The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening at the administration boardroom. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal updated the Board on the building project. The track is nearing completion, as is the roof on the Jr. High. Many other projects are almost done with just a few things like painting to be completed. The roof will get certification on Wednesday, September 25th with a 25-year warranty. As of September 30th, all summer work activities will be done. In building reports, William Lynch Elementary held Grandparents' Day on September 6th, emergency drills were held September 10th to practice what to do in the event of a fire, tornado and an intruder. Family Night will be held this Friday, September 27th and Intervention Groups are up and running such as; Reading Recovery, Early Literacy, Kindergarten Readiness, the Back Pack and more. At the Upper Elementary, the 100-Mile Club has logged over 600 miles, and there will be a Mini Color Run on Tuesday, September 24th from 3:15 to 4:30 consisting of a mile in the front circle at the school. As of Wednesday,September 18th, a total of 296 had signed up that included parents, students, siblings and staff. The Salem Junior High was recognized by Walmart for having excellent teachers. They will be at the Jr. High with a cake and are donating 20 $50 gift cards for the teachers to use for supplies in the classroom. The Jr. High will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair October 9th through the 11th, and the Dent County Women's Fellowship donates "love packs" with non-perishable food items to 22 students at the Jr. High. The Salem Sr. High reported that two students have graduated through MO Options, 63 seniors took advantage of the ACT testing incentives last year and the new Missouri College Advisory Corp College Advisor is Rebecca Fryer. Fryer has a BS in Biochemistry and a minor in Spanish and Biology. It was noted that the Salem Sr. High had a successful blood drive September 13th and a great EOC Awards Assembly on September 17th. The Board approved the auditor's report, which was clean, and also approved the A+ Partnership Plan and bus routes. The Board then declared surplus property of a 1,000-gallon diesel tank for sale. The Board voted to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and during the hearing of persons, the Board will hear from the Salem United Methodist Church that wishes to request a road closure on Doss Road between Scenic Rivers Blvd. and Roosevelt for Trunk-R-Treat on Thursday, October 31st from 4:00 to 9:00 pm. Also during the hearing of person, Jerry Craig will be speaking in support of City Administrator Clayton Lucas. Then in bids, the city requested bids for the purchase of five new 6-cylinder 2013 Dodge Charger Police pursuit cars with Police equipment mounting bracket located between front seats, left factory stoplight provision with 6-inch LED spotlight installed, four additional key FOBS. Also the city requested bids for the purchase of a new Ford F450 Cab and Chassis truck and the city requested bids for the purchase of a new Ford F450 truck with a nine-foot steel dump bed for the Water Department. Bids will be presented to the Board. In unfinished business, at the last Board meeting, Salem R-80 requested a variance to use the 2009 International Business Code instead of the current 1999 BOCA Code for the project. City Attorney Seay was concerned about liability and safety issues and the Board tabled any decision until City Administrator Clayton Lucas could be present at the meeting to obtain additional information. S.N. Ball will then give a report on the Park Board meeting, Lucas will updated the Board on other items and Mayor Gary Brown will then give his reports on various issues concerning the city. In new and miscellaneous business, WCA has requested that October 7th through October 11th be designated for the Fall Clean-Up week with the Board’s approval. The Board will then adjourn their regular meeting and vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing litigation, contracts and personnel. The meeting of the Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Salem Football Tigers scored only once out of five opportunities on offense inside the 15-yard line and fell Friday night to the Thayer Bobcats, 23-6. The only Salem score was a touchdown pass to Paul McClain from Dylan Wisdom in the 4th quarter. Zane Kyser rushed for 170 yards on 16 carries for Salem, while Eli Floyd and Paul McClain each had two interceptions. Salem falls to 3-1 on the year and 1-1 in the SCA. They will be at Ava Friday night.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers host Dixon today at 4:30 at the Salem City Park. The Lady Tigers come into the game with an 8-7 record. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com and watch it on a delayed basis on Fidelity Local 6.

Norichika Aoki registered an RBI and three runs scored as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-4, on Sunday. Matt Carpenter clubbed a solo homer for the Cardinals, who clinched a playoff berth despite the loss after Washington dropped a game on Sunday. The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Washington Nationals tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio at 6:40.

Justin Maxwell clubbed a grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 4-0 win over the Texas Rangers in rubber match of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals will start a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners tonight at 9:10.

James Franklin threw for 343 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Missouri Tigers to a 45-28 win over the Indiana Hoosiers. Missouri (3-0) will play Arkansas State on Saturday.

DeMarco Murray exploded for 175 yards and a touchdown as Dallas pounded St. Louis, 31-7. Sam Bradford ended up with 240 yards passing for the Rams, who will play the 49ers Thursday.

Funeral services for Steve Huffman of Doolittle, age 42, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Roach Cemetery in Doolittle. Memorials may be made to the Firefighters Memorial Foundation.

Funeral services for Estelle Grotha of St. James, age 80, will be Wednesday at 11:00 in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. James. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the St. James Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Funeral services for Robert L. Wade of St. James, age 79, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Visitation will be held Wednesday night from 5:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Memorial services for Kay Marie Swaffar of Salem, age 60, will be held Thursday at 4:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary.
