The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their regular monthly meeting tonight at the District Administrative Offices Boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal will address the Board with his reports. In new business, the Board will address the CIA-PLC leadership teams, the A+ partnership plan; approve bus routes and playground equipment for the Upper Elementary. In old business the Board will discuss surplus property. The regular meeting will then adjourn and the Board will then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.
A special waste collection for electronics and appliances will be held from 8:00 am to noon on Saturday, September 22nd at the Brewer Science, Inc. parking lot, in HyPoint Industrial Park. The Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District (ORSWMD), Brewer Science, Inc. and the City of Rolla, in partnership with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) and the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC), are offering the collection. Computer CPUs, keyboards, printers, stoves, washers, dryers, microwaves, VCRs, cell phones and other electronics will be collected for free. A $5 fee for residents will be charged for the collection of televisions and computer monitors. Participants must unload all items. There is no fee for the collection of refrigerant appliances. No items from businesses will be accepted. The collection is open to any households in the Ozark Rivers District, including Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski, and Washington counties. The solid waste district is tasked with reducing by 40 percent the amount of waste generated for disposal. Missouri deer hunters can now apply online for managed deer hunts. More than 6,000 hunters will have a chance to participate in 99 managed hunts from mid-September through January. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) holds an electronic drawing to determine who gets to participate in special managed deer hunts at conservation areas, state parks, national wildlife refuges and urban parks. The hunts are open to Missouri residents and nonresidents and help achieve MDC’s deer-management goals for the state while also providing additional hunting opportunities. Types of hunts include archery, crossbow, muzzleloader, historic methods and modern firearms – plus youth hunts and hunts for persons with disabilities. Hunt dates, locations and other details are listed on the managed hunt application page on the MDC website at mdc.mo.gov/node/8712. Details about managed hunts also are available in the 2012 Fall Deer and Turkey Hunting Regulations & Information booklet, available at MDC offices, on the MDC website, and from permit vendors around the state. Hunters may apply individually or as groups of up to six, except for youth hunts. Youths 11 years of age or older may apply singly or with one other youth and must be accompanied on the hunt by a qualified adult. Applicants need a nine-digit Conservation ID number for each hunter to complete the application process. To get a Conservation ID number, call 573-751-4115. MDC will post drawing results at the same website address until to December 31st. Successful applicants will receive area maps and other information regarding their hunts in the mail. Resident or nonresident managed deer hunting permits are required to participate in managed hunts.
The Missouri Public Service Commission’s Manufactured Housing and Modular Units Program has received information from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regarding the voluntary recall of certain GE dishwashers. The voluntary recall involves GE, GE Adora™, GE Eterna™, GE Profile™ and Hotpoint® brand dishwashers sold from March 2006 through August 2009. According to the CPSC, an electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element can pose a fire hazard. The CPSC advises consumers to stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. The CPSC states the model and serial numbers of the dishwashers can be found on a metallic plate located on the left tub wall visible when the door is opened. The Salem Park Board will hold their regular meeting on today at noon at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. After the call to order, the board will have a report from the Parks & Recreation Director Greg Nash. The board will then discuss fall sports programs; have an update on the City Pool, the Soccer fields and the Parks sales tax. In other business the board will discuss the restructuring of the Parks & Recreation Department and the addition of flagpoles at the Freedom Center and the City Park. The Salem Park Board meeting is open to the public.
The University of Missouri Wurdack Farm at Cook Station will host a Management Intensive Grazing School on September 27th and 28th. The two-day program will include guest speakers covering the topics of grazing system layout and design, watering systems, fence systems, soil fertility, livestock nutrition, and forage quality and growth. Additionally, two farm tours will be included to allow participants to get hands on experience, and observe existing grazing systems. The cost of the two-day school is $85 per person or $120 per farm couple. This fee includes the cost of meals and the Resource books and other handout materials pertinent to the course. A $50 advance deposit will be required to reserve a space, and must be received by no later than September 21st. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at the 2012 Awards Dinner. The banquet will be held on Thursday, November 1st at The Gathering Place of the Grace Community Church located at 600 South Water Street beginning at 6:00 pm. This year the Chamber Board decided to only hold a dinner to recognize and honor award nominees and recipients. Awards will be given in 6 categories: Business of the Year with 0-10 employees, Business of the Year with 11-25 employees, Business of the Year with 26-50 employees, Business of the Year with over 50 employees, Non-Profit Organization of the Year and the Customer Service Award (employee of a Chamber of Commerce member). Businesses, organizations and/or individuals have to be a current chamber member and/or an employee of a chamber business. Criteria and eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber Office located at 200 South Main Street or requested from chamber@salemmo.com. Sam Parker finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and she scored 4 runs as the Salem Lady Softball Tigers topped Willow Springs on Tuesday, 9-8. Ashlyn Cook added 2 RBI as Salem moves to 10-5-1 on the year and 3-1 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers will host Richland today at 4:30 and you can hear that game on KSMO Radio 1340 AM and online at ksmoradio.com.
David Freese hit a two-run home run to help the St. Louis Cardinals take a 5-0 win over the Houston Astros in the second of three from Busch Stadium. Yadier Molina added a solo home run, while Matt Holliday and Allen Craig each drove in a run for the Cardinals, who have won three straight. The Cardinals and Astros will finish up their series this afternoon and you can hear it on KSMO Radio at 12:10.
Bruce Chen tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings of five-hit ball and the Kansas City Royals blanked the Chicago White Sox, 3-0, in the second test of a three-game series Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium. Alex Gordon clubbed a two-run double and Billy Butler added a sacrifice fly for the Royals, who had lost four of their last five coming in. The Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox play again tonight.

Funeral services for Larry Whitaker of Salem will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Dry Fork Church.
Funeral services for Gilbert Ray Welch of West Monroe, Louisiana and formerly of Salem, age 93, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Tower Grove Baptist Church in St. Louis. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 7:00 at the church. Interment will be Saturday morning at 10:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Tower Grove Baptist Church beautification fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Richard Leroy Lea of Riverton, Kansas, age 68, will be held Monday at 12:00 (noon) at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Gladden Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family for funeral expenses.
