The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular meeting Thursday night. After the approval of the agenda, consent agenda and communications; Superintendent Steve Bryant discussed the Summer School Results Survey Summary. Summer School is comprised of 24 days with 6 1/2 hour in each of those days. The only negative part of the survey was the number of days required and the hours attending in those days. Assistant Superintendent Cindy Rumpf then discussed the Professional Development in-service and stated that 17 teachers from Salem will be presenters at the in-service meeting today. Bryant then updated the Board on the bond issue and stated that there is a 13-member committee at this point working on the bond issue and there will also be student involvement. In new business, there were several presentations on the CIA-Look Who's Teaching Outside the Bowl program and how it allows students to excel based on choices they make within the guidelines given on a topic. It was noted that Mrs. Pace is representing the district at the state level as part of a 14-district committee writing the K-12 curriculum. High School Counselor Susan Jadwin then explained to the Board the importance of having an English Learners Language (ELL) Program and Plan in place as is required by law. The ELL is for students that move to the district from another country and whose family is a migrant worker. The Board voted to approve the ELL program and plan that was presented and is to be maintained by Jadwin. The Board also approved the program evaluations on transportation, safety, as well as co-curricular and extracurricular programs. Salem R-80 approved the bus routes for this year as they have six bus routes that cover just over 100 miles. Safety Coordinator John McCullough stated that R-80 received a 92% rating in a student survey that showed students felt they were safe at school. He also stated that support staff not dealing directly with students comprises a Support Crisis Staff in case of an emergency. The Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary and Junior/Senior High principals each discussed the various extra curricular activities that are currently going on at each of the schools and their hopes for even more. A special thank you went out to all the teachers who give of their time in order for the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to keep going. It was noted that 75% of the students at the Senior High are in the drug testing pool that is up from last years rate of 70%. Mrs. Crocker gave a presentation on the preschool program research and information. It was noted that two of the four rural schools already have the program and the need for funding options was great in order to get it going at Salem R-80. Bryant then discussed the Salem R-80 School Foundation a.k.a. Community Foundation of the Ozarks, and recommended that the Board appoint Dr. Steve Watson as President and Wade Jadwin as Secretary for that board. The R-80 Board approved the recommendations. In closed session the board voted to employ Nancy Quinn as a Lower Elementary Title I Paraprofessional. The meeting was then adjourned.

Cody Wofford scored two touchdowns and ran for 149 yards as the Salem Tigers recorded their second straight shutout, beating Ava 40-0. Derek Freeman raced for 115 yards and two TD’s while Andrew Kissir scored on an 82-yard run. Salem is 3-1 on the year and 2-1 in the SCA. They will be at Willow Springs Friday.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers lost to Potosi Friday, 17-1, and fell to 3-7 on the year. There was no JV game. The girls will be at Dixon today starting at 4:30.

Chase Daniel had two touchdown passes and broke two records as fifth-ranked Missouri earned a 42-21 win over the Buffalo Bulls at Faurot Field. Daniel went 36-for-43 with 439 yards while Derrick Washington added two scores on 18 carries for 89 yards for the Tigers (4-0). Jeremy Maclin led the receiving corps with 14 catches for 168 yards and had a rushing touchdown. Daniel's eight-yard pass to Andrew Jones in the third quarter served as his 16th consecutive completion, breaking a school-record 15 consecutive completions previously held by Kent Kiefer against Texas-Christian University in 1990. His nine-yard pass to Maclin later in the third marked his 20th consecutive completion and set a new Big 12 record.

Ryan Dempster extended his career-high to 17 wins with five solid innings on the hill, as the Chicago Cubs routed their division-rival St. Louis Cardinals, 5-1, in the final regular-season game from Wrigley Field. Braden Looper (12-14) took the loss after yielding four runs on nine hits over six frames. Skip Schumaker went 3-for-4 and scored the lone run for the Cardinals. Albert Pujols drove in the run in defeat. The Cards will face the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight at 6:55 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Paul Konerko hit a two-run homer and John Danks scattered four hits over seven-plus scoreless innings as Chicago topped Kansas City, 3-0. Alex Gordon doubled for the Royals, who lost two of three in the series. KC starter Brandon Duckworth (3-2) took the loss, tagged for five hits and three runs over six-plus innings while walking one and striking out three. Kansas City will be at Detroit tonight.

Julius Jones ran for 140 yards and a touchdown, while T.J. Duckett added two more scores on the ground to lead the Seattle Seahawks to a 37-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams. Marc Bulger connected on 18-of-31 throws for 184 yards and a touchdown, with one interception for St. Louis (0-3). Steven Jackson managed only 66 yards on 23 carries but led the team in receiving with 62 yards on five catches.

Michael Turner ran for 104 yards and three touchdowns to give the Atlanta Falcons an impressive 38-14 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Tyler Thigpen struggled in his first NFL start for Kansas City, connecting on only 14-of-36 throws for 128 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. Larry Johnson carried the ball 24 times for 121 yards and a score for the Chiefs (0-3), who have now lost 12 straight games dating back to last season. Dwayne Bowe caught four passes for 43 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
