An accident occurred at 5:25 Wednesday evening in Phelps County that took the life of a Salem man. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer driven by 59-year old Larry Ham of Salem was traveling on Highway 68 about 12 miles north of Salem when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, and overturned. Ham was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Phelps County Deputy Coroner Lenox Jones at 6:12 and his body was taken to the Phelps County Morgue. Ham wasn’t wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5170, 5180, 5190, 5590, 5600, 6070, 6083, 6085 and 6110. He went on to report that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5110 and that repairs would be done on chip and seal roads throughout the district in various locations. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2120, 2150, 3180 and 4350; and that material would be added to Dent County Roads 2340 and 2380. Larson said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2303. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation Board has funds available for home repairs for low income housing such as for roof, windows, doors, etc. For more information and the qualifications to receive these funds, please call Connie Willman at the MCEC at 573-265-2993. Skiles also stated that Prosecuting Attorney Sid Pearson brought in an extension to finish the removal of the concrete and debris on the old Parks Lumber property which would delay the closing until November 20th. The extension indicates that the property will be cleaned up for a “walk through” on November 15th. The commissioners agreed to and signed the extension. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wants to remind everyone that the last day to register to vote for the General Election will be October 10th. She said that the first day to vote absentee would be September 25th at her office in the courthouse. She reiterated that if anyone has moved since they last voted or are new to Dent County to please contact her office at 729-4144 or drop by the Dent County Courthouse. That way the Dent County Clerk’s office can send you a new voter registration card with the correct polling place. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be held Monday morning.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 5:00. During the hearing of persons, the Salem United Methodist Church is requesting the closing of Doss Road from Highway 32 East to Roosevelt for Trunk or Treat on Halloween, October 31st from 4:00 to 9:00 pm and also requesting the closing of the Cedar Grove Cemetery during that time in order to get guests to use the church parking lot. In bids, City Administrator Clayton Lucas will present bids for a 47-foot x 12-foot liquid depth weir trough used at the WasteWater Treatment Facility. In unfinished business, the Board postponed any decision on the Old Middle School bids until after they had time to review the appraisal. In new and miscellaneous business, City Administrator Lucas is requesting approval of bills over $3,000 and Mayor Brown will then appoint Marty Farrar as the City of Salem Police Major with the Board’s approval. Lucas would then like to discuss the filling of an open Police Officer position. The Board will then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing real estate, litigation, contracts and personnel. The City of Salem Board of Alderman meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at the 2012 Awards Dinner. The banquet will be held on Thursday, November 1st at The Gathering Place of the Grace Community Church located at 600 South Water Street beginning at 6:00 pm. This year the Chamber Board decided to only hold a dinner to recognize and honor award nominees and recipients. Awards will be given in 6 categories: Business of the Year with 0-10 employees, Business of the Year with 11-25 employees, Business of the Year with 26-50 employees, Business of the Year with over 50 employees, Non-Profit Organization of the Year and the Customer Service Award (employee of a Chamber of Commerce member). Businesses, organizations and/or individuals have to be a current chamber member and/or an employee of a chamber business. Criteria and eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber Office located at 200 South Main Street or requested from chamber@salemmo.com. Kristen Hemken had two hits and drove in two runs and Cortney Putman threw a five-inning no-hitter as the Salem Lady Softball Tigers defeated Richland by the score of 11-1 in five innings. Kaytlyn Wells also had two hits and drove in a run as the Lady Tigers improve to 11-5-1 on the year. Putman struck out three and walked two in the game and the only run scored by Richland was the result of an error. The Lady Tigers will be a Mountain Grove today.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost to Ava in two sets on Thursday, 25-18 and 28-26. The JV faired better as they won in two sets, 25-15 and 25-22. Salem will host Houston on Tuesday.

The 2012 Homecoming will be held tonight, as the Salem Football Tigers will be hosting the Ava Bears at the Salem Football field. The game will start at 7:00 pm. The Homecoming Court consists of Sophmore Attendant Lexi Crocker, Junior Attendant Kassidy Martin; and the Senior Queen Candidates are Ashley Crocker, Chandler Parks and Alyvia Toman. Carlos Beltran's two-run double in the sixth inning proved to be the difference, as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros, 5-4, to complete a three-game sweep. Allen Craig hit a three-run homer for the Cardinals, who have a 2 1/2 game lead for the second of the NL's two wild card berths. Jaime Garcia (5-7) allowed three runs on six hits over six innings to pick up the win. The Cardinals will start a series with the Chicago Cubs this afternoon at 12:40 on KSMO.

Eric Hosmer ripped a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday at Kauffman Stadium. Johnny Giavotella added a two-run triple for the Royals, who have nine of their last 11 games against the White Sox. The Royals will start a three-game series with the Cleveland Indians tonight.

The Missouri Tiger football team will play at seventh-ranked South Carolina on Saturday. The Tigers are 2-1 on the year and you can hear the action on KSMO at 2:30.

The St. Louis Rams will be in Chicago Sunday to face the Bears while the Kansas City Chiefs be in New Orleans to play the Saints. Both games are set for a noon kick-off.

Funeral services for Richard Leroy Lea of Riverton, Kansas, age 68, will be held Monday at 12:00 (noon) at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Gladden Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Jack R. Knudson of Bridgeton, age 96, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Larry Eugene Ham Sr. of Salem, age 59, are incomplete at this time. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
