The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening at the district administration offices boardroom. Not in attendance at the meeting were Board members Jack Blackwell and Jimmy Williams. Superintendent Steve Bryant then explained to the Board that on the school website the activity calendar is listed for the whole district and is updated as needed. Bryant then updated the Board on facilities and stated that a roofing project would be finishing up this week. The Board was informed that the entire Salem R-80 district has stepped up measures on the 2009 H1N1 flu and is taking proactive preventative measures. Flu shots have been made available for the staff, custodians have stepped up their cleaning, busses are bombed on weekends and being sprayed during the middle of the week, and the computer lab students use a hand cleaner before and after each class. In new business, each of the schools had representatives from their CIA-PLC leadership teams address the Board with their Mission and Vision statements along with their themes. Climates were addressed at each of the schools and based on the reports from teachers themselves, teachers, staff and administration are pumped up and looking forward to a rewarding year in education for every student. The Board then amended the tuition rates for the 2008/2009 school year for the rural schools, for students in the 9th through 12th grade to $7,028.88 per student, which is now due. In a previous meeting with the rural schools, the rural school board had asked that for the 2009/2010 school year, that there be a set tuition rate based off of the Salem R-80 budget. After much discussion and questions, the Board approved a set rate for the 2009/2010 school year of $7,456.02 per student, and also approved that it be paid on a monthly basis. Normally the tuition is paid at the beginning of the following year, but the Board decided to have the tuition paid on a monthly basis. The Board then approved the program evaluation on safety and it was noted that the District is registered on the Missouri Office of Homeland Security website along with the Police and Fire Departments, and First Responders. Each school as well as personnel is listed, how to contact those at the schools, along with the blueprints of each building, aerial views and more. More safety meetings are also being planned. The Board then approved the program evaluation on co-curricular/extra-curricular activities at each of the schools. Each Principal at the schools updated the Board on numerous activities at each of the buildings as did Coach Smith. It was noted that all 9th through 12th grade students that participate in such activities are part of the Drug Testing Policy now in it's third year and it’s running smoothly. The Board then approved the MUSIC renewal for the district for their property and liability insurance. The Board also approved the Board of Education committee assignments. In Executive Session, the Board approved hiring Justin Crain as the Cross Country Coach.
An accident happened at 1:00 Saturday morning on private property near dent County Road 3150 about nine miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 52-year old Brenda L. Willard of Jadwin was driving a 2007 Honda Rancher ATV westbound when she struck a tree limb and was ejected from the ATV. Willard was airlifted to St. John Hospital in Springfield by the Hammonds Lifeline. Willard was not wearing any seat restraint at the time of the accident. The ATV was left at the scene.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington tonight beginning at 7:00 pm. During the hearing of persons, Grant Hamlet from the Dent County Fire Protection District will ask the City to waive the demand charges for the fire district’s building at #2 South Main because they state they are a non-profit organization and help the City a lot and would like consideration for the wavier. Street Superintendent Bryson will then present bids to the Board that were requested for street salt to use during winter weather. During the introduction and reading of bills, Bill #3180, an ordinance to authorize the Mayor to sign the petition for voluntary annexation of the highway right-of-way for Route 72 from the Highway 32-72 junction to the hospital will be presented. The meeting tonight is open to the public.

The Salem Tiger football team lost a heartbreaker to Ava Friday night as they took the Bears to overtime, but lost 13-7. Salem was trailing 7-0 late in the 4th quarter before Jake Schafer blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown to tie it up. Salem got the ball first in overtime, but couldn't score while Ava's Josh Wendler scored from a yard out. Salem's leading rusher was Derrick Freeman with 62. Salem is now 2-2 on the year and will host Willow Springs this Friday.
Blaine Gabbert threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Missouri scored six straight TDs in a 52-12 victory over Furman on Saturday. Gabbert completed 17 of 25 passes for 256 yards and tied his career high with three TD throws. He ran 40 yards for another score. Missouri (3-0) scored its first touchdown on a 40-yard pass from receiver Danario Alexander to fellow wideout Jared Perry. Perry added a 48-yard TD catch for the Tigers and set career highs with 7 catches for 161 yards.
Mitch Maier's RBI single in the third inning proved to be the difference, as the Royals got six solid innings from Robinson Tejeda in a 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox in the rubber match of a three- game series at U.S. Cellular Field. Tejeda (4-1) gave up one run on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks to take the win for the Royals.
Jake Fox clubbed the go-ahead two-run homer in the 11th inning, sending the Chicago Cubs to a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game series. St. Louis' magic number to win the Central Division title remained at four. The Cards will be in Houston tonight starting at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.
Shaun Suisham kicked three field goals to lead the Washington Redskins past the St. Louis Rams, 9-7, at FedEx Field. Marc Bulger was 15-of-28 passing for 125 yards and a touchdown for the Rams (0-2), who also dropped their Week 1 game against the Seahawks.
JaMarcus Russell was able to put a poor performance behind him with 2 1/2 minutes to play and led the Raiders 69 yards with Darren McFadden finding the end zone for the game-winner, as Oakland pulled out a 13-10 win over the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Matt Cassel ended 24-for-39 with 241 yards and two interceptions as the Chiefs are 0-2.

Funeral services for Erman Lavern Shaw of Salem, age 70, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family for expenses.
Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtle Johnson of Willow Springs, age 85, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church in Willow Springs. Interment will be in the Willow Springs City Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Willow Funeral Home in Willow Springs.
Memorial services for Janice Marie Berryman of Rolla, age 72, will be held Wednesday at 4:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 3:00 until service time Wednesday.
Funeral services for Claude Christopher Phelps Jr. of St. James, age 75, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be Friday at 1:00 at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis with Full Military Honors.
Funeral services for George Henry Woodcock of Salem, age 61, are incomplete at this time and are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Woodcock Cemetery in Lonedale, Missouri with full military honors.
