The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams updated the Commissioners on CART receipts. The receipts to date are down $998.67 for 2013 and $418.47 for the month when compared to 2012. The 2013 receipts to date are $458,906.10 and the 2012 receipts to date were $459,904.77. Joe Wilson of Allgeler, Martin and Associates was in to discuss and clarify the Commissioners’ request for consulting engineering to perform a comprehensive inventory of all low water crossings and culvert type openings four feet by 20 feet and larger. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 5610, commonly called the Turtle loop, 6090, 6100 and 6050. Purcell went on to say that materials were being added to County Roads 6420 and 5630, while brush was being cut on county road 2430. Purcell also stated that ditch work and debris removal was being done at the Swiney Bridge on County Road 5680. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 2500 and 3180. Larson also said that brush was being cut and materials were being added to County Road 2540. Larson added that Grader #31 was being serviced. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles updated the Commissioners on the South Central County Commissioners meeting October 11
th at the Texas County Justice Center. Skiles said that the county had a vacancy on the Meramec Regional Development Corporation Board. The Commissioners voted 3-0 to appoint Ray Walden. Skiles also said that the county needs to appoint a representative to the Meramec Region Community Foundation Board. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that she forgot to mention at Monday’s Commission meeting that she had sworn in Tina Whitaker as Assessor. Curley went on to say that she wanted to inform citizens that they should check to see if they might have unclaimed property in the form of bank deposits, stocks, bonds, insurance settlements, abandoned accounts, etc. Curley said that the easiest way to find out was to go to showmemoney.com, which is a State Treasurer’s Office website or citizens can come by her office to view the list if they don’t have computer access. Curley also stated that all the county tax rates had been certified by the state auditors office and will be turned over to the assessor’s office. Craig Ruble stopped in to inquire about the comprehensive inventory of the low water bridges and culverts. The Commissioners will open bids and select an engineering firm September 30
th and then Ruble can contact the selected firm relative to surveying services. The Commissioners approved bills and then went into Closed Session. Following closed session the Commissioners voted 3-0 to request the submission of bids for a security system for the Dent County Courthouse. Bids are to be submitted to Dent County Clerk Angie Curley by 10:00 am Thursday, October 3
rd. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 in the Courthouse and it is open to the public.
The Salem Memorial District Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that the hospital exceeded their goal of 1,000 participants utilizing the Health Fairs that were held at the hospital for 2013. There were a total of 369 that attended the Health Fair held on February 13th and 14th, 302 was the total in attendance at the Health Fair held May 8th and 9th and a total of 389 turned out at the Health Fair that was September 11th and 12th. The number of people turning out for the Health Fairs has continued to grow over the years. The total attendance for 2011 was 741 and then grew to a total of 965 for 2012. Total attendance for 2013 is 1,060.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers fell to 0-6 as they lost to the Licking Lady Wildcats in two straight games, 25-8 and 25-22 at the SHS gym. The Lady Tigers will be in Bunker Monday at 6:00 for non-conference play.
The Salem Lady Tiger Softball team beat the Steelville Lady Cardinals in five innings on Thursday, 14-4. Camryn Pryor hit a grand slam and finished with six RBI as Payton Curley added five RBI for Salem, who is now 8-7 on the year. The Lady Tigers will host Waynesville this afternoon at 4:30. (POSTPONED DUE TO THE RAIN)
The Salem Football Tigers will take on Thayer in SCA Conference action tonight at 7:00 at the SHS Football Field. Salem enters the game with a 3-0 record while Thayer has a 1-2 record. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio, online at ksmoradio.com, or watch the game live on Fidelity Channel 6 or on fidleitylocal6.com. While at the game, you can buy a yard line for a chance to win two tickets to the St. Louis Blues Hockey game on February 1st against Nashville at Scottrade Center. Each ticket costs ten dollars and a winner is guaranteed! The prize includes covered parking. All the proceeds benefit the Salem Band Boosters.
Corey Dickerson's second triple of the game drove in the deciding run in the bottom of the 15th inning as the Colorado Rockies dealt the St. Louis Cardinals a 7-6 loss. The Cardinals will start a series with the Brewers tonight and you can hear it on KSMO following the Salem game.
The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will start a three-game series with the Texas Rangers tonight at 7:10. The Royals as 80-72 on the year and are three games back of the final Wild Card spot in the AL.
The Missouri Tiger football team will be in Indiana to face the Hoosiers on Saturday at 7:00. Missouri is 2-0 on the year and you can hear the second half of the game on KSMO Radio following the Cardinal game.
The Kansas City Chiefs went out and surpassed their 2012 win total as they forced five turnovers in their 26-16 triumph over the Philadelphia Eagles. Kansas City will play the New York Giants next Sunday at noon.
The St. Louis Rams (1-1) will be in Dallas Sunday to face the Cowboys at noon.

Graveside services for Carl G. Vance of Salem, age 75, was held Saturday at 10:00 at the Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Carl Vance. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Edna Armstrong of St. Louis and formerly of Salem, age 81, was held Saturday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment wias in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Memorial service for Doug Barrett of Cherryville was held Saturday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
Funeral services for Freida J. Lewis of Salem, age 94, will be held Sunday at 2 o'clock at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday at 12 noon until 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Charity of your choice.
Funeral services for Steve Huffman of Doolittle, age 42, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 until 6:00. Interment will be in the Roach Cemetery in Doolittle. Memorials may be made to the Firefighters Memorial Foundation.
