connection Stops. The Congressional Connection Stops gets staff out of the office and into communities where they can have these types of meeting on a drop-in basis. The Congressional Connection Stops in our area will be held on Monday, September 28th at the St. James City Hall from 9:00 to 10:00 am and then at the Salem Chamber of Commerce from 11:00 until noon that same day.
Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the results of a special enforcement operation that emphasized motor vehicle code compliance by the operators of commercial motor vehicles. This particular project utilized three troopers who patrolled Phelps County highways on Thursday, September 10, 2009. During the four-hour operation troopers stopped 26 commercial motor vehicles and seven other vehicles, which resulted in 51 warnings being issued. The troopers assigned to the project also issued two citations for speed, one citation for failure to wear a seat belt, four citations for commercial vehicle violations, and three citations for non-moving traffic offenses.
This month the Salem Area Arts Council will be hosting their monthly community acoustic jam at Southwest Baptist University in Salem on Saturday stating at 6:30. Musicians and listeners of all ages and talents and interests are invited. Bring your instruments and play along with the crew. No talent is needed, just your enthusiasm. All types of music from bluegrass, country, folk, gospel, modern, oldies, pop and ballads can be expected to be heard. There is no cost to be a part of the jam, just your time! The Seasonal Flu Clinic will be held Thursday, October 1st, at the Salem Freedom Activity Center sponsored by the Dent County Health Center. The clinic will be held from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM and the cost will be $20. Medicare or Medicaid will be accepted at the clinic.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers defeated Houston Tuesday night in SCA play in three game. Salem won the first game, 25-9, then lost 22-25 before winning the third game 25-20. The JV fell to Houston in two straight games, 25-16 and 25-11. The Lady Tigers will be at Cabool tonight to face the Lady Bulldogs starting at 6:00 with the JV action.
The Salem Lady Softball Tigers are scheduled to be at Richland today at 4:30.
Bud Norris tossed six shutout innings and Carlos Lee drove in two runs, as Houston avoided a three-game sweep with a 3-0 win over St. Louis. John Smoltz (1-2) worked six innings and gave up a pair of runs on five hits. The veteran right-hander struck out five without walking a batter. St. Louis could have clinched the NL Central with a win as the Cubs lost to Milwaukee. With Chicago's loss, the Redbirds magic number is now one to wrap up the division. The Cardinals are off today before traveling to Colorado for a weekend series with the Rockies.
David Ortiz went 2-for-4 with a homer and four runs driven in to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 9-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Yuniesky Betancourt went 3-for-4, scored once and drove in a run for the Royals, who have gone 12-4 since September 7. Luke Hochevar (7-11) took the loss after giving up six runs on eight hits with five strikeouts to three walks over five innings of work. The Royals and Red Sox wrap up their series tonight at Kaufman Stadium.
The Kansas City Royals have purchased the contract of pitcher Anthony Lerew from Northwest Arkansas (TL); activated pitcher Juan Cruz from the 15-day disabled list; placed pitcher Bruce Chen on the 60-day disabled list.

Funeral services for Willadean Walker of Rolla, formerly of St. James, age 62, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Wishon Cemetery in rural St. James. Memorials may be made to the Wishon Cemetery.
Funeral services for Erma Jean Gibbs of Salem, age 79, will be held this afternoon at 1:00 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Edgar Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church. All the arrangement are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
Graveside services for George Henry Woodcock of Salem, age 61, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Woodcock Cemetery in Lonedell, Missouri with Full military honors. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services for Thelma Reed of Licking, age 91, will be held Saturday at 2:00 the Boone Creek Church. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home Chapel in Licking. Interment will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery.
