The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their September meeting tonight in the boardroom at 6:00. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal will give the building project update, followed by reports from Principals at each of the buildings. In new business, the Board will approve the auditor’s report, the A+ Partnership Plan, declare surplus property and approve bus routes. The Board will then adjourn their regular meeting and vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The September meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their report on an arrest that occurred on Monday, September 16th in Dent County. At 9:55 in the morning, 40-year old Jeffrey Piatt of Boss was arrested and charged with felony possession of drug precursors with intent to manufacture, felony possession of chemicals with intent to manufacture, felony possession of a controlled substance, felony unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and misdemeanor unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. Piatt was taken to the Dent County jail and put on a 24-hour hold.

The public is invited to attend an open house and informational meeting at Current River State Park on Saturday, Sept. 21. The meeting will be held in the park’s historic Alton Club Lodge between noon and 2 p.m. A portion of Current River State Park is made up of the Alton Club property, a former corporate retreat for the Alton Box Board Company, which was constructed in the 1930’s. Open house activities include the opportunity to tour the historic property and recreational facilities. Tours are available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the day of the open house. The open house and information meeting activities are part of an ongoing effort by Missouri State Parks to ensure the public has input on facilities and services offered in state parks and historic sites. Current River State Park is located 25 miles south of Salem or 15 miles north of Eminence on Hwy 19. Individuals requiring special services or accommodations to attend the meeting can make arrangements by calling the park directly 573-858-3015. The Dent County Cattlemen will hold a regular monthly meeting Sunday, September 22nd, at 2:00pm at Cafourek Farms. Ted Cunningham, MU Extension Livestock Specialist, will be the guest speaker. He’ll talk about stockpiling fescue for winter grazing and some considerations for developing replacement heifers. Bring your lawn chairs and learn about these important topics then take a tour of the farm or just sit and visit. Snacks and refreshments will be provided. Directions to Cafourek Farms: Take Highway 19 South to Route B and make a left on B. Follow Route B east and take the first county road on the left past Doss which is Dent County Road 5150. The farm is ¾ of a mile down CR 5150 on the right. Please RSVP by calling the Dent County Extension office at 573-729-3196 by September 20th. We encourage you to bring a friend and show them the importance of supporting an organization that supports cattle farmers and the beef industry. 

A benefit for Healthy Dent County will be held tonight. The “Ultimate Girls’ Night Out, Fun, Food and Fitness” will be from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Salem Community Center at the Armory. Attendees will experience Shopping with Unique Vendors, Prize Giveaways, FREE Samples, Door Prizes, Massages, Photo Booth and many other exciting items. Participating exhibitors will bring unique products and services of interest to women.  Over 35 vendors will display and sell their products and services. Bring your girlfriends for an evening of pampering, shopping and eating. There is a $5.00 admission fee and admission is limited to all women and girls 12 years of age and older. Bring in a canned food, non-perishable food or toiletry item and get a ticket to win an “Ultimate Girls Night Out” treasure chest valued at over $250. One ticket per item, the more food you donate, the more your chances increase to win the basket. Food will be donated to a local charity. An accident occurred on Saturday, September 14th at 1:56 in the afternoon on Highway 32 in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, Paul Buck of Jadwin was driving 1996 Ford Ranger that had a utility trailer loaded with 40 bales of hay attached. Buck was eastbound on Highway 32 and when he stated that when he was approaching Askins observed sparks and smoke coming from the trailer. He then continued about half a mile, made a right turn onto Highway 19, and then made an abrupt left turn into the Crossroads Shopping Center parking lot. When he came to a final rest, the hay and trailer were on fire and fully engulfed. The Ford sustained no apparent damage, but the trailer sustained moderate damage. No injuries were reported.

The Salem Lady Tiger softball game that was scheduled for Tuesday was postponed due to wet grounds and no makeup has been announced. The Lady Tigers will play at Steelville this afternoon at 4:30. Salem is 7-7 on the year and 3-0 in the SCA.

The Salem Lady Tiger Volleyball team will host Licking tonight at the SHS gym. Salem is 0-5 on the year. JV will start off at 6:00 with the varsity contest to follow. You’ll be able to hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. The game can also be seen online at fidelitylocal6.com.

Adam Wainwright tossed 7 2/3 strong innings and handled the bat admirably to help the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies in the third installment of a four-game set from Coors Field. Wainwright (17-9) went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and yielded three runs on 10 hits while striking out eight batters. St. Louis increased its lead over Pittsburgh on top of the NL Central to two games. Yadier Molina and Matt Carpenter each smacked a pair of hits with an RBI in the triumph. The Cardinals and Rockies will play again this afternoon and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting at 1:35.

The Kansas City Royals rebounded from a disappointing setback to post a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Indians a Kauffman Stadium. Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar each had two RBI for the Royals, who squandered a 3-0 lead in Tuesday's costly 5-3 loss. The Royals are two and a half games back of the final Wild Card spot. The Royals have the day off today.

the St. Louis Blues lost to Tampa Bay last night in a shootout by the final score of 4-3 to drop to 1-1 in the preseason. The Blues will be playing this Friday and Saturday nights at Scottrade Center in more preseason action.

Funeral services for Edna Armstrong of St. Louis and formerly of Salem, age 81, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Memorial service for Doug Barrett of Cherryville will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time.

Graveside services for Carl G. Vance of Salem, age 75, will be Saturday at 10:00 at the Gladden Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Family of Carl Vance and cards are available at Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
