An accident happened in Dent County Saturday night at 9:47 on Shawnee Mac Road about three miles northeast of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1994 Ford F-150 driven southbound by 16-year old Travis Wethy of Salem, went out of control on a curve and skidded sideways. Wethy then overcorrected and the Ford overturned onto the driver’s side ejecting a passenger in an unenclosed bed. Suffering serious injuries was 18-year old Terry Voyles of Salem while 18-year old Joshua Stockton and Travis Wethy suffered moderate injuries. All three were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital via the Salem ambulance. Suffering minor injuries in the accident was 14-year old Evan Parsons of Salem and 15-year old Jennifer Weber and they were both taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. Only Wethy was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford F-150 sustained moderate damages in the accident and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.
Following a lengthy investigation, on September 16th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers, along with officers from the Missouri State Water Patrol and Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, arrested two Crawford County residents on drug charges. At about 8:00 pm, a search warrant was served at the residence of Joanne M. Gillam, 52, of Davisville, as a result of evidence that she was growing marijuana. Also living at the Gillam home was Brock A. Snyder, 25, also of Davisville. A total of 25 marijuana plants, processed marijuana, and other drug-related items were located during the investigation. Gillam was arrested for felony manufacturing marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Snyder was arrested for felony manufacturing marijuana, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The investigation revealed that Snyder was also in the possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms. Both Gillam and Snyder were incarcerated in the Crawford County Jail following their arrests.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report for the month of August. For the month there were 89 9-1-1- calls, in which all were responded to with 16 of the calls being prank calls. The Department served 167 papers consisting of 110 civil papers, 48 criminal papers and nine notices to vacate, plus they served 21 felony warrants and 14 misdemeanor warrants. During the month, there were four drug arrests and ten domestic disturbance calls were addressed. The Sheriff’s Department issued 47 tickets, made five DWI arrests and assisted on 13 traffic accidents. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department also conducted two death investigations. For the month of August, the Sheriff’s Department investigated eight burglaries, ten assaults, four thefts, 11 property damage reports, and eight crimes against children. The Department spent 122 hours working in court and 30 hours testifying. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department handled a total of 266 calls during the month, made eight communities policing appearances, and conducted 116 traffic stops. In the Dent County Jail Report for August, there were 51 prisoners incarcerated for the month with an average daily total of 10. There were four transfers to the Department of Corrections, eight transfers to or from other departments, and three transfers to a mental facility. During the month of August, the sheriff’s department drove a total of 18,519 miles on criminal investigations, patrolling and prisoner transportation.
The City of Salem Fall Community Wide Yard Sale and Recycling will be held on Saturday, October 6th. The cost for each is $8.00 The recycling will be from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and will be held at 3rd and Grand Streets at the old street department shed and lot. There will be no recycling fee for glass, plastic, tin cans and car batteries. There will be a $5 recycling fee for computer monitors, TV’s and microwaves. There is also a recycling fee for tires, $1.50 for passenger car tires, $5 for truck tires and $10 for tractor tires.

The Cabool Bulldogs scored 14 unanswered points in the second half and beat the Salem Football Tigers Friday night, 20-6. Jacob Brooks had the lone touchdown on a 69-yard run for Salem who turned the ball over three more times in the game. Salem is 0-4 and they will be home to face Houston Friday night.
The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be at St. Clair today to face the Lady Bulldogs starting at 4:30. The Lady Volleyball Tigers will host Rolla tonight with the JV game starting at 6:00 and the varsity match to follow. KSMO will carry the varsity contest tonight starting at about 6:50.
Rick Ankiel’s two-run triple in the bottom of the 9th inning capped a three run rally as the Cardinals beat the Houston Astros, 4-3. The Cards, who were officially eliminated from the Central Division Race Friday night, will be in Milwaukee to face the Brewers. KSMO will join the game in progress after Salem Volleyball.
Marcus Thames homered twice, and Justin Verlander hurled six solid innings as Detroit downed Kansas City, 7-2, in the rubber-match of a three-game set at Comerica Park. Billy Butler homered and Jason Smith drove in a run for the Royals, who have split their last six games. Jorge De La Rosa (8-12), lasted just one inning and allowed four runs on four hits. Kansas City will be at Baltimore tonight.
Dwayne Bowe's 16-yard touchdown reception with under 9 1/2 minutes to go in the fourth quarter lifted Kansas City over Minnesota, 13-10, in the Chiefs' home opener at Arrowhead Stadium. Damon Huard completed 20-of-29 passes for 206 yards and the touchdown for the Chiefs (1-2).
Earnest Graham ran for touchdowns on consecutive drives as Tampa Bay pounded the St. Louis Rams, 24-3, at Raymond James Stadium. Marc Bulger completed 17-of-26 passes for 116 yards but threw three interceptions for the Rams (0-3).
Chase Daniel threw three touchdown passes and Jeremy Maclin returned a punt 64 yards for a score, helping No. 25 Missouri to a 38-17 victory over Illinois State at Memorial Stadium. Daniel completed 21-of-34 passes for 294 yards but was also intercepted twice while connecting on three TD throws for the Tigers, whose high-powered offense rolled up 581 yards.

Funeral services Nola M. Gaines of Salem, age 85, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 Wednesday morning until service time. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Hope Cemetery in Salem.
Funeral service for Norma Jean Coleman of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, formerly of St. James, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Wednesday evening. Memorials may be made to the Southern Cemetery. Interment will be in the Southern Cemetery in rural St. James.
Lenore Jenschke of Salem passed away on Sunday, September 23rd at the age of 80 years. No services are scheduled. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
