The Salem R-80 Board of Education held the monthly meeting Thursday evening. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal gave a building project update. The building project is basically finished. Some landscaping and small touch-ups still need to be done. The focus now will be on blinds for the William Lynch Elementary and the High School classrooms. Kristi Crocker reported that the William Lynch Elementary practiced emergency drills and picture day was a huge success. Williams Lynch currently has 68 students in pre-kindergarten, 101 in kindergarten and 87 first graders. At the Upper Elementary, Melanie Wisdom reported tutoring has started and at last count has 307 students in attendance. Assistant Superintendent John McCullough gave the report for the Middle School. A big thank you went to Rick Hoyt for getting four TV’s up in the cafeteria. The average attendance was 95.7 % as of September 7th for Middle School students. John Smith reported that the Salem High School has nine students enrolled in the MO Options program. Fall sports are all in full swing and the band is gearing up for their first competition on September 27th. Also the Choir and Choir Boosters are working hard to raise funds for the trip to New York. The Board approved bus routes, increased substitute pay by $10 a day raising the rate to $75 per day, effective immediately, and approved a resolution opposing Amendment 3 on the November 2014 ballot. Finally, the Board voted to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will then conduct their regular meeting at 7:00 pm tonight. After approval of the agenda and during the hearing of persons, John Disner is to present the City of Salem a proclamation declaring the City of Salem a Purple Heart City. City Administrator Ray Walden will then update the Board on issues concerning the city as well as current and future projects. Mayor J.J. Tune will then give his report. In new and miscellaneous business Walden is requesting the Board to approve Alderman meeting dates through the end of the year. He will also update the Board on the current status of the airport master plan. The Board may then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing contracts. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department has released more of their reports. On Tuesday, September 9th at 1:16 in the afternoon, an officer responded to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of 22-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued at $42.70. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Then that night at 8:49, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 200 block of South Pershing in reference to an assault. The investigation revealed that a 50-year old Salem male had assaulted a 32-year old Salem male with a baseball bat, causing serious injuries. He was taken into custody for 1st degree assault and possession of a controlled substance and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. The victim was transported to Salem Memorial hospital and then to a trauma center for injuries sustained to the head and face, including multiple fractures. On Wednesday, September 10th at 3:30 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Classic Joy Ride storage units in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone entered a unit by cutting the lock and took items valued at $300. On Thursday, September 11th at 1:12 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 29-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released.  Please contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242 if you have any information regarding the theft, which is still under investigation.

Zayne Kyser rushed for 121 yards and touchdown, but the Salem Tigers fell to the Ava Bears on Friday, 23-21. Zak Eplin added a rushing touchdown as well as a score through the air. Salem is now 2-3 on the year and will play at Willow Springs on Friday.

The Salem Lady Tigers lost to Waynesville on Friday, 9-0. Salem fell to 6-3 on the year and they will play at Dixon at 4:30 this afternoon.

Jay Bruce homered twice to help the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. St. Louis, which clinched its fourth consecutive playoff berth earlier in the day via Milwaukee's loss to Pittsburgh, leads the Pirates by 2 1/2 games in the NL Central. The Cardinals start a three-game series with the Cubs tonight and you can hear it on KSMO starting at 6:30.

Norichika Aoki's two-run triple helped the Kansas City Royals pull a game closer to the Detroit Tigers with a 5-2 victory on SUnday. The Royals are within 1 1/2 games of the division front-runners and will start a three-game series with the Cleveland Indians tonight.

D'Angelo Roberts scored a 3-yard touchdown in the final minute and Indiana shocked No. 18 Missouri with a 31-27 win on Saturday. The loss sends the Tigers (3-1) reeling into SEC play on Saturday against South Carolina.

Tony Romo threw for two touchdowns and the Dallas Cowboys matched the largest comeback in franchise history to defeat the St. Louis Rams, 34-31. The Rams have the week off.

Knile Davis ran for a career-high 132 yards with a touchdown to lead the Kansas City Chiefs to a 34-15 win over the Miami Dolphins. The Chiefs will host the Patriots next Monday night at 8:30.

Funeral services for LeOra Mae Gray of Vichy, age 78, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the Broadway Baptist Church in Vichy. Interment will be in the Broadway Baptist Church Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Charles Dorman Payne of Potosi will be held today at 12:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Viburnum.

Funeral services for Thomas Howard Dixon of Salem, age 73, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Salem Lutheran Church. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Salem Lutheran Church or Walker-Roney American Legion Post #99.

Funeral services for Martha May Royal of Rolla, age 73, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 in the morning until service time on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Garden.

Memorial services for Cloy Thomas Richards of Salem, age 78, will be held Wednesday night at 6:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 6:00 Wednesday night. There will be no interment. Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association or Project Win.

Funeral services for Margaret Louise Bay of Salem, age 75, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will in the North Lawn Cemetery.
