Mark Twain National Forest will offer fee free days for National Public Lands Day this Saturday. No fees will also be charged for day use on Saturday and Sunday, September 24-25, and no fees will be charged for camping in non-reserved sites on Friday and Saturday night, September 23-24. All reservation fees still apply and motorized trail sites operated by concessionaires will still require fee payment. Volunteers helping on National Public Lands Day events will also qualify for a fee free pass for one visit during next year. The National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance public lands Americans enjoy. This is the sixth straight year for the all National Public Lands Day. Not only is the Mark Twain National Forest offering a “fee-free” coupon for volunteers who work at an event, but so will the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, or USDA Forest at any site managed by those agencies. The 2011 Old Miners' Day Celebration in Viburnum will kick off Friday September 30 and go through the weekend of October 1st and 2nd. The Old Miners Day event was organized 18 years ago to celebrate the heritage of the mining industry in Viburnum and surrounding communities. New this year will be the band POCO who started the laid back style of county rock and was a precursor to the band, the Eagles. Come and enjoy the many food and craft vendors, parade, activities mining competition, live entertainment and a free underground mine tour. The Salem Police Department released their recent reports. On Wednesday, September 14th at 4:50 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Classic Joy Rides on Craig Industrial Drive in reference to damage to a vehicle and thefts from storage units. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged the glass on a red 2000 Chevrolet Silverado truck. They also entered storage units and stole some of the contents. The value of the damage to the truck is $234. Later that night at 10:11, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of South Pershing Street in reference to property damage. The investigation of that report revealed that a person or persons unknown shot out a storm door glass valued at $100 with a BB gun. On Thursday, September 15th at 3:01 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to a residence in the 200 block of South Warfel in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown forcibly entered a residence and took electronics valued at $1,600. Later that night at 7:15, an officer was detailed to Third and Washington Streets in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 21-year old male of Salem for disorderly conduct and damage to private property. He was incarcerated and will be issued summons upon his release. Later on that night at 10:49, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of East Eleventh in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a small ATV valued at $350 from the yard of a residence. On Friday, September 16th at 1:27 in the afternoon, an officer made contact with a 37-year old female of Salem who had an active fugitive warrant from Phelps County. She was taken into custody and was able to post bond. She was released with a date to appear in court. The Salem Memorial District Hosptial Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00. After approval of the minutes from the public tax meeting and regulart meeting held on August 18, the Board will hear the annual hosptial audit report from Eddie Marmouget with BK&D. Controller Stephanie Wofford will udpate the Board on the summary of operations and statistic reprots for August and Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will update the Board on the nursing service and ancillary service reports, followed by the Chief of Staff Report. Administrator Dennis Pryor will then update the Board with the auxiliary report, hospital activity calendar, legislative issues and a construction update. In old business the Board will address the startegic planning goals for 2011 and there will be an annual bylaw review. In new business, the Board will address purchases for the hospital and may then vote to go into Closed Session. The monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hopstial Board of Directors is open to the public.

Samantha Parker’s late inning home run proved to be the difference as the Salem Tigers outlasted Dixon, 12-11 in the makeup game yesterday at the Salem City Park. Salem improves to 11-5 with the win and will host Mountain Grove Friday at 4:00 at the park.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at Houston tonight starting at 6:00.

The Cardinals' playoff chances were helped by a Braves loss, then got even better when David Freese's three-run homer in the seventh inning gave St. Louis a 6-5 victory over the New York Mets. Freese had a two-run triple prior to his heroics in the seventh, which made a winner of Jaime Garcia (13-7), who gave up four unearned runs on six hits in 7 2/3 innings of work. Jason Motte got the save as the Cards and Mets play again this afternoon at 12:10 on KSMO. The Cards are 1.5 game behind Atlanta in the wild card race.

Miguel Cabrera hit a go-ahead pinch-hit RBI double and Don Kelly added a two-run homer to cap a three-run eighth inning, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 6-3 win over the Kansas City Royals to cap a two-game set. Billy Butler and Jeff Francoeur both drove in a run for the Royals, who went 40-41 at home this season. Felipe Paulino lasted five innings and surrendered two runs on six hits. The Royals are off today.

Adam Cracknell scored the game-winning goal with 2:20 to go in the third period, as the St. Louis Blues defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-3, at Orlando's Amway Center. Nikita Nikitin, Chris Stewart and Ian Cole netted the other three goals for the Blues, who beat Tampa Bay on Tuesday. Ben Bishop started in net for the Blues and stopped 21-of-24 attempts. The Blues host Minnesota tonight at 7:00.

Funeral services for Mabel Irene Warren of Salem, age 74, will be held today at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

Funeral services for Edna Pauline Landrigan of Springfield, age 69, will be held today at 2:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Lone Pine Piatt Cemtery in Shannon County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Timber Church in Timber.

Funeral services for Ella Mae Cowan of St. James, age 88, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the High Gate Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the High Gate Baptist Church or the Phelps Regional Hospice.

Memorial services for Betty A. Hart of Salem, age 90, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Salem United Methodist Church or the Dent County Museum. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
