The Salem Lady Softball Tigers evened their record at 8-8 after blasting Willow Springs Tuesday in five innings, 17-1. Salem has 12 hits in the game. The Salem JV was also victorious as they beat the Lady Bears, 8-5. Salem on Monday lost to Dixon after splitting four games Saturday in the St. James Tournament, beating St. James and Bourbon while losing to Waynesville and Newburg. The Lady Tigers will host Richland Thursday afternoon at 4:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost to Ava Tuesday night in SCA play in two straight games, 25-18 and 25-18. The JV also lost their match as it went three games: winning the first game by the score of 25-11, then losing two straight games to the Lady Bears, 18-25 and 11-25. The Lady Tigers will be home Thursday night to face Houston in SCA play starting at 6:00. You can hear the varsity match on KSMO.
Jose Tabata hit a two-run triple to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game set. Albert Pujols drove in both runs for the Cardinals, who have dropped three of their last four. Jake Westbrook (2-4) was tagged for five runs on five hits with three walks over four innings. St. Louis dropped to eight games back of Cincinnati for the top spot in the NL Central with 12 games to play. The Cards and Pirates play tonight at 5:45 on KSMO.
The St. Louis Cardinals have given veteran infielder Felipe Lopez his unconditional release. Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak said that Lopez no longer fit in with the team's transition to younger players.
Mike Aviles had three hits and drove in three runs and Jarrod Dyson added three hits, three runs scored and a run batted in as Kansas City held off a late charge to down Detroit, 9-6, in the middle meeting of a three-game set. Billy Butler chipped in with three hits, a run and an RBI for the Royals, who have taken two of their last three games. Chen (11-7) allowed three runs on four hits with a walk and one strikeout over six frames to win his third straight decision for the Royals, who have evenly split eight games at Comerica Park.
The Missouri Tigers defensive end Aldon Smith will miss at least Saturday's game against Miami-Ohio with a broken bone in his leg. Smith suffered a broken fibula, the non-weight bearing bone in the lower leg, during Mizzou's 27-24 win over San Diego State. Sophomore Brad Madison will get his first career start in Smith's place on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Michael Sam will be the primary backup, with junior Jacquies Smith spelled by sophomore Marcus Malbrough, according to the Daily Tribune. Head coach Gary Pinkel also was reported as saying linebacker Luke Lambert (hamstring) and free safety Jasper Simmons (meniscus) may return for Saturday's contest.
