The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that weather permitting, grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5170 and 5220, crews would be repairing signs and patching would be done on chip and seal roads in various area. Purcell also said that a grader was being serviced. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that materials would be hauled and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2020 and 3180, while brush would be cut on county road 4330. Larson reported that he attended the Council for a Healthy Dent County meeting on Wednesday. Discussions included the TCRC transition agreement and that previously the City of Salem had tabled their approval for funding of the TCRC and that has now been approved. Also addressed was the staff planning for the TCRC that will begin in November and there was also a discussion about future programs such as a walking program and a babysitting class. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District Executive Board meeting Tuesday. At that meeting a total of 16 grants were reviewed and scored for waste reduction and recycling that totaled $228,407. Skiles reported that in the eight county area, 14 of those 16 applications received were approved 100% with full funding and those totaled $204,470. There were no applications from Dent County for waste reduction and recycling. Skiles also reported the City of Salem and the Salem Memorial District Hospital voted in favor of support for up to $10,000 each going towards the cost of an interoperable communications system for Dent County. The Commission voted to move forward with that system and to pay the upfront cost of $12,000 to Interoperable Solutions with the balance of $23,000 then being due upon completion of the setup. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley was attending training and not able to be at the meeting. Deputy Dent County Clerk Crystal Pilkington reported that voters cards were mailed out on Wednesday, September 21^st. Everyone is asked to check their voter cards and report any changes that need to be made by calling the clerk’s office at 729-4144. The Dent County Commission along with the Missouri Department of Conservation and the U.S. Forest Service recently received designs from the Great Rivers Association Engineers for the Sinkin Creek Bridge on Dent County Road 5680. The Dent County Commissioners looked over and then approved those designs. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioner will be Monday morning at 9:00 am at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

Look through telescopes for close up views of the moon, planets, stars and possibly galaxies to appreciate the night sky unavailable to the naked eye or hindered by outdoor lighting. Be prepared for the weather and bring a flashlight. Visitors with their own telescopes are welcome. Akers Ferry is located at the intersection of Routes K and KK, both of which intersect Route 19, about 15 miles south of Salem. The STARS IN THE PARK program is FREE. Highway 32 in Iron County will be reduced to one lane while the Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform edge rut repairs. This section of road is located from Highway 21 to Highway 49. Weather permitting, the work will take place Monday, September 26^th through Tuesday, September 27^th from 6:30 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon. The work zone will be marked with signs.  Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area. Cortney Putman hit two doubles to help the Salem Lady Softball Tigers beat Richland 15-2. Sierra Hagler added a double as Salem moves to 12-5 on the year. The Lady Tigers will host Mountain Grove today at 4:00.

The Salem Lady Tiger Volleyball team lost to Houston in two straight games with scores of 25-15. The JV also lost in two straight games with scores of 25-23 and 25-14.

The Salem Football Tigers will host the Mountain Grove Panthers tonight in SCA play starting at 7:00 at the Salem High School Football Field. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at 6:30 with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt. Willie Harris capped a six run ninth-inning with a two-run single, as the New York Mets beat the Cardinals, 8-6, hampering St. Louis' chances of reaching the postseason. The Cardinals fell two games back of the wild card-leading Braves with six games to go. Allen Craig and Albert Pujols each homered for the Cards as Jake Westbrook pitched six effective innings. The Cardinals will host Chicago for the weekend starting tonight.

The St. Louis Cardinals retained the services of veteran Lance Berkman, agreeing to terms on a one-year contract Thursday. The 35-year-old switch-hitter entered yesterday's action batting .300 with 31 home runs, 21 doubles and 91 RBI in 138 games for St. Louis this season, his first with the club.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will start a three game series with the Chicago White Sox tonight.

The Missouri Tigers open up Big 12 play this Saturday, as they will be in Oklahoma taking on the top ranked Sooners with the pre-game show starting at 6:00 on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Rams will host the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday while the Kansas City Chiefs will travel to San Diego to face the Chargers. Both games get underway at 3:05.

Warren Peters scored the lone goal in the second period to lift the Minnesota Wild over the St. Louis Blues, 1-0, in preseason action. Jaroslav Halak stopped 16-of-17 shots for the Blues who will be in Colorado tonight.

Funeral services for Ella Mae Cowan of St. James, age 88, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be held tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the High Gate Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the High Gate Baptist Church or the Phelps Regional Hospice.

Memorial services for Betty A. Hart of Salem, age 90, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Salem United Methodist Church or the Dent County Museum. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Bernadine L. Davis of St. Peters and formerly of Salem, age 84, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday night from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem.

Graveside services for Jerry D. Wallace of Branson and formerly of Doolittle, age 58, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the MS Institute University of Missouri Hospital of Columbia. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
